Oman covers a total area of approximately 309,500 km squared; about 82% of this area is covered by desert and sand. The vast part of this is an area known in Arabic as Rub al Khali meaning the Empty Quarter which also takes up substantial portions of Saudi Arabia, Yemen and the United Arab Emirates. Because of the extremely dry and hot environment it is almost impossible for any animal, plant or human to survive in such conditions. In the past there have been Bedouin tribes living in such areas but modern life and education have moved them further towards towns and settlements on the borders of the sands.Further north east of the Empty Quarter, you will find the Wahiba sands also known as the sharqiyah sands, another desert plain approximately 180 km from North to South and 80km from East to West. It is here that about 3,000 Bedu families from different tribes still there. The wahiba sands is home to many species of plants, birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians.
