The Phajoding Monastery (3500 meters) has recently become a very accessible site. Many locals and foreigners alike have flocked to this monastery for day trips, overnight stays, and multi-day treks.
However, Dungtsho, a few hours of the detour from the Monastery at the elevation of 3950m has been hitting its headline in Bhutan for its easy short trek accompanied by rich flora, breathtaking views and most importantly its mythological story. Most of the people residing in Thimphu have completed this trek including kids of 10 and above age. It is the best-known trek and people often visit this place to retreat and find peace.

Day 1 : Arrival to Paro - Thimphu
Depending upon the flight sector, one will get to see the views of Major Himalaya peaks such as Everest, Kanchenjunga and Makalu, and Bhutan’s own snowy peaks, the sacred Jhomolhari, Jichu Drake and Tsherimgang.
As you enter Paro valley, you will sweep past forested hills with the silvery Pa Chu (Paro river) meandering down the valley below. Paro Dzong (fortress) and Ta Dzong (watchtower) on the hills above the town will be a fine sight.
Upon completing your visa & customs formalities, a representative from our company will be there to receive you as you exit the Airport. Our team will warmly welcome you by offering scarfs and then drive you to Thimphu, the capital City of Bhutan for a lunch.
After lunch,
- Visit Buddha Dordenma Statue, this massive statue of Buddha Shakyamuni measures in at a height of 51.5 meters, making it one of the largest statues of Buddha in the world. The statue is made of bronze and is gilded in gold. The Buddha Dordenma is located atop a hill in Kuenselphodrang Nature Park and overlooks the Southern entrance to Thimphu Valley.
- Followed by a visit to Thimphu Memorial Chorten, built in the memory of our late 3rd king of Bhutan Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. It holds paintings and statues which provide a very rare insight into Buddhist Philosophy.
- And a walk around the capital. The capital in the only one without traffic light in the whole world and the walk gives you an insight to Bhutanese architectural design. Our team will then drop you to your hotel for rest and preparation for your trek. (Overnight at Thimphu)
Day 2 : Motithang to Phajodhing (thuji Dra)
The first day of the trek,
- Our team will drive you to the base of Phajodhing (Upper Motithang), the starting point of the trekking. The first day of trekking is of more than 5 km.
- You will ascend into clouds through the deep pine forest. The route will be in full bloom of rhododendron (seasonal) offering you an array of colors. You will then reach Phajodhing. The Place provides one with an excellent view of Thimphu Valley and it is also a retreat center for monks and nuns. You can visit some ancient monasteries and communicate with the monks. Our team will then serve you with your lunch to regain your strength.
After your lunch
- Make your ascent of the night to Thuji Dra. Thuji Dra is the topmost temple in the family of shelters that make up Phajoding. Followed a meditation inside the temple nearby.
- Our team will serve you with warm tea and snacks before your dinner. (Overnight at the camp)
Day 3 : Thuji Dra - Dungtsho
The second day of the trek,
If you wish to see a sunrise from over 4000m, we would recommend waking early at 4:30 am in the morning to feel the charm as the sunrise showering the landscape with a golden glow. As you bask in the sun enjoying fresh air and the smell of rhododendrons, our team will get ready with the morning meal
Our team then will serve you with breakfast once you are done getting ready for the trek.
- You will leave Thuji Dra to head into the mountains that tower over Phajodhing and the rest of the Thimphu valley. You will reach a small stupa at the top of the pass where you will take rest and enjoy the clouds racing across the sky.
The route is accompanied with few ascend and descend until you reach a marked junction just before the pass that overlooks Simkotra Tsho. You will then begin to ascend above the Druk path route. After two hours of walks through a rhododendron forest, you will finally cross a peak at the elevation of 4,300m before seeing a “Dungtsho”. To the southeast lay its sister Dungtsho Shama, literally translated as “Lower Dungtsho”. Offer prayers and incense. Our team will serve you your lunch at Simkotra on your way back.
After Lunch, Walk back to your campsite. On your way back you will enjoy the sunset with a visit to certain places which may interest you. (Overnight at the camp)
Day 4 : Thuji Dra - Thimphu
After your morning meal,
- You will then descend back to the base from where the trek started. Since it is downward, it is easy compared to other days and you will be reaching the destination earlier.
- Our team will be waiting for you at the base and take you to see the national animal of Bhutan takin followed by a drive to your hotel where you will refresh yourself and have your lunch.
After lunch,
- Visit Centennial Farmer's market, the biggest farmers market in Bhutan and stroll around it. The farmers from all the districts in the country come to this place to sell their Agriculture product.
- Followed by a visit to Folk Heritage Museum, a living museum of rural life which provides visitors and tourists with fascinating insights into the Bhutanese material culture and way of life and Dechen Phodrang, The initial place of Trashichoe dzong.
In the evening,
- Visit Trashichoe Dzong a fortress of the glorious religion. (Fortress of the Glorious Religion), built in 1641 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel and reconstructed in 1961 by the Late King, His Majesty King Jigme Dorji Wang chuck. It houses His Majesty's secretariat building, the throne room and the office of the king, the central monk body, and some ministries. Visit the chapel until the unique flag lowering ceremonies at the Dzong. (Overnight at Thimphu)
Day 5 : Drive to Chelela Pass
After your breakfast,
- Drive to Chelela pass, the highest motorable pass in Bhutan for you to have a spectacular view of the majestic Mt. Jomolhari (24,035 feet), Jichu Drakey (22,930 feet) and the Haa valley. You will spend a few times there to enjoy the spectacular view of the surroundings. From the point, you will get to see both Paro district and Haa district at the same time. Followed by a drive to Paro for a Lunch.
After Lunch,
- Visit key cultural sites such as the Paro Rinpung Dzong (Built-in 1644 is known as the fortress of the heap of jewels), is the administrative seat of the district of Paro. Followed by a visit to Paro National Museum (Ta-Dzong) initially the watch is serving as the National Museum of the country. It holds a fascinating collection of art, relics, religious Thangkha paintings and Bhutan's exquisite postage stamps.
- And a walk around the town for you get a glimpse of traditional town and do some shopping in case you wanted to take back home some gifts and souvenirs. Our team will then take you to your hotel to rest for the next day hike(Overnight at Paro)
Day 6 : Thimphu - Paro Taktshang (tiger Nest)
After breakfast,
- Our team will drive you to the base of Paro Taktshang (Tiger Nest) from where you will Hike to Paro Taktshang through the beautiful pine forest at the edge of a sheer rock cliff. Taktshang Monastery is Bhutan’s most iconic landmark and religious site. The name Taktshang translates to “The Tiger’s Nest”. This monastery is one of the holiest sites in the kingdom and clings impossibly to a sheer cliff face 3100 m above the Paro Valley. No trip to Bhutan would be complete without a visit to this remarkable heritage site. Our team will then escort you for a lunch.
After lunch,
- Visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan‘s oldest and most sacred monasteries dating from the introduction of Buddhism in the 8th century and a walk across the village in Paro to see the Authentic life in the rural farmer in Bhutan
- Followed by a hot stone bath to relieve your body pain from trek and dinner at one of the popular place known as Ecolodge. (Overnight at Paro)
Day 7 : Departure
Our team will drop you to Paro airport for your onward destination depending upon your flight schedule.
