The Everest Base Camp trek begins with one of the world’s most adventurous flight, the Kathmandu- Lukla flight. It can’t get better than this. We begin the trek from Lukla, travelling through the breathtaking views of Sagarmatha National Park to Namche Bazar; the home of the Sherpas. Namche Bazar is situated in a crescent shaped mountain slopes, presenting spectacular views of the mountains across the valley. Aiding the acclimatization that is offset by the change in the altitude; we take a day’s rest in Namche Bazar mingling with the Sherpas learning about their culture, visiting their monasteries and the wild life museums. Passing the lush alpine forest with its enchanting wildlife along the glacial rivers and waterfalls we get closest to the mighty Himalayas and Everest.
SHERPA
Originally of Tibetan origin, Sherpa is the ethnic group found in the Helambu, Langtang and Solukhumbu region of Nepal. Sherpa language, culture and tradition are heavily influence by Tibetan scriptures. Sherpas follow Nyingmapa sect of Buddhism, founded by Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche). The Sherpa community uses clan system for rituals of matrimony. Sherpa hospitality tradition is ancient and important. They believe that guest might be Padmasambhava in disguise. Besides farming herding and training majority of Sherpas work for the tourism industry. They are the most efficient mountaineers in the world.
Day 1 : Arrive in Kathmandu (1,300 m/4,264 ft.)

Upon your arrival in Kathmandu through Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), a representative from Arihant Holidays will receive you and escort you to the Hotel. After check-in you’ll be visited by your trekking guide to carry out final preparation for the trip. We will organize a “Welcome Dinner” later in the evening in a traditional Nepalese Restaurant featuring a Nepalese cultural program along with a fine meal.
Day 2 : Kathmandu: Sightseeing and Trek Preparation

After a delicious breakfast spend the day visiting some of the popular sights of Kathmandu.
Swaymbhunath is a popular ancient Buddhist pilgrimage site, also known as the Monkey temple. Its structure is a white dome with a gold conical shape on top, which is painted with the watchful eyes of Buddha. A mythological story about origin of Swayambhu states that a lotus that radiated dazzling light sprung at the very spot where the dome is today. The lotus is said to have been planted by Buddha. After climbing 365 stairs that lead to the temple you can explore many legends and mythological stories about its existence.
Pashupatinath Temple is the popular pilgrimage site of the Hindus. The main temple is that of Lord Shiva. Though the temple is barred to non-Hindus a good view of the famous pagoda style structure of the temple complex, courtyard and the other shrines can be viewed from the opposite bank of the Bagmati River. Shiva’s manifestation as Pashupati lord of animal, is considered one of the holiest sites of the Hindus and is a must visit once in a lifetime to gain salvation. You can also see the Hindus cremation site Aryaghat at the bank of Bagmati River.
As you go for sightseeing, don’t get carried away as you may have to purchase the gears that you might require for the trekking. The stores equipped with trekking gears can be spotted easily at Thamel, couple of minute walk from Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square. You will spend this night in Kathmandu, however finish packing and be well rested for the next day.
Bouddhanath is the largest and the most important holy place for the Buddhists. It is also famous for its power to fulfill wishes and blessings. The base of the stupa is a square shaped terraced plinth representing joy, love, compassion and calmness. The white dome shaped structure on top is painted with yellow to represent lotus. Above which a square tower representing fire is painted with eyes of Buddha. On top of it is the gold conical shaped structure representing air and followed by an umbrella on topmost part symbolizing space.
Kathmandu (Hanuman Dhoka) Durbar Square is a public square containing ancient palaces, temples, statues and streets. There is an ancient wood pavilion Kasthmandap made by wood gathered from a divine tree, Kalpa Vriksha, build centuries ago. It is this pavilion from which the city got its name Kathmandu. Taleju temple is the oldest and the tallest building in the area, door of which is opened only once in a year during the festival of Dashain. The buildings in the durbar square are important link to the history of Nepal. Hanuman Dhoka is the name given after idol of Hindu monkey god Hanuman which is placed near the entrance of the ancient palace. At Kathmandu you will get to marvel the traditional art and crafts of the Newars, in the form of intricate wood work, sculptors and architecture.
Day 3 : Kathmandu - Lukla - Phakding (2,652 m/8,700 ft.): 3-4 hours trek

