This Devine Madman Trail Was Once Used By Lam Drukpa Kunley (1455-1529) More Popularly Known As The Divine Madman When He Came To Bhutan In The 16Th Century Seeking The Arrow He Had Shot From Tibet. While The Arrow Was Eventually Found On A Staircase Of A House In Chandana (One Of The Villages Along The Trail) It Was Not An Easy Journey As Lam Drukpa Kunley Had To Subdue Many Demons Along The Way. One Such Epic Encounter With The Demons Was At Dochula Area (3-000 Metres) Along Trail Till Chimmi Lhakhang (1400 Metres) Where It Was Finally Crashed And Buried. Chimi Lhakhang Stands Monument To This Episode.
Day 1 : Arrive in Bhutan
Upon arrival in Paro- your Bhutan visa will be stamped into your passport. Our guide and driver will receive you at the exit point with your name board. We will drive you straight to Thimphu and check into your hotel where we will check you into freshen up and also have lunch in the hotel. Our first stop after lunch will be the Royal Textile Museum - the institution is dedicated to preserve and promote the Bhutanese textile and unique culture and traditions of Bhutan.Next visit the Tashichhodzong- which was expanded in 1641 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel - the temporal ruler in Bhutan during the 16th century. To this day the dzong serves as the seats of the government and the home of about 500 monks during summer. The monks move to Punakha for three months during winters.
Day 2 : Sightseing in Thimphu
After breakfast visit the world’s tallest sitting Buddha statue(51m) at Kuenselpgodrang Visit the Painting School where traditional art is still kept alive through instructions in the art of painting Thangkas (sacred Buddhist religious scrolls) and visit the National Memorial Chorten built in memory of the third King of Bhutan- His Majesty King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. The deities depicted inside are the Nyingmapa tradition of Buddhism and teachings of Vajrayana (or tantric form of) Buddhism and provide a rare insight into Buddhist Philosophy.
Day 3 : Trek to Talhogang (6hrs- Alt. 2050m)
After sightseeing at Dochula- the trek start at the elevation of 2950m to Talhogang via Lumitsawa covering the distance of 8km through pristine cool broadleaf forest with old growth Rhodo trees. Lunch arranged at a farm house in Lumitsawa. Continue walk to to Talhogang (elevation 1700m) Night halt in Talhogang t in camp/farm house
Day 4 : Trek to Siluna (5hrs- Alt. 1500m)
After breakfast at camp- trek to Siluna via Thinleygang and Chandana taking through sub tropical forest and rice paddy fields. Visit local temple and heritage house in Chandana where Lam Drukpa Kinley’s (Devine mad-man) arrow landed. Here the owner of the house can provide more insights to the cultural history of Lam Drukpa Kinleys visit through paintings and artifacts. Lunch served here in the village and start trek to Siluna covering distance of 6km. Dinner and overnight camp in Siluna.
Day 5 : Trek to Chasa (1 ½ hrs- Alt. 1350m) and sightseeing in Punakha
This is a pleasant walk without any climbs or drops maintaining an elevation range 1500m -1250m covering about 4km. The major part of the trail follows the irrigation channel. The trail passes through few houses of Chasa village to provide a cultural experience. The walk can end here to connect the highway where your vehicle pick will you up to drive to your hotel in Punakha for lunch. Afternoon vist the temple dedicated to the Divine Mad Monk - Drukpa Kuenley. The hike takes about 20 minutes to the monastery through rice fields- chilies and cabbage. The next stop will be the magnificent Punakha Dzong built on the confluence of the Po and Mo (male and female) rivers. This fortress is the winter residence of the monastic order’s head. Dinner and overnight in hotel.
Day 6 : Drive to Paro
After breakfast- retrace the journey back to Paro and reach by lunch time. After lunch- visit the Ta Dzong- a 17th century monument- which now houses the National Museum with an excellent collection of Bhutanese antiques. It served as a watch tower during the Tibetan invasion and played a strategic role in Bhutan’s successful defenses. Next- visit the Rinpung Dzong. This again as with all Dzongs- is the centre for civil and religious activities. The evenings are free to look around the small quaint town of Paro.
Day 7 : Excursion to Taksang
After breakfast- drive to Satsam Chorten to start the pilgrimage to Takstang - The Tiger's Nest. This serene monastery clings to a steep granite cliff about 700 meters above the valley floor. Being one of the most revered Buddhist sites- thousands of pilgrims travel here each year from all over the World. Lunch can be served at the cafeteria on the way- from where one can get a most spectacular view of the monastery on the opposite cliff. It takes about 2 and half hours to get there and about 2 hours to return down.
Day 8 : Departure
Drive to Paro International airport for onward journey by Drukair/Bhutan Airlines in the morning. Our guide shall escort right to the airport to see you pass safely through customs and immigration formalities.
