This exciting itinerary of ours takes us within a stone’s throw of the gigantic bulk of Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain on Sikkim-Nepal border. Beautiful landscapes of grassy meadows, rhododendron forests and rushing streams, breathtaking heights are the highlights of this region. We explore beautiful Gangtok and fascinating Darjeeling too.

This classic trek through the eastern Himalayas, journeys from Yuksom to Samiti Lake and onwards to the dizzy heights of Goecha La (4,940m), a high pass situated right beneath the towering massif of Kanchenjunga (8,586m). Setting out from Gangtok, the enchanting capital of Sikkim, we head to beautiful Yuksom and continue via Tshoka, Dzongri, Thangshing and the spectacular Samiti Lake to Goecha La. The trail passes through lush vegetation, rhododendron forests and remote villages. We camp in beautiful meadows surrounded by the magnificent panorama of the Himalayan peaks. Dzongri is situated at an altitude of about 4,020m in west Sikkim. It offers the trekker the most fascinating close-up views of Kanchenjunga and the neighboring Pandim. Goecha La is situated at an altitude of about 4,940m, the highest point of the route. The pass is strewn with prayer flags and offers a mind-blowing panorama of the mountains all around.

We finish our trek returning to Yuksom from where we drive onward to Darjeeling. We explore this beautiful hill town famous for its lush scenery and tea plantations from the days of British India.

Day wise Itinerary

• Day 1 : Delhi

  Arrive at Delhi. Transfer to the hotel for check in. Overnight Hotel

• Day 2 : Gangtok

  Delhi – Bagdogra (by plane) – Gangtok (124 km;3-4 hrs) Morning transfer to airport to catch flight to Bagdogra. Afternoon free to enjoy and appreciate nature around us. Overnight Hotel

• Day 3 : Gangtok

  Sightseeing in Gangtok Morning drive to Phodang and Labrang monasteries in Gangtok. Afternoon visit to Institute of Tibetology and a Tibetan handicrafts centre. Overnight Hotel

• Day 4 : Yuksom

  Gangtok – Yuksom (123km) (1770m;6-7 hrs) Morning visit to Rumtek Monastery and drive to the start point of trek at Yuksom (1,770m). Optional walk up to Dubdek/Dubdi Monastery in the evening. Overnight Camp

  • Hotspots : Rumtek Monastery

• Day 5 : Tsokha

  Yuksom – Tsokha (3050m;5-6 hrs) Walk through forests and rivers to Bakhim (2,790m). Continue walking to a fairly new Tibetan village of Tsokha (3,050m) to camp. Overnight Camp

• Day 6 : Dzongri

  Tsokha – Dzongri (4020m;5-6 hrs) Trek to Tsokha and continue to climb to Phedang (3650m). A steep climb from here brings to out of the forest from where we can enjoy views of peaks of Kanchenjunga range. Walk to Dzongri to camp overnight. Overnight Camp

• Day 7 : Dzongri

  Rest day for acclimatization at Dzongri Rest at 4,020m to acclimatize further. A climb to Dzongri Top provides views of all nearby peaks of Kabru, Rating, Kanchenjunga, Koktang and Pandim. Overnight Camp

• Day 8 : Thangsing

  Dzongri – Thangsing (3930m;4-5 hrs) Climb the ridge initially and pass herds of yak amongst the scrub, juniper and other plantation. Then a descent via Prek Chu into the mixed forest leads us to the next camp at Thangsing. Overnight Camp

• Day 9 : Samiti Lake

  TThangshing – Samiti Lake (4330m;3-4 hrs) Walk downhill to the next campsite through forests and along the glacier to the camp near the lake. In the process views of Thangshing , Khang and Pandim in addition to Kanchenjunga and Goecha peaks make our day. Overnight Camp

• Day 10 : Thangshing

  Samiti Lake – Goecha La – Thangshing (3800m;8-10 hrs) Climb steeply to Goecha La Pass (4,940m) flowed by a gradual descent to the next camp at Thangshing where we camp overnight. Overnight Camp

• Day 11 : Tsokha

  Thangshing – Tsokha (3050m;7-8 hrs) Descending the valley from Thangshing we take a direct route, missing out Dzongri by following a lower trail through dense rhododendron forest to reach Tsokha after a long trek. Overnight Camp

  • Themes : Hill Stations & Valleys

• Day 12 : Yuksom

  Tsokha – Yuksom (1770m;5-6 hrs) Today we trek back towards Yuksom, via Rathong Valley to conclude the trek, but not before we have walked down through the narrow Rathong Valley. Overnight Camp

  • Themes : Hill Stations & Valleys

• Day 13 : Darjeeling

  Yuksom – Darjeeling (135 km;5-6 hrs) Rejoin transport and drive back to Darjeeling. Afternoon free. Evening, optional visit to Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Tibetan Self Help Centre and some local monasteries. Overnight Hotel

  • Themes : Mountaineering

• Day 14 : Delhi

  Darjeeling – Bagdogra – Delhi (Flight) Morning transfer to Bagdogra via Ghoom Monastery, to catch flight back to Delhi. Transfer to hotel and rest of day free. Overnight Hotel

• Day 15 : Delhi

  Departure Departure transfer to Delhi airport.