After breakfast you will get transferred to the domestic airport in TIA where you depart for Luka. When we land in Tenzing-Hillary Airport at Lukla, a hillside surrounded by high mountain peak, you will meet up with the rest of the trek team to start the journey. We begin the trek through the prosperous village of Lukla, along the steep terrain, catching the first glimpse of Dudh Koshi River, across a metal suspension bridge until we reach Phakding. Also, you will get a taste of the rich culture and religious belief in the region as you discover mani walls, chortens, boulders carved with Tibetan mantra and bright painted prayer wheels. Overnight stay at Phakding.
Day 4 : Phakding - Namche Bazaar (3,440 m/11,280 ft.): 5-6 hrs.

As we depart from Phakding we will take a trail north alongside the Dudh Koshi River and through the sweet-smelling pine forest above the west bank of the river. A steep climb follows however you will be rewarded by the first glimpse of Thamserku (6,608m) which rises to the east of Namche Bazaar. We must cross Dudh Koshi River over a suspension bridge, trek past the entrance to Sagarmatha National Park, trail through villages entwined with forest of rhododendron, magnolia and fir and follow a zigzagging ascent through the Pine forest to reach our destination: Namche Bazaar, the capital of Sherpas. Overnight stay at Namche Bazaar.
Day 5 : Namche Bazaar: Rest day

Namche Bazaar is one of the most attractive settlement and the main trading center in the Khumbu Region. Historically, it was an important staging point for trading expedition across the Nangpa La into Tibet. Because of the steep climb from Phakding, it is essential to stay at least one extra night to adjust to the altitude. Health experts recommend trekkers to stay active during the acclimatization period instead of being idle. Thus, spend the entire day either exploring Namche Bazaar or visiting the neighboring village of Khunde or Thame.
Namche Bazaar is populated with government offices, ATMs, museums, internet cafes, shops, restaurants and bakery café for your recreational and travel needs. Visit museums to see an assortment of things related to the first Everest ascenders; learn about the Sherpa culture and also the various plant and animal life found in the region.
Overnight stay at Namche Bazaar.
Day 6 : Namche Bazzar to Tengboche (3,870 m/12,694 ft.): 5 - 6 hrs.

Today we will pick up the path walking in the presence of mighty peaks Thamserku (6,623 m) to Ama Dablam (6,812 m). Following the trail through a forest of tall mature rhododendrons you can find various species of wildlife like musk deer and Himalayan Thar in their natural habitat. The entrance of Tengboche is marked with a Kani and a pair of chortens. The village is located below a crescent shaped ridge covered by shrub pine and rhododendrons. The hub of Tengboche is the famous Tengboche Gompa, where the festival of Mani Rimdu is celebrated yearly featuring colorful masked dancers. You can also marvel the magnificent view of the Himalayas. Overnight stay at Tengboche.
Day 7 : Tengboche to Dingboche (4,360 m /14,300 ft.): 5- 6 hrs.

Leaving Tengboche through a forest of dwarf conifers and rhododendrons keep a look out for wildlife like the monal pheasants and musk deer. Follow the path which drops steeply to the suspension bridge over the Imja Khola and the climbs over the hillside. We descend and trek along the Imja Khola across a small bridge to ascend up to the scattered houses of Dingboche. Overnight stay at Dingboche.
Day 8 : Dingboche (4,360 m /14,300 ft.) Rest Day

We spend an additional day at Dingboche to aid in the acclimatization process. Spend the day exploring the village and observe their unique ways of farming barley, buckwheat and potatoes enclosed by stonewalls to protect it from cold winds and grazing animals. Enjoy the snowcapped summits of Island Peaks (Imja Tse; 6,189m), Peak 38 (7,591m) and Lhotse (8,501m). Visit the highest internet café in the Khumbu Region. Situated north of Dengbuche is the Nangkartshang Gompa where you can witness the fifth highest mountain in the word Mt. Makalu (8,463m). Overnight stay at Dingboche.
Day 9 : Dingboche - Duglha (4,600 m/15,090 ft.): 3-4 hrs.

