Check into your hotel in this capital city and relax under warm blue Namibian skies.
Day 2 : Namibia
This morning you will be collected from your Windhoek hotel around 08.00 for your exciting small group tour of Namibia.
We travel 1-hour through the wide open spaces of central Namibia towards the Otjihavera Mountains on the outskirts of Okahandja, where Kavango woodcarvers practise their trade at a large open air craft market on the outskirts of the town.
Here there is the option of an afternoon game drive (pay locally). The farm offers rich birdlife and there are 11 different animal species to be seen - including eland, kudu, oryx, springbok and giraffe. You can spot animals and take photos while your guide describes the fauna, flora and birdlife found on the farm. Sundowner drinks and snacks will be served while we watch the spectacular sunset. Alternatively back at the farmhouse relax on the terrace and watch animals visiting the nearby spotlit waterhole.
Tours are dual language with a bilingual guide, but as Namibia was a former German colony there are normally more German-speakers than English-speakers on tour. On escorted group tours please note that for operational reasons it is sometimes necessary to substitute one hotel with another of similar quality. Porterage of one suitcase is included.
Day 3 : Etosha National Park
This morning we leave Okahandja and travel northwards for 4-hours through the vast open plains of central Namibia to Etosha National Park, one of the largest and greatest game parks in Africa.
Etosha owes its unique landscape to a vast shallow depression called the Etosha Pan. During the dry season it becomes an expanse of white cracked mud, shimmering with mirages and spiralling dust devils, with its open pans offering magnificent game viewing. Etosha is home to over 100 different species of mammals including cheetah, leopard, lion, elephant, rhino, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest.
We check into our lodge situated near the southern gate. In the afternoon there is the option of a game drive in an open top vehicle with a lodge ranger (pay locally).
Day 4 : Etosha National Park
Today is devoted to the abundant wildlife of the famous Etosha National Park, one of the largest wildlife conservation in Africa surrounding an enormous salt pan that is the size of the Netherlands.
During drier seasons it becomes an expanse of white cracked mud, shimmering with mirages and spiralling dust devils. Waterholes along the southern edge frequently offer a rewarding game viewing experience, including several rare species such as black and white rhino.
This park is home to four of the Big 5, elephant, lion, leopard and rhino (as the terrain does not support buffalo) and its waterholes support a rich diversity of other mammals and birds, including species such as the black-faced impala, roan, cheetah and Namibia’s smallest antelope, the Damara dik-dik.
We enter the reserve at the southern gate and travel across Etosha National Park all day, exiting in the late afternoon at the eastern gate where we check into our lodge.
Day 5 : Etosha
Enjoy another game drive in Etosha National Park, as we explore the eastern sector of this great wildlife reserve.
Etosha is home to over 100 different species of mammals and over 350 different birds, so superb game viewing and birding is assured. Your guide will explain some of the complexities of managing such an enormous reserve, as you view wildife in its natural surroundings.
In the afternoon we travel to our lodge, with evening at leisure.
Day 6 : Owamboland
Today we explore the northern parts of Etosha National Park and leave through the King Nehale Gate.
We continue driving into Owamboland, home to eight Oshiwambo groups which make up the largest tribe in Namibia. Here we visit a traditional Owambo Homestead ("kraal") and learn about local life, culture and customs.
In the afternoon we arrive at our lodge, with balance of day at leisure.
Day 7 : Owamboland
This morning we travel across Owamboland with its small villages, expanding pans and majestic palm trees into untouched Kaokoland where cattle, goats and donkeys roam free.
We arrive at our lodge in Opuwo and in the afternoon visit a traditional Himba Village to experience the way of life of one of the last truly nomadic communities. Learn about their ancestral customs through an interpreter and their ancient nomadic way of life.
Day 8 : Damaraland
This morning we travel south into Damaraland, a sparsely populated part of Namibia that is home to the rare desert elephant and free roaming black rhino.
Along the way we stop to visit the World Heritage site at Twyfelfontein, which means "Doubtful Spring". Over 6,000 years ago, San communities engraved and painted over 2,500 pictures here. These ancient Bushman Paintings have been well preserved in this dry environment and the hills are strewn with rock art - making this an open-air museum.
