Day 1 : Arrival
You will be met at Kilimanjaro Airport and transferred to Moshi - the gateway to Mount Kilimanjaro.
Towering over the plains of East Africa, Mount Kilmanjaro is a triple volcano and the tallest mountain in Africa. The oldest volcano is Shira, a collapsed caldera, whilst Mawenzi is middle aged & the young Kibo is still dormant. The highest point, Uhuru peak, is on Kibo at 19,340 feet (5,895 m). Mount Kilimanjaro National Park includes moors and highlands, the Shira Plateau, and the two peaks of Kibo (the summit) and Mawenzi. The area below the national park includes rain forests and a game reserve.
Check into your hotel in the small town of Moshi.
Day 2 : Moshi
At leisure to prepare and acclimatise at Moshi in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Day 3 : Keys Hotel
Report to the Keys Hotel registration desk between 10.00 and 17.00 today to collect your race number.
The balance of the day is free to relax, acclimatise and familiarise yourself with the route.
Day 4 : Kilimanjaro Marathon
Today rise early for your transfer to the start of the Kilimanjaro Marathon, which is a qualifying race for the Comrades ultra marathon in South Africa. A half marathon option is also available, as well as a 5 km fun run.
The race is run on tarmac roads under the watchful eye of Mount Kilimanjaro and completed between 08.30 and 11.50. The marathon route leaves Moshi stadium and heads down towards the town and along the main road to Dar-Es-Salaam for approximately 9 km. This section of the route is relatively flat with many well-wishers along the road. The route then turns back to Moshi and towards Mount Kilimanjaro, heading up a long steady ascent towards Mweka. The uphill climb is gradual but with the mountain towering above and the local villagers out to cheer you on, the time passes quickly. The last section is a fast downhill run back toward the stadium. Regular water tables, sponging points and the odd ‘shower’ keep the runners refreshed along the route.
A hospitality tent is provided at the finish of the race, with return transfer to your hotel.
NOTE: You are responsible for securing your own race entry.
Day 5 : Lake Manyara
This morning your driver/guide will collect you from your Moshi hotel and transfer you 4-hours to beautiful Lake Manyara, travelling in a safari minibus with pop-up roof for game viewing.
We pass through the picturesque villages of the Masai Steppe. At the town of Makuyuni we turn northwest and continue our journey up a scenic escarpment to our lodge perched on the edge of the Rift Valley, with stunning views over distant Lake Manyara.
In the afternoon enjoy a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park. This park has a large concentration of monkeys, as well as plains game such as giraffe, elephant, impala, dik dik and the rare tree-climbing lion. You should also see large pods of hippo congregate where rivers run into the lake.
Day 6 : Serengeti
Today we travel 3-hours from Ngorongoro to the great Serengeti, stopping along the way at Olduvai Gorge, where Louis and Mary Leakey famously discovered the remains of early man.
We continue to Serengeti National Park (meaning 'Endless Plains), a World Heritage site that hosts the largest overland wildlife migration in the world. Each October over 2 million wildebeest and accompanying wildlife travel over 500 miles, as they journey from the open plains of the Masai Mara and across the hills of the Serengeti to the southern plains. After calving in February, from April onwards the great migration starts once again as these millions of animals move northwards, crossing the treacherous Grumeti River in the western corridor in search of the sweet new grasses of the Mara. Check into your lodge in this magnificent wildlife area.
Day 7 : Serengeti National Park
Today is devoted to early morning and late afternoon game viewing in the great Serengeti National Park.
This vast conservation area, which is larger than Northern Ireland, lies between Lake Victoria in the west, Lake Eyasi in the south and the Great Rift Valley in the east. The landscape varies from open grass plains in the south, savanna with scatterred acacia trees in the centre, hilly wooded grasslands in the north and woodlands and clay pans in the west - with small rivers, lakes ands swamps scattered throughout.
With more than 70 large mammals and over 500 other animal species, including large prides of lions and great herds of wildebeest, zebras and gazelle, outstanding game viewing is guaranteed on a scale only seen in East Africa. Bird watching is also outstanding.