We depart from Dingboche and trek onwards enjoying the beautiful view of the twin peaks of Taboche (6,495 m) and Cholatse (6,440 m). We reach Deglha after descending down to the glacial stream and climbing up the other side. Overnight Stay at Duglha.
Day 10 : Duglha - Lobuche (4940 m/16,207 ft.): 2-4 hrs.

We pick up the trail through the moraine of the Khumbu Glacier and pick our way through boulder littered slopes as we climb the eerie ridge top to be treated with gorgeous mountainous view. The path is covered with memorials to lost climbers and Sherpas. We hike across the ridge and the shallow gravel gully until we make a strenuous ascent over loose moraine and reach Lobuche. Overnight stay at Lobuche.
Day 11 : Lobuche - Gorak Shep (5,170 m/16,961ft) - Everest Base Camp (5,364 m/17,594 ft.) - Gorak Shep: 8-9 hrs.

We follow the trail through a narrow gap between the glacial moraine and the mountain wall, past the pyramid sign post. We climb and follow the trail until we are surrounded by snowcapped mountains looming all around us. We have finally reached Gorak Shep. You can continue the trek to Kala Patthar today itself as the view from Kala Patthar at sunset is more admirable than the sunrise. The spectacular panorama resulting as the setting sun's rays strikes the snowcapped mountains simply cannot be described in words. For those trekkers who wish to continue to Kala Patthar, our guides will escort you to view the sunset today rather than waiting until the next day. Overnight stay in Gorak Shep at a local lodge.
Day 12 : Gorak Shep - Kala Patthar (5545 m /18,192 ft.)- Pheriche (4280 m /14,070 ft.): 8-9 hrs.

We start the day by catching the impressive sight of the first morning light shining on Mount Everest from Kala Patthar. Climb the peak of Kala Patthar which is marked by cairns and prayer flags and absorb the awe inspiring view of the Himalayan panorama. After the trip to Kala Pathar retrace your steps along the moraine of the Khumbu glacier. We continue descending until we reach a bridge over the stream flowing out of the glacier. From here we follow the low path along the valley of the Khumbu Khola up to Pheriche. Overnight stay at Pheriche.
Day 13 : Pheriche to Kyangjuma (3,570 m/11,710ft.): 5-6 hrs

Pheriche is a labyrinth of stone walls; we pass through a ridge topped by stupas and memorials of lost climbers. Retrace the trek through a forest of matured rhododendrons, water powered prayer flags and traverse across the bridge until you reach Kyangjuma. Kyangjuma features an inspiring view of Ama Dablam. Overnight stay at Kyangjuma.
Day 14 : Kyangjuma to Monjo [2,840 m/9,315 ft.]: 4-5 hrs.

Monjo is a small village located below the Sagarmatha National Park. We travel through Namche Bazar and across suspension bridges over Dudh Koshi River to reach Monjo. Located near the Dudh Koshi the village has a small Gompa set in a rocky outcrop overlooking the vegetable fields. Overnight stay at Monjo.
Day 15 : Monjo to Lukla: 4-5 hrs.

From Monjo we depart to Lukla, signaling the final leg of our trek. Overnight stay at Lukla.
Day 16 : Lukla – Kathmandu
Included meals: Breakfast, Dinner
We spend some time buying souvenirs and capturing some memory of the mountains. We catch a flight to Kathmandu from Lukla. After landing in Kathmandu you are transferred to the hotel. You can also go for some sightseeing in Kathmandu, shopping for souvenirs or relax in the hotel after the strenuous trek. We will organize a farewell dinner in your honor to celebrate the successful completion of your Trek to Everest Base Camp in the evening.
Day 17 : Transfer to Airport

It’s now time to say fare-well to towering mountainous as the time for departure is arriving soon. You can squeeze in some last minute sightseeing and shopping. A representative from Arihant Holidays will escort you to the airport approximately 3 hours before your scheduled flight.
FYI: The Kathmandu-Lukla-Kathmandu flight often gets delayed by a few hours or may even be canceled for a day or two due to unfavorable weather conditions. Thus be prepared for long waits! However, be assured that we will do our level best to avoid such delays, and fix you on next flight. Still, we suggest you to be prepared for possible delays/cancellation, and if possible always have some spare days (1-2 days) in your schedule to accommodate such delays.
