Arrive Leh by morning flight and transfer to the hotel. After welcome drink / breakfast at the hotel, take complete rest for acclimatization to the high altitude of Ladakh. In the late afternoon visit the city centre and walk through the old markets for general orientation. Overnight at the hotel.
After breakfast, proceed on sightseeing tour of Shey Palace (with its associated Gompa housing the gigantic copper-gilt statue of the Buddha), the 12-storied Thiksey Monastery dating from the 16th century, and then the 17th century Hemis Monastery, biggest and richest monastery in Ladakh. On the way back to Leh, take a detour across the Indus to visit the Stok Palace Museum. Overnight at the hotel.
After breakfast, drive to Lamayuru (127 kms.), which is believed to be the oldest site where a monastery was founded during the 11th century AD. Presently a major Brigung-Kargyut-pa monastic foundation, Lamayuru monastery is famous for its spectacular setting with the ‘Moonland’ hills forming its backdrop. After sightseeing / lunch here, drive back towards Leh till Uleytokpo or Alchi. Overnight in fixed camp at Uletokpo or in a hotel at Alchi.
After breakfast, visit the 11th century Alchi Choskor, oldest surviving monastic complex of Ladakh and famous for its ancient wall frescoes and architecture-a UNESCO listed heritage site. Thereafter drive back to Leh, en-route visiting the 15th century Likir Monastery, followed by Sangam (confluence of Indus & Zanskar Rivers), Magnetic Point, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, Kali Mata (temple of the Guardians in Spituk monastery) & Hall of Fame (museum of military heritage). Overnight at hotel.
After breakfast leave for Tsomo-riri Lake, driving upstream the Indus via Chumathang (hot Springs), Mahe Bridge and Puga Sumdo, where the road bifurcates, with the right side road leadinging all the way to Tsomoriri through dramatic mountain scenery. Tsomoriri Lake (28 km long & about 8 km wide) is the breeding ground of many migratory birds including the rare bar-headed goose. The village & monastery of Korzok nestling along the hill slopes on the banks of the lake is the only settled population in the area, otherwise inhabited by scattered population of Changpa pastoral nomads. Overnight in fixed tent camp or Guest House.
After breakfast retrace the route till Puga Sumdo and then follow the left side road through the Puga Valley with its sulphur springs, at the end of which the road ascends the Polokongka pass (4920 mtrs). After descending from the pass, we proceed to Tso-Kar, a small salt producing lake system located in the Rupshu region. After sightseeing and lunch at the lake side, take the Manali-Leh road to return to Leh via the Taglang-la pass, 2nd highest road motorable road in the world. Reach Leh by the late afternoon / evening. Overnight at the hotel.
After breakfast leave for Nubra Valley, driving across Khardong-la (alt: 18,380 ft.), highest motorable pass in the world. The pass offers spectacular views of the Zanskar range across the Indus Valley in the south, and the Saser massif in the north. Reach Deskit/ Hunder in the afternoon and check-in at your camp / hotel. Rest of the at leisure to explore Hundar and the white Sand Dunes where you can enjoy a short camel Safari on the double-humped Bactrian camel found here (optional, on direct payment). Overnight in camp / hotel at Hunder / Deskit.
After breakfast, explore Deskit (headquarters of Nubra valley) and then visit the dramatically located, 15th century Deskit Monastery, perched high on a rock overhang above the village. Thereafter drive back to Leh via Khardongla, reaching in the afternoon. Overnight at the hotel.
After early breakfast leave for Pangong Lake via Chang-la pass (alt: 17370 ft./ 5486 meters), 3rd highest motorable pass in the world. Pangong Lake (alt: 14,500 ft.), largest brackish water lake of Asia, is 4-5 kms wide and about 135 kms long of which two-third portion lies on the other side of the Indo-China border. After sightseeing around the lake, drive back to Leh reaching in the evening. Overnight at the hotel.
Leisurely day at Leh for rest. In the afternoon visit Shanti Stupa and then the 9-storey Leh Palace built by King Singey Namgyal in 1600 AD. Thereafter drop in the city centre for exploring the markets on your own pace. Overnight at the hotel.
Rafting Option:
On this day, you can also opt for an exciting half-day Rafting trip on the Indus River between Phey and Nimu (if water level is adequate) OR on the Zanskar River between Chiling & Nimo (optional-extra payment).
Early morning transfer to the airport for taking the flight back home.
