Day 1 : Arrival
You will be met at Port Elizabeth Airport by your guide and transferred 1-hour to Addo Elephant Park in the beautiful Eastern Cape.
After checking into your simple Addo Rest Camp enjoy a late afternoon game drive with your guide, where game viewing opportunities should present themselves almost immediately. In addition to elephants, we hope to see several species of antelope, zebra, wildebeest and maybe even giraffe - as well as several of the Big Five.
Day 2 : Addo Elephant Park
This morning enjoy a game drive in your guide's vehicle in the malaria free Addo Elephant Park, where you can view these magnificent animals which once roamed free in this area and were saved from extinction by this national park, which has also preserved the rare Cape buffalo and the flying dung beetle. Addo is home to all the Big Five - lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino - as well as many other interesting species.
The remainder of the morning is free to relax at your rest camp, before setting out again in the late afternoon on another game drive. You can hope to see ostrich, giraffe, hippo, kudu, crocodiles, antelope, waterbuck, warthogs, baboons and many other animals. With hundreds of different bird species in the region, outstanding bird watching is also guaranteed!
After a beautiful African sunset, enjoy the balmy evening and pristine stars of the Milky Way as you have never seen them before – as well as the spectacular Southern Cross.
Note: Vehicles are not allowed to drive off-road in any national park in South Africa.
Day 3 : Knysna
This morning we leave Addo and travel 4-hours along the scenic Garden Route to Knysna.
We travel past the Tsitsikamma Forest and across the dramatic Storms River Gorge where, time permitting, we can make a 2-hour detour to the Storms River Mouth.
We then continue driving past the beaches of Plettenberg Bay to Knysna. Check into your hotel in this area of outstanding natural beauty.
Note: In season we recommend bookings Knysna restaurants online in advance of your visit, to avoid disappointment.
Day 4 : Knysna
This morning transfer to the Knysna Waterfront in good time to board the MV John Benn for a relaxing 1.5-hour cruise to the 'Heads' of beautiful Knysna Lagoon, including lunch on board.
Afterwards we visit the view point, with balance of afternoon free to explore this small town with its many shops, restaurants and craft shops.
Day 5 : Monkeyland
Today enjoy a few close encounters with some of South Africa's amazing wildlife.
We start with a visit to the Monkeyland sanctuary, where you can see these primates up-close in their natural surroundings. We also visit Jukani Animal Centre and Birds of Eden sanctuary - located within a two-hectare dome spanning a gorge of indigenous forest. Here you can learn about different species in their natural habitat.
In the afternoon we visit Knysna Elephant Park, where you will have the opportunity to observe and feed one of these gentle giants. Provided booked in advance, there is also the optional opportunity to ride an elephant.
Day 6 : Garden Route
Today we travel 2-hours from Knysna, driving past the lakes of Sedgefield and the beaches of Wilderness on the beautiful Garden Route.
We continue through the spectacular Outeniqua Pass to the ostrich capital of Oudtshoorn in the arid Little Karoo. Here we visit the world-renowned Cango Caves – a vast series of underground halls and caverns formed over 20 million years ago in the foothills of the Swartberg Mountains. The caves, which extend for over 3 miles, contain spectacular stalagmites and stalactites and offer relatively easy access
Day 7 : Ostrich Farm
After visiting an Ostrich Farm to view these huge flightless birds in their natural surroundings, enjoy more of the dramatic and contrasting beauty of South Africa on your scenic 4-hour drive along spectacular Route 62. During our journey we enjoy wine tasting at two Wine Estates, one renowned for its port and the other for its wine.
Continue to the small seaside town of Hermanus where, from July to November, southern right and humpback whales come to breed and considered the best location for land-based Whale Watching in the world. Once severely endangered, these magnificent creatures of the deep are now breeding successfully in the area due to a major international conservation effort. Check in to your hotel in Hermanus and enjoy the natural beauty of the coastline.
Day 8 : Cape Town
Today we leave Hermanus and drive 2-hours to Cape Town, travelling along the scenic coastal route through Betty's Bay and Gordon Bay, with spectacular views of the Cape Peninsula and False Bay.
Along the way we visit Harold Porter Botanical Gardens with its magnificent indigenous fynbos plants.
Enjoy an included Wine Tasting at a wine estate and stop at the Stoney Point Penguin Colony, before continuing to Cape Town.
Check in to your hotel within sight of Table Mountain and relax in this beautiful city.
Day 9 : Cape Town
Today enjoy a full day private tour of the highlights of Cape Town.
We start with a short City Tour - driving past Greenmarket Square, the Houses of Parliament and District Six. Weather permitting, we continue to Table Mountain which we ascend by cable car to enjoy one of the world’s most famous views.
We continue to beautiful Kirstenbosch Gardens, nestled on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain and regarded as one the most beautiful botanic gardens in the world. Bequeathed to the nation by Cecil John Rhodes, the garden was established 1913. There is an avenue of camphor trees, a beautiful protea and fynbos garden, useful plants garden, sculpture garden and a dell garden as well as a world class collection of indigenous South African flora. Don’t miss the magnificent steel and timber Centenary Tree Canopy Walkway (fondly known as the 'Boomslang' - or tree snake) that winds around the mountainside. Wonderful summer sunset concerts are held in the gardens on Sunday evenings from December to March.
Day 10 : Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve
Today enjoy a full day private tour to the beautiful Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve peninsula.
We start with a short boat trip from Hout Bay to view Cape Fur seals at Seal Island and continue via Chapman’s Peak Drive to spectacular Cape Point where you may see baboons, ostrich and perhaps even dolphins or whales in season (July/November).
On the return journey we pass through naval Simons Town and visit the resident penguin colony at Boulders Beach, before returning to your hotel in the late afternoon.
Day 11 : Cape Town
At leisure to relax and explore the "Mother City" of Cape Town.
Many optional activities are available in this beautiful city. You can visit Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned (advance booking essential in season) and explore the vibrant Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.
You can visit world famous Kirstenbosch Gardens or simply relax on golden Camps Bay beach – the choice is yours.
Day 12 : Stellenbosch Winelands
Today enjoy a full day private tour to the renowned Stellenbosch Winelands, travelling through the scenic Franschhoek Valley where a handful of French Huguenot refugees started South Africa’s now famous wine industry.
We visit two wine estates, with included wine tastings, and the historic university town of Stellenbosch before enjoying a picnic lunch at a wine estate (own account).
In the afternoon we visit a third wine estate and the Cheetah Outreach project in Somerset West. This community-based programme seeks to raise awareness of the plight of the cheetah and campaign for its survival. Observe these magnificent endangered cats up close, before returning to Cape Town.
Day 13 : Departure
Transfer to Cape Town Airport for your flight home.
