Jawai, a small village named after the river of the same name has now become an attraction for tourist. The area is mainly known as Jawai Dam because it is located near the dam and it comes under Sumerpur Tehsil of the Pali district in Rajasthan. The famous dam was built by Maharaja Umaid Singh of Jodhpur and the village cover an area of 500 square kilometers. Being located at the embankment, Jawai gives you an amazing view of the river.
Adding to its beauty are the granite rocks and hills which surrounds the whole area. Jawai is also known for its sanctuaries for leopards, birds, and crocodiles. It is also called the winter paradise for migratory birds with more than 100 species frequenting every year. Alongwith a great variety of birds, Jawai is home to panthers, hyenas, chinkaras, nilgai, bears, and wolves as well. However, it is chiefly known for its human-friendly leopards.
Indian Leopards
Leopards are undoubtedly the biggest attraction in this area. The most fascinating part is that they are very familiar with the locals and there hasn’t been a single incident of leopard attack in the villages nearby. The people have also reciprocated this behavior by keeping the habitat of big cats uninterrupted. It is a swashbuckling experience to watch them roam around freely.
The behavior of Jawai leopards is much talked about because they live very close to the human settlement and are surprisingly friendly with them. They attack only the wild animals at night and do not even try to prey on the cattle reared by the locals. And that’s why, it is very easy to watch them even at the daytime and they have never attacked any human being ever.
Day 1 : JAWAI BANDH / LEOPARD SAFARI
Jawai has acclaimed its worldwide recognition for its unique ecosystem. Here, humans and leopards live together without invading each other’s land.
Leopards in the Jawai region house in natural caves shaped by lava millions of years ago.
They eat cattle and sheep from the many herds here and have adopted a lifestyle where they do not need to hurt anyone to survive.
Amazingly, there hasn’t been a single case of misconduct by leopards in the past hundred years in this region.
Leopards roam freely here without any worries, which is a jackpot for any wildlife enthusiast.
Other than this, the unvegetated terrain of Jawai with rocky outcrops leaves no room for the leopards to camouflage.
Hence, making leopard-spotting very easy and accessible here.
