Day 1 : Welcome to Kamchatka
You will be met at the airport before transferring to the hotel in Paratunka resort area.
Here you’ll have free time to rest and are encouraged to relax after your long flight in the hotel’s spring water pool.
The resort is situated 70 kilometres away from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky,
the peninsula’s main city.
Day 2 : Starichkov Island and Avachinskaya Bay Sea Cruise
Today we take in the breathtaking scenery of the twisting coastline, try your fishing skills from the boat or relax on a deck and enjoy sweeping views of the peninsula and its many volcanoes from the shores of Kamchatka.
With a twisting coastline cut by numerous smaller bays, Avachinskaya bay is one of the most picturesque spots in the Kamchatka peninsula.
After very early breakfast, you will transfer to a seaport in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (PKC) for a boat trip across the bay, which will take about 4-5h.
The trip will meet the Pacific Ocean and visit Starichkov Island, a nature reserve in the bay, which abounds in puffins, loons and other forms of water bird.
With a picnic on deck, the cruise will include sweeping views of the peninsula, outlook onto the Pacific Ocean and a chance to see many of the bay’s sea life including otters and sea lions.
After the boat trip, you head on a city tour, visiting the Kamchatka museum of local lore, the best viewpoint of PKC, fish market and the city centre.
One of the oldest towns in the Far East, Petropavlovsk’s seemingly endless main avenue is lined with mostly grim Soviet block housing, and there are just a smattering of historic buildings in the old town along the seafront. That said, locals are friendly and the glorious volcanoes are just a short drive, hike or helicopter journey away.
Day 3 : Vachkazhets Mountain Trek
Hike around Mount Vachkazhets, a volcano which was once a one-cone volcano before exploding and splitting into three different summits, and explore its surroundings.
Two hours transfer by 4 or 6WD truck to Mount Vachkazhets, for a 4h trek to the mountain cirque with a visit to the lake and waterfall.
Vachkazhets and its surroundings are among the most beautiful spots in Kamchatka, telling a story stretching back to ancient times when Vachkazhets was a one-cone volcano before exploding and dividing into three parts.
Guests will be able to take in the scenic surrounds and appreciate the serene quiet at a picnic lunch during the trek.
*note, due to the road and weather conditions the total time of trekking can be changed.
Day 4 : Bystraya River Slow Pace Rafting And Fishing And Malki Hot Springs
Today we invite you on a slow pace rafting on Bystraya River for an afternoon of ‘catch-and-release’ fishing (2.5 – 3h). The second longest river in Kamchatka, the Bystraya flows along the Ridge and is inhabited with fish such as the Pacific salmon, east Siberian char, grayling and Rainbow trout.
Next, we head to the Malkinskiye (Malki) hot thermal springs for relaxing and soaking in the natural healing waters. The Malki hot thermal springs are situated in the valley of the Bystraya river, at a great thermal territory of underground natural springs.
Day 5 : Avachinsky Volcano and Khalaktyrsky Beach
Enjoy a challenging ascent of Avachinsky volcano or an easy hiking experience of the Mount Camel.
In the evening we head to black volcanic beach - Khalaktyrsky, for a short walk and amazing views of the Pacific Ocean.
Today, you will see Kamchatka from a different perspective as we ascend the Avachinsky volcano (2,751m). One of the most active volcanoes in Kamchatka, the Avachinsky volcano is filled with hardened lava above which you can see rising clouds of fumaroles. In the morning you jump into the truck for a 2h drive to the volcano’s base camp.
A climb to the top of Avachinsky starts from 890m above sea level, it takes up to 10h there and back with elevation about 1,750m. It is suitable for climbers of all levels, treating any traveller to stunning views across the vast Kamchatka peninsula.
The trek itself is quite long and tiring, so for those who not ready for such long ascending, the easy hike (3h) to the nearby Camel Mountain
(1,100m) is offered for you.
From the top of the mountain you can see beautiful views of the Avachinskaya bay and the surroundings of Petropavlovsk and Nalychevo valley.
Afterwards we head to the Pacific Ocean coast for a short hike at the Khalaktyrsky Beach, which is a popular place among the locals and surfers from around the world. The long coastal line over 30km is covered with black volcanic sand and in summer is full of blossoming flowers and bushes.
The water temperature does not exceed +15C even in the hottest summer days, but locals still come here for a short swim and sunbathing.
