Tips
Day 1 :
Transfer from airport or hotel.
Airport transfer: All participants need to do is look for our booth in the baggage claim area at Iquitos airport. We’re easy to find; located not far from the restrooms at a booth decorated with our name and logo (a hoatzin bird’s head surrounded by a diamond-shaped border).
Following the airport or hotel transfer, participants will be transported on a 4-hour journey up the Amazon River as far as the confluence with the Tahuayo River. Our rainforest lodge is situated on the banks of this tributary of the Amazon.
That evening, guests will be invited to take part in a nocturnal excursion.
Day 2 :
Venturing into the forest from the main lodge, guests will be offered the choice of a series of excursions in the forests within and around the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Reserve, giving them ample time to acclimate to the Amazon rainforest environment. During these forest excursions, a naturalist guide will offer a detailed interpretation of the Amazon habitat and discuss with participants the different activities they can choose from. The services of a private guide and the service of tailoring the itinerary to match the interests and abilities of the participants are provided at no additional cost.
Below we list some examples of the excursions available:
Canopy platforms and zip lines
Hikes into the forest behind the lodge, where guests are likely to spot a number of typical rainforest species, such as pygmy marmosets, owl monkeys, yellow-crowned brush-tailed rats, wire-tailed manakins, black tamarins, saddle-backed tamarins and trogons.
Hike to Lake Tapaje, exploration by canoe.
Canoeing into a flooded forest ecosystem, we will pass giant ficus trees and observe hoatzin birds and horned screamers, as well as searching for caimans from our observation platform.
Motorboat to trailhead, for a hike into terra firme forest and into an area where poison dart frogs can be observed, and a bat cave can be visited and explored.
Motorboat to Lake Charo to observe pink dolphins and enjoy a swim. En route to the lake, the guide will encourage participants to keep an eye out for squirrel monkeys, sloths and raptors. It is also possible to fish for piranha in this part of the forest.
Visit native village of El Chino: Here we will visit a local handcraft cooperative, a village shaman (depending on his availability), as well as visiting a rainforest farm and the local school.
