Jomolhari Trek is one of the most popular trekking routes in Bhutan. With altitude differences of 2,500m and nearly 5,000m it offers a wide range of landscapes, fauna and flora. The highlight of this trek is the spectacular view of Mount Jomolhari from Jomolhari Basecamp (Jangothang).

Day wise Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Paro Arrival

    Arrive Paro. You will be welcomed by our Guide who will be waiting for your arrival. . Then you can start our cultural sightseeing of paro by visiting the 15 century old Dungtse lhakhang which one of old unique temple. Then drive up to visit Ta dzong (watch tower) built in 1951 to use as a watch tower to defend Ringpung dzong and Paro valley during the time of war and converted into national museum in 1967 which recorded in UNESCO world heritage. Unfortunately original museum was destroyed by the earthquake in September 2011 but one can still see a magnificent collection of Bhutanese artifacts like costumes, religious Tahngka paintings, arm weapons, and a fascinating collection of Bhutan stamps in new gallery. Then will visit Paro Ringpung dzong which is one of the finest example of Bhutanese architecture. If still feel energetic you can take a short walk down to the cantilever bridge. After that leisure in Paro town.

  • Day 2 : Hike to Taktshang

    Today take a day hike to the sacred Taktsang Goenpa (tiger nest monastery) which was built on the rock face at 900 meters above the valley floor. The history says guru Rinphoche during his second visit to Bhutan in 8th century have flew to the place riding on a tigress to subdue demon Singye Samdrup and meditated here for three months. Later temporary ruler of Bhutan GyalsheTenzin Rabgay has built monastery in 16 century. It one of the most highlighted holy site of the tourist as well it is a place where Bhutanese people belive they must visit once in their life time. Towards evening will visit one of the oldest temple in Bhutan kyichu lhakhang built in 7th century. Night halt at Paro

  • Day 3 : Drive to Chelela for acclimatization and the drive to Sharna Zampa

    Today in morning drive for 45 minutes to chelela pass at 3890 metres where you will have a charming view of second highest Himalaya of Bhutan mountain Jomolhari (7456 meters mountain of god) in fine weather .From the road point you can walk up the incline for 1.5 hour towards the highest point of 4500 meters for the better acclimatization to start trek, from the point you will get better view of mount Jomolhari and other peak such as Kanchenjunga. Walk down the hill ridges through rhododendron and hemlock forest to Kila Geonpa,a nunnery monastery inhabited by about 40 nuns. From here you can return to the car and drive back to paro for lunch. Afternoon drive about 2 hours to first camp site Shana where the Trek begins at next day. On the way there will be a time to visit Drukgyal dzong(victory fortress)which was built in 1644 to celebrate the victory over Tibetan invaders and destroyed by the fire in 1951.Continue your drive along the feeder road from Drukgyal and when you reach to Shana you will meet trekking crew waiting with evening tea for you.

  • Day 4 : Sharna Zampa – Thangthangkha(Start of Trek)

    Distance 22 km, 7-8 hours, 770 m ascent, 10 m descent, camp altitude 3,610 m. On this long day, the trail continues with lots of small ups and downs. After going uphill through the river valley the valley finally narrows gradually to a mere path which descends to a meadow where a camp will be set up. From here, if weather permits, you will have the first great view of Mt. Jomolhari

  • Day 5 : Thangthangkha - Jangothang

    Distance 19 km, 5-6 hours, 480 m ascent, camp altitude 4,080 m. If you did not see Mt. Jomolhari the previous evening, you will still have a chance to get a great view early this morning. This morning the trek continues up the Paro Chhu valley which widens into patches of alpine meadow and scanty growths of forest. You will cross an army checkpoint along the way and enjoy a spectacular view of high mountain ridges and snow-capped peaks. In this area yaks and their herder’s homes become a regular feature of the landscape. Passing the villages Soe, Takethang and Dangochang is another asset on this day. After reaching Jangothang, one of the most beautiful campsites of the Himalayas, you will again have a spectacular view of Mount Jomolhari.

  • Day 6 : Jangothang Halt

    The rest day in Jangothang provides plenty of possibilities for day hikes with great views of lakes and snow capped mountains such as Jomolhari and Jichu Drake. There are good chances to spot some blue sheep on the upper slopes of the valley. Jangothang is a perfect environment for your acclimatization. You can also trek up to Tosoh or hike around the area. There are good short hiking trails in three directions. Jomolhari and its subsidiary mountain chains lie directly west, Jichu Drake to the north and there are a number of unclimbed peaks to the east.

  • Day 7 : Jangothang to Lingshi

    Distance 16km, 6-7 hours, 810m ascent, 1,090m descent, camp altitude 3,800m. The trail leads to a last settlement in the valley and drops to the Pa Chhu(river). Passing the lake of Tshophu (4,380m) you will climb up steeply to Bhonte La pass at 4,890 m, the highest point of this trek route. Reaching the Dhumzo Chhu(river), you trek downstream passing the few houses of Soi Yaktsa (Dhumzo) to arrive at your camp.

  • Day 8 : Lingshi to Shodu

    Distance 22km, 8-9 hours, 940m ascent, 920m descent, camp altitude 4,080m.
    The trail climbs up to the Yelila pass at an altitude of 4,930m. From the pass, on a clear day you will get an excellent view of Jumolhari, Tserimgang and Masanggang. The trek from the pass to the campsite at Shodu is a steep downhill.

  • Day 9 : Shodu to Barshong

    Distance 16km, five to six hours, 250m ascent, 670m descent, camp altitude 3,710m. The trail follows the Thimphu Chhu through rhododendron forests, past beautiful waterfalls along the way. The valley narrows till the path takes to the slopes and gradually ascends to the ruins of Barshong Dzong.

  • Day 10 : Barshong/Domshisa to Dodena and back to Thimphu.

    We continue the trail following the wangchu river through dense hemlock and rhododendron forest via Dolam kencho.Before emerging into pastureland we climb to a mountain meadow at 3428 meters and over a small pass to Dodena road point, north of Thimphu.A vehicle will be waiting collect us with some refreshment arrange by our company and drive for 30 minutes to capital city of Bhutan,Thimphu.check in to hotel have a relaxing time and go for a leisurely walk around the town to feel the atmosphere of capital with its traditional and modernize photogenic citizens .

  • Day 11 : Thimphu sightseeing

    Today we will start our sightseeing by visiting beautiful memorial chorten, built in 1974 by her majesty y Azhi Phuntsho Choden Wangchuk.Bhuddha point where you will see 169 feet big seating Buddha which one of the largest Buddha statue in the world as well to see the bird's eye view of Thimphu city.Changangkha temple which was built in 12 century. Inside the temple one can see the original old wall paintings and the unique statue of god of compassion in the form of 11 faces in seating poster. Takin reservation centre to see our Bhutan's unique national animal, the Takin to see the art work of Zorigchusum(13 traditional arts and crafts) you can visit painting school. Then will visit Folk Heritage Museum to see typical example of traditional farmhouse and textile weaving center at changzamtok were one can see traditional weaving style of fabric. An optional visit of Tashichoe dzong or oldest fortress Simtokha Dzong which was built in 1629. Night stay in Thimphu

  • Day 12 : Drive to Paro International Airport

    Depending on your flight departure time early in the morning your guide will take you for 1 hour drive to paro airport to see you off onto your flight and wish you good journey and Tashidelek(goodbye/good luck).