Day 6 : Optional Scenic Helicopter Tours
Optional scenic helicopter flight to Kuril Lake for brown bears watching or to the Valley of Geysers and Uzon caldera can be organised on this day.
The choice is yours to either enjoy free day exploring Petropavlovsk or Paratunka at your leisure, or join one of the optional* scenic helicopter flight to Kurilskoye (Kuril) Lake for brown bears watching or to the Valley of Geysers.
Option 1: Helicopter tour to Kuril Lake for brown bears watching
Kuril Lake is without a doubt one of the best places on earth to observe these mighty mammals as they hunt the salmon that gather here in their millions during the summer months. One-hour flight gives you bird’s-eye views of volcanoes Gorely, Mutnovsky and Vilyuchinsky and lands on
the shores of Kuril Lake, where we observe the salmon run, get to know the ecosystem of the lake, visit the fish counting fence and will enjoy watching the bears fishing and playing. For 1 h and 30 min, we’ll use a mix of a motorboat and walking excursions with experienced local
wardens in order to maximise our chances of seeing bears up-close and observing different behaviours.
The bear viewing platform is located at the mouth of the many rivers that drain into the lake, providing awesome opportunities to take Nat Geo worthy photos of the bears fishing for migrating salmon.
After lunch, jump into the helicopter for a 15 min flight to Ksudach Volcano, where we land and Klyuchevskoye lake. We’ll take a short walking excursion along volcanic hot springs, which create a ‘hot beach’ on the lake’s shore. Our next stop - the banks of Goryachaya River, where we bathe in the thermal hot water springs – the largest in Kamchatka. The water bubbles out on to a section of tundra located just
under the Khodutka Volcano, forming a small stream. Further from the source, the water slowly cools, so bathers are able to find a location where the temperature is just right for a warm, soothing swim.
We board the MI-8 once more and set out for a 40-min flight back to the city. Approximate tour duration is 6-7 hours, you’ll be back to the hotel at about 5:30 pm.
Option 2: Scenic helicopter flight to the Valley of Geysers and Uzon Caldera. The Valley of Geysers is the only geyser field in Eurasia and the second largest concentration of geysers in the world. This cluster of around 90 geysers, fumaroles and hot springs in this valley were only discovered in 1941.
They lie above the marginal fractures of the oldest Uzon caldera and periodically expel hot water in spectacular jet streams.
The MI-8 helicopter will take you on a flight (about 1h 15min) over Karymskiy (active) volcano and Malyi Semyachik volcano with its spectacular acid crater lake, and finally will land in the valley.
The walking route (1h 30 min) goes along the wooden decking of the paths to the main observation points, from which you will see an eruption of the biggest geysers, look into the “Gates to hell”, enjoy the views of the pots with boiling red clay.
After that, the helicopter will take you to Uzon Caldera (5-10min flight). During the excursion (40-50min) you will walk along the Eastern thermal field to observe moon landscapes and volcanic activity. From here, you will fly (40 min) to the beautiful Nalychevo Valley where you will have lunch and a relaxing soak in natural thermal pools.
Don’t forget your swimmers!
Option 3: Cultural immersion in the ethnic tourist centre.
A village in an ethnic style introduces you to the culture of the native Kamchatka people (Koryaks, Itelmens and others). It is situated in an open area with a picturesque view of the volcanoes. Here the guests will have an excursion around the dog kennel and learn the history of the dog sledding sport in Kamchatka, listen to the stories about Kamchatka natives, watch
traditional dances and learn some of the dancing moves. You can also take pictures in traditional costumes, learn about the Kamchatka natives’ lifestyle and taste a hot fish soup (oukha).
Day 7 : Optional Dachnye Hot Springs Trekking Tour
Optional trekking tour around the Dachniye hot thermal springs at the base of the Mutnovskiy volcano.
This optional journey will include a visit to the serene Spokoiniy creek and waterfall.
This day can be spent at your leisure, or you may join the optional tour to Dachnye hot springs.
Breakfast at the hotel will be followed by a transfer to the Mutnovskaya geothermal power station. Sometimes referred to as “a miniature version of the Valley of Geysers”, the Dachniye hot thermal springs are situated at the bottom of the Mutnovsky volcano, at the edge of a huge intermountain area, situated within a ravine with steep walls. You also will be invited to take a warm bath in a naturally formed hot stream in a large basin of the springs.
The afternoon’s activities will include a picnic lunch during the trek and a visit to the Spokoiniy creek and waterfall.
