9 Nights / 10 Days
The tour offers eight days of riding through an area best described as motorcycle adventure touring heaven. The region is known as the Garden Route and for good reason too. It boasts a variety of stunning experiences including amazing scenery, winding roads, lagoons, a beautiful coastline and verdant, ecologically diverse vegetation ranging from natural forests, vineyards and what is locally referred to as the Klein Karoo landscape. The region is known for its mild climate throughout the year, which makes it a favourite holiday destination for locals as well as international visitors all year round.
The tour includes accommodation at a game farm which offers nature drives, the Cango Caves, the Knysna Forest, the southernmost tip of Africa, together with no less than 22 spectacular mountain passes, are all included in this trip. All accommodation and meals are carefully selected to ensure the ultimate in luxury and cuisine.
There is indeed a lot to experience over the eight day tour, where each day’s ride is carefully planned to allow enough time for completing the distance comfortably while stopping and visiting the many attractions along the route. Your tour guide grew up and spent many years living in this area. His passion, experience and local knowledge will guarantee this to be a trip you will never forget.
A private car will transfer you from the airport to your hotel where you will meet your hosts from Africa Twin Adventures, waiting to give you a warm South African welcome. Early afternoon arrival (around 2pm) is recommended. During the afternoon of your day of arrival you are free to explore and enjoy the city of Cape Town and all the iconic sights she has on offer at your leisure, until we convene for a meet and greet with your tour colleagues over dinner. The welcome dinner is provided by Africa Twin Adventures and will include an official tour briefing and details around administrative arrangements. We will also provide you with a Travel Pack that includes a detailed road book, a map of South Africa and an African Twin Adventures T-shirt and Jacket.
We collect the bikes in the morning and head East on a short stretch of highway/freeway before turning onto a road that takes us through serene countryside and beautiful vineyards towards a small town called Stellenbosch. We follow the curves of the stunning Helshoogte mountain pass before we stop and break for lunch in the picturesque town of Franschoek. Franschoek mountain pass follows, including various look-out points and fantastic views to admire. This route will provide plenty photo opportunities for the camera enthusiasts. From there we then follow the twisty roads all the way to the wine producing town of Robertson and settle in at our luxury lodgings to enjoy a traditional South African braai (barbeque) and a good night’s rest.
After breakfast we saddle up and take a leisurely ride down the legendary Route 62, stopping at small country towns along the way to sample local cuisine and enjoy the scenery. Our overnight stop is the small hamlet of Calitzdorp, also referred to as the Port (sweet wine) capital of South Africa. We book into our lodgings and enjoy the sun set over the Klein Karoo and local hospitality.
In the morning we continue our scenic journey through the twists and turns of the back roads to the Swartberg mountain pass, stopping at the summit to enjoy the amazing views. From there we descend into the historic town Prince Albert to enjoy lunch and refreshments. From here we head towards the very well-known Meiringspoort pass. The pass is jaw-dropping as it carves its way through the mighty Swartberg mountains, allowing us to travel over 25 river crossings (bridges) over a distance of 20kms. We leave the mountains behind and head towards the town of Oudtshoorn. Home to the world famous Cango Caves, ostrich farms and various game farms hosting amazing species of African wild life. There will be time to explore this town and its surroundings during the afternoon. If you would like to do more riding, we can arrange for you to ride an ostrich – this usually makes for a lot of fun and many photo opportunities.
Day five sees us heading back to the coast, meandering along verdant forest roads and passes as we make our way to the picturesque coastal town of Knysna. Knysna is labelled one of South Africa’s premier holiday destinations. Upon arrival at our lodgings there will be time to relax and sip sundowners while overlooking the lagoon.
This is the shortest daily ride of the trip but it is jam packed with unforgettable sights and many photo opportunities abound. We will ride through eight awe-inspiring mountain passes and gorges and stop regularly to enjoy our surroundings and take pictures. From there we wind our way through the forests and head back the coast, arriving at the beautiful town of Wilderness with its unique views over the ocean and huge golden dunes and beaches. We enjoy lunch together before we head back into the forest for a short ride to our overnight accommodation in George.
The day will start with an unhurried cruise along the coastal road with views over the Indian Ocean, before heading West, back towards Cape Town. Along the way we will pass through the historic town of Swellendam nestled at the foot of the Langeberg. The town is very well known in the architectural space for its well preserved Cape Dutch and Victorian buildings. You will once again experience South African hospitality at its best at the upscale overnight accommodation.
After a short morning ride, we will cross the Breede River on the Malgas pontoon, which is the last operational hand drawn pontoon in South Africa. We head towards Cape Agulhas, the geographic Southern tip of the African continent and the meeting point for the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. After lunch we meander along the coast through quaint, picturesque fishing villages until we reach yet another scenic coastal town – Hermanus. This is a favourite holiday destination for many South Africans and international guests, best known for its whale watching season.
This is our last day of riding before the return to Cape Town, but it is no less spectacular – including twisty coastal roads and remarkable ocean views. We will hug the coast through the Kogelberg Nature Reserve where this exhilarating road snakes its way between the mountains and the sea. After a stop in Strand for lunch we finally make our way back to Cape Town.
This is our last evening together and there will be time to catch our breath, reminisce, share photos and memories when we visit one of Cape Town’s finest restaurants to round off an unforgettable trip.
Time to say goodbye, tot siens, hamba kahle.
