No better way to arrive in Zermatt
The Europaweg route from Grächen to Zermatt may be the most beautiful 2-day hike in the Alps, and it’s certainly the most beautiful way to make a grand entrance into Zermatt at the conclusions of the Chamonix-Zermatt Haute Route. The views on the trail are dominated by the Weisshorn (4506 meters) and then the Matterhorn (4478 meters). The route parallels the Mattertal, the longest of the valley’s radiating from the Rhone. The trail extends from Grächen via Gasenreid to Grat. From there it continues south on a high-level track above the Mattertal to the Europahütte for the evening. Along the way you’ll have commanding views the Weisshorn to the west and the villages of St Niklaus and Randa in the valley below.

World’s Longest Footbridge
Shortly after departing the Europahütte, you descend toward the Grabengufer Gorge—once a dangerous obstacle on the route, but it’s recently become one of the great adventure hiking highlights of the trip as you cross the newly-built Europabrücke Suspension Bridge, the longest pedestrian-only suspension bridge in the world. The path then continues on to Täschalp where soon the Matterhorn appears in all its glory. You can descend into Zermatt on foot or take the funicular in a straight shot from Sunnegga to the valley station, and then just a few minutes’ walk to your hotel.
