6 Nights / 7 Days
Adventure buffs, if you are looking for an exhilarating trekking experience then Kanamo Peak is just for you. Standing tall at 19,600ft, Kanamo Peak is one majestic mountain of the Spiti Valley that challenges the trekkers of their endurance, strength and patience. The trek starts from the world’s inhabited and third highest village, Kibber. Your journey will take you to old monasteries decorated with prayer flags, villages that have wonderful stories to share. The route to the arid desert mountain boasts of snow clad peaks, sparse vegetation that is bound to transport you to a whole new world. This trek definitely requires prior experience of high-altitude trekking and even experienced trekkers rate Kanamo as challenging. The high-altitude combined with the extremely dry weather in the area can be a dangerous combination, which can only be tackled with proper acclimatisation and physical fitness.
We drive for 8-9 hrs over Rohtang La and Kunzum La to Kaza. The road zig zags through the mountains and is full of curves and bends. We will gain attitude along with the constant turns, hence motion sickness solutions are advisable if you are prone to the sickness. En route, one can easily notice the drastic change in scenery within a matter of hours. The backdrop of your journey will change quickly from lush green mountains, hills and meadows to barren white deserts of Spithi. As you are awe at your surroundings, we will arrive at our destination.
Kibber situated at an altitude of 14,108 feet. Boarding here will be provided at a guest house in the village neighborhood. Zigzagging through the cold deserts you will reach the village by lunchtime. In fact, Kibber is a small village located in a valley and is considered as one of the highest inhabited villages in the world! Post lunch, you need to start your walk up the desert mountain. It is a rocky climb and you may take close to two hours to finish it. This is mostly called as the acclimatization walk as the next few days are going to be similar. Once you are back, you can explore Kibber.
The rest of the day could be spent exploring cultural sites in and around. The ancient Key Gompa is situated in Kaza. This is a beautiful ancient sight and looks absolutely stunning and is one of the most treasured moments of the Kanamo Peak trek. The Key Monastery is a medieval place of worship which sits on top of a hill in the Spiti region surrounded by a river. You can also speak to old monks, read ancient manuscripts and visit the prayer room. On some days, they also serve a delicious herbal tea made here. Return to homestay by evening.
On this day, we will begin the trek to the Kanamo Peak base camp. It is a constant ascent for about 7 hours which is mostly windy, has a lot of rocky slopes, desert mountains and lush green grasslands. This walk has it all! We will go higher by 1650 feet today. You will see many fields of green peas here and if it is the season of harvest the locals will also offer them to you. You will also come across two beautiful lakes which are a water resource for the residents of Kaza village. In the final two hours of your trek, you will see a unique variety of the flower ‘Bhrama Kamal’ and some other pretty flowers as well.
This day starts by 3 am and one needs to climb to the top of a 19000ft peak crossing 2 shoulders in the mountain. This is followed by an ascending trek to the ridge that will take you to the top. Based on the season, you might encounter little snow at the top which will require you to be extra careful.
When at the summit, delight in the great sights that include Parang La Pass that leads to Ladakh, Pin Parvati Pass that leads to Kullu Valley, Kinnaur ranges, Lahaul and Spiti and the stunning valleys. As per the weather, you can enjoy some moments taking in the beauty of its sights and environs after which you can start the back journey cautiously. When at the camp, celebrate your climb and set down your camps for the night.
Awaken to splendid views from the summit and after an appetizing breakfast, make your way back towards Kibber from where you will be driven for a short time to your Kaza hotel. Freshen up and the remaining part of the day can be spent in unravelling the place. After indulging in lunch, if you wish, you can engage in rafting along the Spiti River. Delight in the turbulent rapids as well as appreciate the gorgeous landscapes. The activity can be undertaken by beginner and also those who cannot swim. Wrap up your day with a celebratory dinner at the hotel and retire for the night.
With the completion of the day’s breakfast, pack your bags and wish adieu to the enchanting village of Kaza. Depart from the hotel and drive off to Manali after which you can continue onward journey. Mt Kanamo Peak trek ends.
