Day 1 : Arrive in Paro (2280m).
On the flight to Paro Airport, you will be welcomed by the spectacular panoramic views of Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga and other Himalayan peaks (includes the sacred Mount Jomolhari and Jichu Drake in Bhutan). Upon arrival at Paro Airport, you will be received by our representatives and Check in hotel-Paro.
Your first experience begins on this mystical Kingdom of Thunder Dragon from Drukyel Dzong – built in 1647 to commutate Bhutanese victory over than Tibetan invaders, which now are ruins. Next visit will continue Kyichu Lhakhang, One of the oldest Temple in Bhutan built in 7th Century by Tibetan King, Songtsen Gampo and the second temple built in 1968. Overnight in Paro
Day 2 : Paro - Thimphu (2350m).
After breakfast, we will start visit to TA DZONG - (The National Museum) initially the watch tower to defend Paro valley converted to the National Museum, which contains large assortment of paintings, statues, stamps and old utensils. After visiting Ta Dzong, we can walk downhill and visit PARO Dzong - Known as fortress of hips of jewels built in 1646 and now houses the monastic body and district administrative offices. After visiting dzong, we walk over a stone inlaid path through the traditional cantilever bridge, which offers a good view of the architectural wonder of the Dzong as well as life around it. We will drive 1 ½ hours to our capital, Thimphu, for lunch.
After lunch, we will start our sightseeing in Thimphu by visiting the Memorial Chorten (a stupa) built in 1974 in memory of the 3rd King of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. Next sight Takin Zoo in Motithang-Mini Zoo which contain takins, rare animals and the national animal of Bhutan. Radio tower, it offers splendid views of the city from a hilltop festooned with prayer flags. Tashichhodzong, the “fortress of the glorious religion", built in 1641. It houses His Majesty’s Secretariat and the Central Monk Body. In the evening, you can leisurely walk through the Thimphu town. Overnight in Thimphu.
Day 3 : Thimphu sightseeing
After breakfast we visit Semtokha Dzong, built in 1627 and it is the oldest Dzong in the country and now houses the School for Buddhist Studies. Next National Institute of Zorig Chusum, (commonly known as the Painting School), which includes Thangka painting, wood carving, sculpture, appliqué and metal work. Near and above visit the Institute of Traditional Medicines Services, where the medicinal herbs abundant in the kingdom are compounded and dispensed.
In the afternoon, we start our visit by visiting the Kuensel Phodrang (Buddha Point) for a spectacular view of Thimphu Valley. The largest statue of the Buddha in Bhutan is situated here. Next we will also visit the National Textile Museum. This museum has substantial collection of antique textile artifacts which includes the Royal Collection, warp pattern weaves and textiles from indigenous fibers.If you are interested to get some souvenirs, we can visit the Handicrafts Emporium and other handicrafts shops where Bhutanese textiles and other arts and crafts can be purchased. Overnight in Thimphu.
Note :Short hike outside Thimphu City to Tango, Cheri & Phajoding Monasteries and other sight in Thimphu to visit include National Library, National Folk & Heritage Museum, Changankha Lhakhang. Centenary Vegetables Market, Archery range and Zangtopleri Lhakhang in Changlinmithang. Botanical Garden at Serbithang are recommended and may need one to two days additional night to spent at Thimphu.
Day 4 : Thimphu – Punakha (1280m).
Drive towards Punakha, which may takes about 2½ hours. As you leave Thimphu, the road climbs over the Dochu-La pass (3088 meters), which on a clear day offers an incredible view of Himalayan peaks. The place is further beautified by the 108 stupa built by the eldest Queen Mother Her Majesty Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk and hundreds of prayers flags fluttering about in the wind. After the pass the road drops through changing vegetation into semitropical lowland Punakha - Wangdi valley at around 1280m.
En-route, make a 20 minutes pleasant hike to visit the Chimi Lhakhang (Temple of Fertility), which is situated in the centre of the Valley. This temple is found by Lama Drukpa Kuenley, the “Divine Madman”. It is widely believed that couples who visited the temple were blessed miraculously with children.
