You will be met at Nairobi Airport and transferred to your hotel in this bustling city.
Check in and relax in your warm and friendly African surroundings.
Day 2 : Nairobi
Today is at leisure in Nairobi, before joining your small group tour.
Many optional excursions are available - including a visit to the Sheldrick Elephant Orphange, the Giraffe Centre and Karen Blixen Museum. It is also possible to visit Nairobi National Park.
Note: You should take only soft bags with you on safari, as vehicle luggage space is limited.
Day 3 : Masai Mara National Park
We leave Nairobi early this morning (07.00) and drive 4-hours across the scenic Great Rift Valley, travelling in a safari jeep (with pop-up roof for game viewing and guaranteed window seat).
We pass through Kenya's fertile highlands and head down the rift escarpment on a road built by Italian prisoners during World War II. Look for the charming chapel they built at the foot of the escarpment. We pass the impressive Longonot earth satellite station and head across the valley to Narok, before reaching the Masai Mara in time for lunch.
Masai Mara National Park is named after the Masai people and the Mara River, which divides the park. This park is famous for its exceptional population of game and the annual migration of zebra and wildebeest from the adjoining Serengeti National Park. This phenomenon occurs every year from July to October, when game migrates along a circular route from the plains of the Serengeti to the Masai Mara and back again in search of fresh pastures, followed by hungry predators - most notably lions and hyena.
Check into your lodge in this magnificent wildlife sanctuary and enjoy an afternoon game drive.
On escorted group tours please note that for operational reasons it is sometimes necessary to substitute one hotel with another of similar quality. Luggage needs to be packed in soft side bags (sports bags are ideal) not exceeding 15 kg and 65 x 46 cm. Due to limited space in the vehicle, rigid suitcases are not suitable. Excess baggage can be left in Nairobi and collected after your safari.
Day 4 : Masai Mara National Park
Today is dedicated to game viewing on the open plains of the world famous Masai Mara National Park.
Nestled within the enormous Great Rift Valley, the Masai Mara is famous for its many prides of lions, packs of hyena and other predators - as well as huge herds of wildebeest, which number over one million, zebra and giraffe. All the Big Five can be seen here, as well as numerous other species including the Thomson's gazelle, topi, kongoni, impala, roan antelope and hippo. The nocturnal bat-eared fox, rarely found elsewhere in Kenya, also inhabits this park as well as the endangered cheetah and black rhino. Bird watching is also excellent with over 450 different species including the vulture, marabou stork, secretary bird, hornbill, crowned crane, ostrich, long-crested eagle and African pygmy-falcon.
Set off early each morning, when game viewing conditions are at their best, to view the abundant wildlife of this region. Return to the lodge to rest in the heat of the day, before setting off again in the late afternoon for another game drive. We also visit a local Masai Village to see their way of life.
Day 5 : Lake Nakuru
A full day on the road today as we travel 6.5-hours from the Masai Mara to the Lake Nakuru region in the heart of the Great Rift Valley.
We drive across the "breadbasket" of Kenya, where acres of wheat and barley cover the landscape towards Narok, the district headquarters of this part of Maasailand. As we traverse the vast plains on the floor of the Rift Valley, keep an eye out for herds of giraffe and gazelle, before we head up towards Maai Mahiu and on to Lake Nakuru.
Following lunch and a siesta, enjoy an afternoon game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park, returning to the lodge as the sun sets. A soda lake on the floor of the Rift Valley, at certain times of the year Lake Nakuru is home to many flamingos and over 400 different bird species. The lake is also a haven for certain endangered species including the Rothschild giraffe and black and white rhino.
Day 6 : Amboseli National Park
After an early breakfast, we leave Lake Nakuru and drive 6-hours to Amboseli National Park.
Before leaving the Rift Valley, we stop at Lake Naivasha for a boat ride. We continue to Nairobi for an early lunch (or picnic lunch dependent on road conditions) before heading southwards towards Amboseli, arriving in the late afternoon.
Situated in southern Kenya on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, this national park offers magnificent views of the peak in neighbouring Tanzania. In the early morning it is a wonderful experience to see the peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro hovering above the clouds, and photographing wildlife against this dramatic backdrop is particularly rewarding.
