To provide the perfect introduction to Indian heritage and culture, this tour begins with a two-night stay in Delhi where sights such as Raj Ghat – Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial, spectacular Red Fort – built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan in the 17th century as a ceremonial and political centre of Mughal government, Jama Masjid – India’s biggest mosque also built around the same time, and the splendid India Gate - built as a memorial for 82,000 soldiers who died in the first World War. The following day we board a plane for Guwahati, the capital of Assam, in the northeast. Famous for its tea plantations this otherwise little-known region is home to Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the sub-continent’s premier destinations for wildlife enthusiasts. We spend three days here, taking a series of game drives including one on elephant back adding more thrill to the adventure, into the lush grassland looking for one-horned rhinos (Kaziranga is home to over two-thirds of the world’s population of rhinos) and tigers and other spectacular species.

A boat trip offers opportunities to spot rare Gangetic dolphins. Some 500km to the southwest in the vast swamps of the Ganges delta, Sunderbans National Park is densely covered by mangrove forests - a refuge for a significant population of Bengal Tigers. We travel into this remote water-world by boat and experience the wilderness to the full by spending two nights in a forest lodge.

Our trip concludes in the metropolis of Kolkata that is regarded as the country’s pre-eminent intellectual centre. We spend a day exploring this fascinating Bengali city, the second-largest in India, with visits to the mysterious Kali temple – built to worship Goddess Kali; and the gorgeous Victoria Memorial - a large marble building dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria, and now a museum.

Day wise Itinerary

• Day 1 : DELHI

  Upon arrival at the International airport of Delhi and the traditional 'Swagat' (Welcome) we transfer to the hotel for check-in. Rest of the day is free for local exploration. Overnight Hotel
• Day 2 : DELHI

  In the local sightseeing of Delhi we visit Jama Masjid, Raj Ghat – The Gandhi Memorial, India Gate, colonial buildings and the Red Fort in the Old and New Delhi areas. Overnight Hotel
• Day 3 : KAZIRANGA

  We take the morning flight to Guwahati followed by a road journey to Kaziranga National Park, the place where a large variety of wildlife is waiting to be seen by us. Overnight Hotel
• Day 4 : KAZIRANGA

  Today we have two game drives in the park; one in the morning and one in the late afternoon. Overnight Hotel
• Day 5 : KAZIRANGA

  This morning we enjoy an elephant-back safari in the park, and in the evening we go for another game drive into the park. Overnight Hotel

  Today is the day for a morning boat ride in the park; evening is left with free time for local exploration or relaxation in the green environment. Overnight Hotel
• Day 7 : KOLKATA

  This morning we get a transfer to Guwahati airport to catch our flight to Kolkata, the dream city. Overnight Hotel
• Day 8 : SUNDERBANS

  From the hotel in Kolkata we drive to the boat jetty from where we travel to Sunderbans National Park by boat only to get a different kind of an experience; our overnight stay is in a forest lodge. Overnight Cottage

  This morning we explore Sunderbans by boat looking for tigers and other wildlife plus an array of birdlife and dolphins who are a highlight here. Overnight Cottage

  This morning we take a return journey to Kolkata by boat and by road. We also visit Victoria Memorial and the Kali temple in the afternoon in our local sightseeing programme. Overnight Hotel
