Departure from UK. Pick up the rental car at the airport. Depending on your arrival time, you may want to visit the Blue Lagoon on your way from the airport, just 15 minutes driving distance. Drive to Reykjavik and check in at your hotel in the city. Explore Reykjavík at leisure.
Explore the saga valley Borgarfjörður with its waterfalls, hot springs and historic sites. You will the option to see the Hraunfossar and Barnafossar waterfalls as well as Europe's most powerful hot spring, Deildartunguhver.
On your way up north, stop at the historical site Glaumbær turf farm. Upon arrival at Akureyri, explore the town which is called the capital of North Iceland. Goðafoss, the waterfall of the gods is not far away.
Drive on Tjörnes peninsula and visit Europe’s most powerful waterfall, Dettifoss. It is 44 m high and at least 200-700 tons of water discharges per second. Take your time to discover the sights at lake Mývatn and the nearby hot spring areas. Whilst proceeding to the east, you shouls pass a vast wasteland.
Drive along the scenic fjords of east Iceland and enjoy the small town of Höfn with its glacier exhibition. Explore the Vatnajökull glacier, Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon and Skaftafell National Park.
Drive along the south coast and witness many natural wonders such as black lava beaches, waterfalls and glaciers. The folk museum at Skógar is well worth a visit, it is close to the impressive Skogarfoss waterfall.
Your first stop should be at Þingvellir national park, a UNESCO world heritage site. The park rests in a valley created by the power of the apart drifting tectonic plates. Keep on driving to Haukadalur hot spring area where you will see several hot springs, the most active being the geysir Strokkur, which erupts every 10 minutes. The next stop is the Gullfoss waterfall (golden waterfall). This waterfall falls in two cascades into a narrow and deep gorge. Further on at your trip will you visit the church and historical site of Skálholt before heading on to the volcanic crater Kerið.
Depending on your flight time you might want to spend the morning exploring Reykjavík or taking a dip in the Blue Lagoon on your way to the airport.
Drive back to Keflavik airport and return the car.
