We leave Mombasa early this morning and drive 3.5-hours to Tsavo National Park, travelling in a safari minibus with pop-up roof for game viewing and guaranteed window seat.
Following the route of the railway line built by the British in the late nineteenth century, the road passes through warehouses and workshops on the outskirts of Mombasa, climbing steadily and soon the vast plains of Tsavo become visible in the distance, with the rolling Taita Hills on the horizon.
At Buchuma Gate we enter Tsavo East National Park, the largest park in Kenya at over 7,000 square miles (nearly 12,000 sq. km) and named after the Tsavo River, which flows through it. Check into your lodge in this great wilderness area, which is divided into an eastern and western section and is one of the oldest and largest wildlife conservation areas in Kenya.
After lunch at your lodge, in the afternoon we set out on a game drive in search of a variety of plains game, predators and bird life - including lions, elephants, giraffe and zebras.
Departure time: 05.00 for south coast hotels - 06.30 for north coast hotels.
