Vesuvius, along with Etna and Stromboli, is one of three active volcanoes on the Italian national territory. It is considered one of the symbols of the city of Naples, even though it is actually a real bugbear for those who live in its immediate surroundings: his alleged first eruption, which occurred in the distant 79 d. C., destroyed Pompeii, Herculaneum and the ancient city of Stabiae and Oplontis.
The Vesuvius crater today has a diameter that measures approximately 700 meters, a circumference of about 12 kilometers and a depth of 200 meters. It is a formation that includes two volcanoes: Mount Somma (dormant) and Vesuvius (Gran Cono). Since 1995, Vesuvius is a national park and you can walk up to its summit.
The best-known tourist route to run on Vesuvius is that of the Great Cone, leading through a steep trail to the mouth of the crater. The paved road leads about 200 meters from the top; from that point on, along a spiral walkway around the mountain, you can get to the crater. Entrance tickets to the crater (Eur 5 per person)