We also visit a traditional Damara Village - a "living museum" - to learn about their beliefs, traditions & customs and how they lived in the past, before driving through awe inspiring landscapes of eroded river beds and rocky plains to our lodge.
In the afternoon there is the option of joining a 4x4 game drive along the dry river bed in search of rare Desert Elephants or a guided nature walk (pay locally). In the evening enjoy the incredible night skies.
Day 9 : Erongo Mountains
Today we leave Damaraland and travel 4-hours to the picturesque Erongo Mountains.
We travel past the Brandberg, Namibia’s highest mountain and home to the famous “White Lady” rock painting. This a site of great spiritual significance to the San Bushmen tribes and along the way we visit a local living museum of the San Bushmen people. Hear we learn about their traditions, lifestyle ancient language and how they survive in these harsh desert conditions.
Afterwards we continue to Omaruru, with afternoon is at leisure to explore the arts & crafts shops, cafes and photographic galleries of this quirky town. You can visit the Crystal Kellerei, one of only two wine farms in this desert country, that serves a delicious lunch of local produce and cheese. You can also enjoy a magical sunset from the Franke Turm, a stone tower built by the colonial German forces.
Day 10 : Swakopmund
Today we drive 3-hours to the beach resort of Swakopmund, with its old lighthouse.
Swakopmund is situated on the Atlantic Coast where the cold Benguela Current sweeps up from Antarctica, releasing no moisture into the prevailingly onshore winds – hence the very low rainfall and desert conditions. Fog is common along the coast in the early mornings and late afternoons and this is what gives life to the desert-adapted flora and fauna of the region. The cold current is also highly oxygenated, causing it to teem with marine life.
Check into your hotel and relax on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, where many optional activities are on offer.
Day 11 : Day At Leisure
At leisure to relax at the beach resort of Swakopmund.
As this is Namibia’s playground, a wide variety of optional activities are on offer - including a Marine Cruise to view dolphins, seals and other sea life. Alternatively you can participate in adventure activities such as sandboarding or take an exciting 4x4 jeep excursion across the desert to Sandwich Harbour.
Day 12 : Swakopmund
This morning is at leisure in Swakopmund, with the option of joining a Marine Cruise from Walvis Bay, where you can sip sparkling wine while watching out for dolphins, seals, flamingos and other marine life.
In the early afternoon we travel 6-hours southwards, via the Kuiseb and Ghaub Canyons. Experience ever-changing landscapes, as the terrain becomes more arid as we enter the Namib Desert.
This is the gateway to Sesriem Canyon and Sossusvlei, where some of the highest sand dunes on earth stand towering over the white desert plains. These great mountains of sand are a monument to the extreme forces of nature, with fog supplying the life giving moisture for the survival of plants and animals.
Day 13 : Sossusvlei
Set out early this morning on a 4x4 tour into the famous sand dunes at Sossusvlei, as this is the coolest part of the day and the best for photography.
This clay pan is surrounded by some of the highest dunes in the world – an endless sea of reddish sand stretching all the way to the distant horizon. These monumental star shaped dunes, some as high as 1,000 ft (325 m), were formed by strong multi-directional winds. The warm tints of sand range in colour from apricot to orange, red and maroon - and contrast vividly with the stark white clay pans at their base. You will be astonished by surreal Deadvlei, surrounded by some of the highest dunes and Sossusvlei, where the mostly dry Tsauchab River abruptly ends.
Take the opportunity to climb one of these dunes, which afford endless vistas across the desert landscape and the sea of sand. Also visit the narrow gorge of the impressive Sesriem Canyon, with its rock pools fed by the Tsauchab River during the rainy season. The name is derived from the six “rieme” (leather thongs) that early pioneers used to draw water from these pools. Afterwards return to your lodge, with afternoon at leisure.
Day 14 : Namib Desert
Today we travel 5-hours through spectacularly beautiful Namib Desert scenery to Windhoek.
You can visit the craft markets in the main street of the capital city, before your 1-hour transfer to your lodge situated in the direction of the airport.
