Ganesh Himal -I Expedition is a stunning adventure expedition in Ganesh Himal Region. Ganesh Himal region lies in the central-north region of Nepal Himalayas, and one of the most isolated and least explored area so far. Very small number of foreigners reach to the region and peak. Name of the peak comes from one Hindu deity ‘Ganesh’ – the God of fortune and well being – who has human body and elephant like head.

Ganesh Himal is located west to Langtang Himal and east to Manasalu which is separated by the Trishuli river and Budi Gandaki river respectively. Mt. Ganesh Himal I (7,429 m/……ft) – the snow shiny mountain also known as "Yangra Kangri ", is the highest peak of the sub-range.

The expedition trip begins with a drive to Arughat in Gorkha and trek up to Jagat from where you leave the path to Larke- La pass in Manasalu region and deviates towards remotely Ganesh Himal Base Camp. Ganesh Himal-I expedition period is approximately of sixteen days and the total trip is of five weeks.

Day wise Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Arrival in Kathmandu (1300 m):

    Arrival in Kathmandu. Meet with our friendly representative at the arrival terminal of only International airport. And, then you will be transferred to your hotel. You check-in at your Hotel and then after short rest you can go to explore market area of Thamel – where you can eat your supper, change money, buy some stuffs from supermarket, or buy trekking gears – if you need to do. Later we take you to our office for the trip briefing. Overnight at your hotel. Delay of any kind will postpone the events for next day according to feasibility.

  • Day 2 : Kathmandu Sightseeing - 4 hrs tour. Preparation of the Trek, Fix Equipments.

    You start the day with delicious breakfast served at your Hotel. The sightseeing involves tour of two religious and cultural sites of Pashupatinath temple and Boudhanath stupa. Pashupatinath Temple: It is one of the most celebrated Hindu temples in South-Asia. The temple is devoted to Lord Shiva. This place is a UNESCO world cultural heritage site. The Bagmati river flowing besides the temple is religiously and spiritually significant for Hindus where cremation of dead body takes place. Pashupatinath temple holds the most of prominence during Shivaratri – Shiva’s birthday and thousands of pilgrims gather in the night to celebrate the day. Boudhanath Stupa: It is one of the biggest Stupas in terms of size and height in Nepal and located in east of Kathmandu in the ancient trade route between India-Nepal and Tibet. The site is peaceful and culturally filled with intermixed influence of Tibetan and Sherpa roots. Stupa built in the trading route between Kathmandu and Tibet has four pairs of eyes directed towards all four directions. It is believed to be influenced by Mahayana Buddhist philosophy. After short tour of city we return to hotel and prepare for the trek. Overnight will be spent at hotel.

  • Day 3 : Participate Expedition Briefing at MoCTCA. Trip Preparation

    Prepare all equipments, gears, and be ready to move. You can purchase some equipments in Kathmandu if you still need. In the latter afternoon, attend expedition briefing session at the Department of Tourism of Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation. By now we prepare all necessary permits. Overnight at the Hotel.

  • Day 4 : Drive to Arughat (530m/ 1,708 ft) and Walk to Liding | 7 hrs drive

    Early in the morning drive to Arughat through hilly adventurous mountain road. This is famous market place of northern Gorkha and part of Dhading district and a gateway to Manaslu and partly to Ganesh Himal trekking/region. Once you arrive Arughat, walk to Liding along the Budi Gandaki river in the beautiful valley. You may cross many small streams and beautiful waterfalls that feed the Budi Gandaki river. Overnight in the tented camp.

  • Day 5 : Trek Liding to Khorla Besi (890 m/ 2894 ft) | 6-7 hrs walk:

    You start the day with delicious first breakfast in the mountain with fresh air. And then walk to Khorla Besi which is along the river Budhi Gandaki. Before you reach Khorla Besi, you pass small town called Macchakhola – the administrator center of Dharche rural municipality. Overnight in the tented camp.

  • Day 6 : Trek Khorla Besi to Jagat (1,340 m/ 4,396 ft) | 5-6 hrs walk:

    Enjoy your breakfast and then start to walk to Jagat. You have to walk numerous ups and downs before you reach to Tatopani – a natural hot spring in the bank of river. From here walk further up and cross the Budhi Gandaki river to the other side. Cross other smaller streams, past huge landslide area, cross the Budhi Gandaki river again, and finally reach to Jagat for the overnight stay at the tented camp.

