The monastery is the house of more than 700 monks.  The monastery was founded by Merag Lama Lodre Gyamtso, in 1681 in accordance to the wishes of the 5th Dalai Lama, Nagwang Lobsang Gyatso.  As per the legend, the site of the Monastery was chosen by the horse of Merag Lama. Merag Lama, who had been unable to decide a site to establish the monastery. One day he was praying in cave, seeking a divine guidance. When he came out after the prayers, he found his horse was missing. On search, the horse was located standing quietly on a hilltop. Considering that as the sign of divine blessing he decided to construct the monastery at the very spot. The monastery is also called Galden Namgey Lhatse meaning celestial paradise. There is a magnificent 8 meter high statue of Lord Buddha. The ancient library inside the courtyard has an excellent collection of  thangkas, painted with the blood from the nose of 5th Dalai Lamaand valuable Buddhist manuscripts mainly Kanjur and Tanjur numbering 850 bundles.

Sangestser Lake:  This Lake was formed during the earthquake of 1950. The lake nestles between huge mountains and is clear and beautiful with what looked like a hundred bamboo poles standing straight up in the water all over the lake. These were actually ramrod straight trees without any branches or leaves on them growing in the lake-water. The entire scene is breath-taking beautiful. The air is cold and biting and even in our warm clothes we felt cold. On the way there were many big and small clear mountain lakes which were also very beautiful. The lake has bare trees standing like guards in vigil. Popularly known as Madhuri Lake after her shooting a film in Arunachal Pradesh is located 35 kms away from Tawang near the China Border. The drive to Sangestser Lake is full of thrill and one can still see the war bankers that had been used during the Chinese aggression in 1962. The Lake is one of the remotest high-altitude lakes in the country and is deeply revered by Buddhists.

Pangateng Tso Lake (P.T. Tso Lake): There are number of beautiful lakes around Tawang. Among them Pangateng Tso, a natural lake that forms when the snow melts in summer, located 17 km away from Tawang is the most beautiful. It looks like a blue lapis ‘lazuli’ on a clear day and it’s surrounded by flowers of all colours in the month of October and blooms with snow in the winter.
The beautiful natural sites surrounding the lake provide tourist a lucky chance for deep communion with nature.

Bumla Pass: The Bum La Pass is located about 37 km away from Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh, at the Indo-China border above 16,500 ft above sea level. The road to Bum La is also a historical route, the People's Liberation Army of China invaded India during the 1962 Sino-Indian War. Here in Bum La Pass one of the fiercest battles took place in the 1962 Sino-Indian War. In 2006, Bumla pass was re-opened to traders for the first time in 44 years. Traders from both sides of the pass were permitted to enter each other’s territories, in addition to postal workers from each country. It is often covered with heavy snow throughout the year. It is one of the most off-beat passes in the world and is also referred to as the pass from where Dalai Lama entered India escaping from Tibet. This is a really beautiful place. This location is off the beaten track for those who love roaming in the wilderness. It is a fantastic place for a picnic of a lifetime if you move out of Tawang by around 7am and carry in everything yourself. Visit by civilian tourist of India is permissible with permission from the Indian Army. The track is very treacherous, only Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) advisable, and that too only on clear weather day with no snowfall or rainfall.
