This wonderful horse riding holiday is based in the famous Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya, in the heart of the abundant wildlife of the Great Rift Valley of East Africa. Spend a week riding from camp to camp, while viewing game on horseback, on foot and by vehicle. Suitable for competent riders only. All light aircraft flights, riding, game drives & meals included.

Day wise Itinerary

• Day 1 : Arrival

  You will be met at Nairobi Airport and transferred to your hotel in this bustling city.
  
  Check in and relax in your warm and friendly African surroundings.
• Day 2 : Nairobi

  You will be collected from your Nairobi hotel and transferred to your light aircraft flight to the Masai Mara, named after the Masai people and the Mara River that divides the park.
  
  Masai Mara National Park is famous for its exceptional population of game and the annual migration of zebra and wildebeest from the adjoining Serengeti National Park. This phenomenon occurs every year from July to October, when game migrates along a circular route from the plains of the Serengeti to the Masai Mara and back again in search of fresh pastures, followed by hungry predators - most notably lions and hyena.
  
  Your guide will meet you at Mara Shikar airstrip and drive to your first camp, set up on the banks of the Mara River adjacent to a teeming hippo pool. Lunch will be served and you will have a little time to relax before meeting your horses and setting off on an evening ride. We will ride and game drive from this camp today and you should see herds of zebra, topi, giraffe, wildebeest and gazelle, as well as some of the big five.

• Day 3 : Soit Olololol

  We leave camp this morning with a picnic lunch in our saddle bags and head south toward the park boundary. Here we meet the river again at one of the famous wildebeest crossings, which we hopefully ford (unless in complete flood).
  
  We head south west across the Mara Triangle, where we have our picnic lunch, before ascending the Soit Olololol escarpment to reach our camp in a forest glade overlooking the whole Mara ecosystem.
• Day 4 : Mara Triangle

  We ride south west along the top of the escarpment, enjoying glorious views to the east on excellent going for the horses. We hopefully see the beautiful Mrs Ross’ and Schalows Turaco as well as abundant plains game.
  
  We descend the escarpment on foot along a rocky cattle track and have a picnic lunch under some acacias at the foot of the escarpment. After lunch we ride back through the Mara Triangle at the foot of the escarpment, before ascending on a game trail. Many bachelor buffalo herds are a feature of the afternoon, as we return to our camp at Soit Olololol.
• Day 5 : Olare Orok Valley

  We descend the escarpment again today and ride across to the same wildebeest river crossing.
  
  This time we head in a westerly direction and descend into the enchanting Olare Orok Valley where we picnic by a stream, with opportunities to swim in some lovely pools. We reaching our camp in time for tea and there should be time to enjoy an evening game drive.
• Day 6 : Masai Mara Game Reserve

  A full day of exploring this glorious area on horseback, by foot and by 4x4 game viewing vehicle.
  
  We have the opportunity today to drive right into the Masai Mara Game Reserve, including an elaborate picnic. You should get excellent photo opportunities - with possible sightings of buffalo, elephant, lion and maybe even cheetah or leopard. Afterwards we return to our camp at Olare Orok.

• Day 7 : Olare Lamun

  Today and we break camp in good time, as this is the longest ride of our trip as we cover over 30 miles (50 kms).
  
  With lunch in our saddle bags, we head to our last camp in a grove of acacia trees by a small stream at the southern edge of the Loita Plains. Here we settle into our camp at Olare Lamun (the rhino salt lick)
• Day 8 : Olare Lamun

  A full day to further explore the remote area around Olare Lamun, with its abundant game.
  
  Game drives, rides and walks may be taken from camp.

• Day 9 : Mombasa

  Today transfer to the airstrip for your light aircraft flight to Wilson Airport and transfer to Nairobi International Airport for your onward flight.
  
  You will be met at Mombasa Airport and transferred along the coast to your beach resort.
  
  Check into your hotel situated on the shores of the sparkling Indian Ocean and relax in your warm tropical surroundings.
• Day 10 : Mombasa

  At leisure to relax and soak up the sun on the Indian Ocean beaches of the warm Mombasa coast.
  
  Enjoy the lush tropical gardens of coconut trees, fan-shaped travellers palms and the vibrant blooms of hibiscus, bougainvilleas and frangipani - as well the splendid coastline. Activities vary by resort but include water sport, scuba diving and deep sea fishing.
  
  Note: Please be aware that all beaches in Kenya are public, so expect to see local beach sellers.
• Day 11 : Mombasa

  At leisure to relax and soak up the sun on the Indian Ocean beaches of the warm Mombasa coast.
  
  Enjoy the lush tropical gardens of coconut trees, fan-shaped travellers palms and the vibrant blooms of hibiscus, bougainvilleas and frangipani - as well the splendid coastline. Activities vary by resort but include water sport, scuba diving and deep sea fishing.
  
  Note: Please be aware that all beaches in Kenya are public, so expect to see local beach sellers.
• Day 12 : Departure

  Transfer to Mombasa Airport for your flight home.