After lunch, visit Punakha Dzong,The ancient capital of Bhutan and now winter residence of Chief Abbot (Je Khempa), built in the year 1637 in between Pho Chu and Mo chu river. Your trip to Punakha will not be completed without enjoying the impressive colourful wall painting and high standards of woodwork done for this Dzong. In the evening, you can leisurely walk through the Punakha town. Overnight in Punakha.
Day 5 : Punakha to Phobjikha (2993m).
After breakfast, we drive up the valley and trek for nearly an hour to visit Khamsum Yulley Chorten (stupa)- constructed in 1992 as one of the three such chortens in the world, one being the National Memorial Chorten in Thimphu.
After early lunch, set off on the road to Phobjikha. The road from Punakha passes through the town of Wangdiphodrang and starts the climb from Chuzomsa steadily for about 3 hours to Phobjikha - a glacial valley on the periphery of the north western tip of the Black Mountain National Park. The valley is a wide, beautiful alpine wetland valley, with mostly pine trees, interspersed with rhododendron trees. Check in hotel and overnight in Phobjikha.
Day 6 : Phojikha - Bumthang (2600 m) via Trongsa (2200 m).
After breakfast, visit Gangtey Monastery- The only Nyingma monastery in western Bhutan and also seat of the body reincarnation of Pemalingpa, built in the 17th century. Next visit Phobjikha valley is well known as the winter home for the endangered Black-necked cranes that migrate from its northern habitats in Tibet and Siberia. Continue to visit the Black-Necked Crane Information Centre.
After lunch, we drive to Bumthang which takes over 4½ hours to reach through the black mountains at Pele la pass (3420m). From here, on a clear day, you can see the Mt. Jumolhari, and other mountains across the valley. The route passes crossing at Chendebji chorten, Trongsa and Youtongla pass (3425m).After the pass, descend into Chume valleys and stop at the roadside village of Zugney to see the weaving of Yathra (deep colored wool textile, a pattern typical to these parts of the country). Overnight in Bumthang.
Day 7 : Bumthang - Trongsa
After breakfast, visit Jambay Lhakhang - One of the oldest Temple in Bhutan built in 7th Century by Tibetan King, Songtsen Gampo. Kurjey Lhakhang - Associated with Guru Rinpochoe, who brought Tantric Buddhism in Bhutan. Next Wangdi Chholing Palace, Tamshing Lhakhang. After lunch visit Jakar Dzong - historic Jakar Dzong, builtt in 1646 AD by Minjur Tenpa, the third Druk Desi (Temporal ruler) and you can scroll through the Chamkhar town.
Evening drive to Trongsa will take 2½ hours passing the Youtongla pass and stopping other places along the way to admire the landscape or to take pictures. Overnight in Trongsa.
Day 8 : Trongsa – Paro
After breakfast, visit Trongsa Dzong- The biggest dzong and located in central region of the Country. Long before you reach it, you see the resplendent Trongsa Dzong in the valley centre. Its labyrinth of temples, corridors, offices and living quarters for the monks add up to a masterpiece in Bhutanese architecture preserved through professional restoration in 2004. Next visit Ta Dzong – built as watch tower to guard Trongsa Dzong and now houses the museum.
Thruepang Palace - It is the ancestral home of Bhutan’s royal family from where the first two kings rules the kingdom. Afternoon drive back to Paro will take 5 hours, en-route stopping along the way to admire the landscape or to take pictures.
Day 9 : Taktsang excursion
After breakfast, we take a morning hike up to Taktsang Monastery, also known as Tiger’s Nest. The climb up to the viewpoint will take around 3 hours and from there you will enjoy a spectacular view of the monastery clinging to the side of the cliff. It is said that in the 8th century Guru Rinpoche flew on the back of a tigress from eastern Bhutan to this place and meditated in a cave here for 3 months. There have been shrines at this sacred place for many centuries. The principal Lhakhang of the present monastic complex dates from 1692.
Taktsang was damaged severely by fire in 1998 but has now been fully restored to its former beauty. After lunch at the viewpoint cafeteria, walk back down to the road and drive back to the hotel. Rest of the afternoon free for strolling around Paro town. Overnight in Paro.
Day 10 : Departure from Bhutan.
Today, your guide will escort you to Paro Airport to bid you farewell. We hope your stay in Bhutan will be a memorable one. This introductory trip to Bhutan will impress you and make you want to come and see more of Bhutan in the future.
