Day 5 : Naxos ( Free Day)
This day is also at leisure for you to immerse into the unique beauty of Naxos. With its long history, important monuments and intense tourist life, it occupies a distinct place among the Cycladic islands. No matter how many days you stay on Naxos, there will always surely be more hidden niches to discover, beaches you haven’t seen, towers and forts you did not have time to visit, ancient temples whose secrets remain a mystery.
Below are only a few of the places you can visit
• Sagri village, with the ancient temple dedicated to Apollo and Demeter. The great value of the temple lies in the fact that it is an all- marble temple, whose ancient material is preserved in more than 50%.
• Halki village, with its mansions and the interesting Byzantine church of Panagia Protothroni. There you can also visit the citrus distillery which produces the homonymous local liqueur.
• Filoti village, set amphitheatrically on the slopes of two hills at the foot of Mount Zas, is the largest of Naxiot villages.
• Mount Zas, at an ultimate peak of 1,004 metres, is the Cyclades’ tallest mountain. It’s no wonder that Zeus, father of the mythical Greek Gods, would be raised here, while his son, Dionysus god of wine and merriment, would be raised here too, more specifically at a cave in the mountain known as Zas Cave.
• Apiranthos village is built at the foot of Mt. Fanari. Venetian towers, pretty, old two-storey houses, marble paved alleys with arches above them, picturesque squares combine to create a rare atmosphere. Apiranthos has 3 interesting museums. The Archaeological Museum mainly hosts finds of the Proto-Cycladic period, the Geological Museum features some rare and unique items among its approximately 2,000 exhibits, the Natural History Museum includes a collection of the area’s fauna, flora and a small aquarium, while the Folklore Museum displays traditional fabrics, embroidery and tools.
• The northern village of the island, Apollonas, which takes its name from an unfinished Kouros statue at the entrance of an ancient marble quarry. Overnight in Naxos.