Day 7 : Amboseli National Park
Rise early today for a full day of game viewing in Amboseli National Park that is particularly renowned for its large herds of elephants.
The local people are mainly Maasai and this sanctuary offers a fantastic array of wildlife. With a dramatic contrast between its dry lake beds and watery swamps, you should see buffalo, black and white rhino, zebra, wildebeest and much more - as this low rainfall area is one of the best game viewing regions in the whole of Kenya.
Day 8 : Tanzania
This morning we cross the border into Tanzania and travel 3-hours to the regional capital of Arusha, where we stop for an included lunch.
Afterwards we drive 3-hours to beautiful Lake Manyara, passing through the picturesque villages of the Masai Steppe. At the town of Makuyuni we turn northwest and continue our journey up a scenic escarpment to our lodge perched on the edge of the Rift Valley, with stunning views over distant Lake Manyara.
Lake Manyara National Park has a large concentration of monkeys, as well as plains game such as giraffe, elephant, impala, dik dik and the rare tree-climbing lion. Large pods of hippo congregate where rivers run into the lake. Check in to your lodge and relax in your wonderful surroundings.
Day 9 : Lake Manyara National Park
This morning enjoy a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park before driving 5-hours through game viewing country to the great Serengeti.
Serengeti National Park (meaning 'Endless Plains) is a World Heritage site that hosts the largest overland wildlife migration in the world. Each October over 2 million wildebeest and accompanying wildlife travel over 500 miles, as they journey from the open plains of the Masai Mara and across the hills of the Serengeti to the southern plains. After calving in February, from April onwards the great migration starts once again as these millions of animals move northwards, crossing the treacherous Grumeti River in the western corridor in search of the sweet new grasses of the Mara.
Day 10 : Serengeti National Park
Today is devoted to early morning and late afternoon game viewing in the great Serengeti National Park.
This vast conservation area, which is larger than Northern Ireland, lies between Lake Victoria in the west, Lake Eyasi in the south and the Great Rift Valley in the east. The landscape varies from open grass plains in the south, savanna with scattered acacia trees in the centre, hilly wooded grasslands in the north and woodlands and clay pans in the west - with small rivers, lakes ands swamps scattered throughout.
With more than 70 large mammals and over 500 other animal species, including large prides of lions and great herds of wildebeest, zebras and gazelle, outstanding game viewing is guaranteed on a scale only seen in East Africa. Bird watching is also outstanding.
Day 11 : Ngorongoro Crater
This morning we leave Serengeti National Park and enjoy more game viewing as we drive 3-hours to our lodge set high on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, stopping en route for an included picnic lunch.
Stretching across 8,300 sq km, the high altitude Ngorongoro Conservation Area boasts a dramatic variety of volcanic landscapes, wildlife, people and archaeology. Its grasslands, waterfalls and mountain forests are home to an abundance of animals and also to the Masai people, and has been declared a World Heritage site.
Day 12 : Ngorongoro Crater
Today enjoy a tour into the basin of the Ngorongoro Crater, including game viewing and a picnic lunch on the crater floor.
The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact caldera, forming a spectacular bowl of about 265 square kilometres with sides up to 2,000 feet (600m) deep. Although animals are free to move in and out of this contained environment, the rich volcanic soil, lush forests and spring lakes on the crater floor attract both grazers and predators all year round, with up to 30,000 animals living in the crater - including endangered rhino, lion, hyena and jackal on the open savanna and elephants and monkeys in the forests. You may also see flamingos on the lake.
Day 13 : Tarangire
This morning we travel 3.5-hours from Ngorongoro to Tarangire.
One of the least visited of Tanzania's northern game reserves, Tarangira National Park is famous for its giant baobabs, huge herds of elephants and tree climbing lions. Enjoy wonderful game viewing in this wildlife sanctuary this afternoon and enjoy the spectacle of an African sunset.
Day 14 : Departure
Today we leave Tarangire and travel 2.5-hours to Arusha.
We then cross the border into Kenya and drive 4-hours to Nairobi Airport for your flight home.