  • Day 7 : Trek Jagat to Lokpa (2,240 m/ …….. ft) | 5-6 hrs walk:

    Enjoy your breakfast and then start to walk to Lokpa from Jagat. You have to walk numerous ups and downs today through the small settlements, and forest sections. Arrive Lokpa and overnight in the tented camp.

  • Day 8 : Trek Lokpa to Phedi (…….. m/ …….. ft):

    Trek to Phedi from Lokpa and overnight in the tented camp.

  • Day 9 : Trek Phedi to Domje (2,450 m/ …….. ft):

    Today you trek up to Domje. Overnight in the tented camp.

  • Day 10 : Trek Domje to Landan Kharka (3,700 m/ …….. ft):

    You gain good significant height i.e. 1300m and reach higher from where you start to feel the altitude. Overnight in the tented camp.

  • Day 11 : Trek Landan Kharka to Ganesh Himal Base Camp (4,800 m/ …….. ft)

    Today you reach to the Base of Ganesh Himal I at the height of 4,800m which will be your temporary home for little more than two weeks. From this place you will participate in acclimatize rotation, and climb the peak.

  • Day 12 : Climb Ganesh Himal I (7,429 m/……ft)

    You will climb Ganesh Himal in these days successfully. Our expert management, seasoned Sherpa climber support bring you to the summit. You will spend a day at the Base Camp again after the climbing to clean the Base Camp and pack the gears, equipments etc.

  • Day 28 : Return from Base Camp to Gumba Lungdang

    Today you return from the base camp. Trek to Gumba Lungdang and overnight at the tented camp.

  • Day 29 : Trek Gumba Lungdang to Dhampa Gompa

    Walk to Dhampa Gompa and overnight at the tented camp.

  • Day 30 : Trek to Lokpa

    You return back to Lokpa – where you left the Manaslu trail and deviated towards Ganesh Himal, and stayed one night on the way up to Base Camp. Overnight stay in the tented camp.

  • Day 31 : Trek to Jagat

    Trek back to Jagat and overnight in the tented camp.

  • Day 32 : Trek from Jagat to Khorla Besi.

    You walk all along the Budhi Gandaki river downstream which you walked upstream at the start of your expedition trip. Arrive Khorla Besi and overnight in the tented camp.

  • Day 33 : Trek to Liding

    Walk to Liding from Khorla Besi along theBudhi Gandaki River and overnight in the tented camp.

  • Day 34 : Trek to Arughat and Drive to Kathmandu

    You walk a while in the morning from Liding to Arughat and then drive to Kathmandu. Arrive Kathmandu and overnight in the Hotel.

  • Day 35 : Departure Day:

    As per your flight schedule, you will be transferred to the international airport of Kathmandu three hours prior to the flight time and your tour ends here.

