Renowned for their outstanding botanical diversity, the forests of Bhutan even now cover more than 70% of the terrain. This remarkable density of vegetation, contrasting with the stark landscapes of Tibet to the north, is due to the combined effect of strong sunshine, heavy monsoon rainfall and minimal glaciations. More than5000 species of plants have been identified throughout the country, including 46 varieties of rhododendron, and some 600 varieties of orchid. Many of these plants are used in the rich pharmacopoeia of traditional Tibetan and Bhutanese medicine. The three vegetation and climatic zones (tropical, temperate and alpine) found through the sub-Himalayan countries are also apparent in Bhutan.