Equipment Checklist

  • Climbing gear
  • Alpine climbing harness. Must have adjustable leg loops and fit over all clothing.
  • Two locking carabiners. Large, pear-shaped carabiner is best, screw gate type recommended
  • Three regular carabiners. Lightweight; BD Hot wire are recommended.
  • Ice axe w/leash. Light weight (Grivel Air tech, Black Diamond Raven, or Charlet Moser Snow Walker). Under 5’7” use 60cm; 5’7”- 6’2” use 65cm; over 6’2” use 70cm.
  • Plastic Mountaineering boots (Koflach Degree, Lowa Civetta, or Scarpa Alpha) or Leather Double Mountaineering boots (La Sportiva Olympic Mons, Boreal GI or equivalent; must be mountaineering/crampon compatible)
  • Crampons. Must be fit to plastic boots prior to trip, new-matic type recommended; include a simple repair kit (Grivel G12, Black Diamond Contact, or Charlet Moser Super 12)
  • Adjustable trekking poles.
  • Belay/rappel device (Figure 8 preferred)
  • Upper Body
  • Two cotton t-shirt.
  • One polypropylene t-shirt.
  • Two long sleeve polypropylene shirts. Lightweight, light colored for sunny days.
  • Two women sports bras. Synthetic, no cotton!
  • One Softshell. Marmot Dri-clime Wind Shirt, Patagonia Stretch Zephur or Krushell Jacket (R2 pullover acceptable).
  • Down/synthetic sweater or vest. Patagonia Puffball Jacket or Sweater preferred; R4 Jacket acceptable.
  • Hard shell jacket with hood. Water proof and breathable. Gore-Tex or equivalent is best, roomy enough to fit over multiple layers.
  • 1 expedition down parka with hood. This is probably your most important piece of clothing! It is important that your jacket is 700+ fill down, baffle construction (not sewn through seams) and has a thick insulated hood
  • Hand Wear
  • You will require two systems: one glove system for lower on the mountain and a mitten over mitt system for the cold temperatures encountered on summit day.
  • Two pairs liner gloves. Thin wool or polypropylene.
  • One pair warm gloves. Fleece or wool.
  • One pair expedition shell gloves.
  • One pair modular expedition shell mitts. Or Pro Mitts. If they do not have wrist straps consider sewing one on so that you can either attach it to your jacket or cinch the strap to your wrist so that you do not lose your mittens in high winds.
  • Head Gear
  • Warm hat. Wool or synthetic that covers your ears.
  • Balaclava
  • Face mask.
  • Shade hat or baseball cap.
  • Glacier glasses. 100% UV protection with side shields and a hard-sided storage case (e.g. Julbo or Cebe)
  • 1 pair extra sunglasses (also with UV protection in case your 1st pair breaks).
  • 1 ski goggles with UV protection
  • If you require prescription glacier glasses, you can get your lenses modified to your prescription.
  • Lower Body
  • Four pairs of liner socks. Polypropylene or Capilene.
  • Three pairs lightweight trekking socks.
  • Two pairs medium-heavy wool socks. Check boot fit with liner and wool socks on.
  • One pair nylon shorts.
  • One pair nylon pants for trekking and around camp.
  • Two pairs lightweight long underwear bottoms
  • One pair fleece pants with side zipper or “puff-ball pants”
  • One pair soft shell pants (e.g. Patagonia Guide pants or OR Granite Pants. Schoeller fabrics).
  • One pair of hard shell pants. Waterproof/breathable with full side zips, Gore-Tex or equivalent is best.
  • One pair gaiters. Make sure they will fit over plastic boots (OR Crocodiles or equivalent).
  • One pair down booties (optional).
  • One pair trail shoes for the hike to base camp and use at camp
  • One pair sandals or tennis shoes for Kathmandu and in camp
  • All clothing should be kept dry using waterproof stuff sacks or large plastic bags.
  • Pack
  • One lightweight internal frame pack (approx 4,000 cubic inches).
  • One daypack is optional for the approach hike, possible use on summit day and carry-on pack. If you plan to use it for your summit pack it must be large enough for your down jacket, misc. clothes, food and water. The Lowe Alpine Neutrino or Black Diamond Speed 28 are excellent, lightweight (16 oz.) choices.
  • One large (7,500+cu.in.) duffel bag for gear, must be durable for use on pack animals
  • Small padlock for duffel bag.
  • One small duffel bag for luggage storage in Kathmandu. We will supply complimentary duffel/kit bag for the item you buy in Kathmandu.
  • Sleeping Gear
  • One down sleeping bag rated to -10 F (Gore Dryloft or similar fabric helps protect down and dark colors speed drying time)
  • Sleeping pad. Full length closed cell foam (mandatory) and/or Therma-Rest for extra warmth and comfort
  • Miscellaneous
  • One first-aid kit with ibuprofen and any other doctor recommended medications.
  • Lip balm. At least SPF 20, 2 sticks. A string taped to the stick is helpful to hang around your neck
  • Sunscreen. At least SPF 40
  • Headlamp. Petzl Myobelt 3 or Black Diamond Polar Star.
  • Three Water bottles. 1 liter wide-mouth Nalgene (1 is a pee bottle).
  • Hydration bladder with drinking tube for lower mountain (optional)
  • One water bottle insulator.
  • Plastic mug w/snap-on lid, 16 oz. or larger.
  • Bowl and spoon. Plastic, small Tupperware works well. Lexan spoons are best.
  • Pocket knife. Small Swiss-army type.
  • Water purification. Iodine tablets or Polar-pure crystals
  • Toiletry kit. Be sure to include toilet paper stored in a plastic bag.
  • Three-Four Large plastic bags, for keeping miscellaneous gear dry.
  • Nylon stuff sacks. For food and gear storage (OR has a good selection); large Ziplocs are useful also.
  • Bandana.
  • Camp towel.
  • Ear plugs.
  • Hand wipes.
  • One small stainless steel thermos (optional).
  • Favorite snack foods (no more than 2 pounds).
  • Paperback books, cards, Walkman, etc.
  • Binoculars (optional for viewing the route from the lower camps).
  • Camera. 1 light weight point & shoot on the mountain, 1 large SLR type is optional for the trek in and base camp.
  • Fanny pack or wallet for travel documents, money & passport.
  • Passport and passport photos
  • Airline ticket (Please leave your airline ticket at our office in Kathmandu because we may required changing the date of your departure from Kathmandu)
