Exciting journey awaits you on a road less traveled as you start from Kalka. You will drive over the foothills of Himalayas on the winding roads of Shimla amidst Pine forests and apple orchards experiencing a breath of fresh air till you reach Narkanda. Take appropriate breaks on the way and enjoy the beauty as you leave the city crowd behind. View the lush green valleys and apple orchards on both side of the road.
Day 2 : NARKANDA - SANGLA DISTANCE 160 km TIME 4.50 hrs HEIGHT 2650 m
Continuing on the windy roads, we descend to the Sutlej Valley near Rampur. The road meanders on the rock carved picturesque landscape of Kinnaur along the river banks over Indo-Tibet highway till you reach Karcham – the confluence of Sutlej and Baspa rivers, where a huge Dam is constructed for Hydro Electric Power generation.
We cross the Dam and continue along the banks of Baspa river to enter Sangla Valley – one of the most beautiful valleys of Himalayas. Sangla is one of the most beautiful valleys in India. We recommend a walk to Baspa river from your hotel.
Day 3 : IN SANGLA DISTANCE 45 km TIME 2.30 hrs HEIGHT 2650 m
After our breakfast, basking in the first rays of the sun, and later head towards Rakcham & Chitkul. We continue our trail into the valley of the Sutlej River, through breathtaking Himalayan scenery, to the charming village of Rakcham.
The rocky mountain slopes are home to traditional wooden stilt homes, surrounded by white fields of potato. The Sutlej flows along ferociously. Above it, on a rickety steel bridge, we walk across to the Baspa Valley, covered with fields of wild pink flowers.
The journey will take you to the last village of India before Tibet in this region – Chitkul. The blooms of wild rose during the summers and high mountains along the head of the valley is a treat for nature lovers.
Chitkul can be described as one of the most scenic settlements in the valley and the last inhabited village before the India-China border. This short drive from Sangla to Chitkul will be one of the most scenic drives you
’ll take with plenty of opportunities to take stunning photographs. Walk around the Bapsa river and pay tribute to the Mathi Goddess at the temple in the village.
Day 4 : SANGLA - NAKO DISTANCE 125 km TIME 3.20 hrs HEIGHT 3662 m
We leave Sangla to head into the high mountains. After downhill climb to the highway we continue upstream of Sutlej witnessing the dramatic change in the landscape with every mile that passes by. With mountains becoming barren you are getting ever closer to Spiti Valley.
See the confluence of Spiti and Sutlej river at Khab. We continue driving on the famous Hindustan – Tibet Highway or the NH 22 – This stretch is famously known as one of “most treacherous roads of the world” by the lonely planet in a visual spectacle.
After a quick refueling stop at Puh, we proceed to Nako – the last hamlet of Kinnaur, before we enter the gates of Spiti Valley. Nako is a lakeside village, one of India’s most remote and home to Nako monastery, an important monastery in Tibetan Buddhism.
A walk in Nako Village gives a glimpse of their lifestyle, culture and customs. Village still has traditionally made homes and modern world constants like soft drinks and ready snacks hasn’t arrived here. There is so little written about Nako that its sure to be the surprise package of the itinerary.
Day 5 : NAKO - TABO - KAZA DISTANCE 111 km TIME 3.30 hrs HEIGHT 3800 m
Tabo has a monastery 1021 years old which is also a UNESCO world heritage site. This ancient monastery is rich in Murals, Frescos and Paintings that tell the story of Buddhist pantheon. Often referred to as “Ajanta of Himalayas ”- The Tabo Monastery houses murals, thankas and paintings, believed to have been made in a night by the Gods themselves. You can also hike to the meditation caves, if time permits.
Enroute to KAZA, visit Dhankar Monastery- Seat of the King in ancient times- the most beautiful setting of a monument which hangs on a cliff and overlooks the confluence of Spiti and Pin River.
The Monastery, perched on the edge of a 300m cliff is a sight to behold and looks straight out of a movie set. An hour's trek (Optional) takes you to the beautiful Dhankar Lake situated above the Dhankar village is a great way to get introduced to High Himalayan Trekking.
There is an ancient stupa at the lakeside where visitors can pray and chant. And if you are lucky, you might even spot the elusive Himalayan Ibex. The lake also offers breathtaking views of Manirang Peak, the highest peak of Himachal Pradesh located on the border of Kinnaur and Spiti district. The shimmery lake with its calming effect provides perfect opportunities to photography lovers to capture the magical moments.
Day 6 : IN KAZA DISTANCE 85 km TIME 3.39 hrs HEIGHT 3800 m
This will be the day you have been awaiting as it takes us to many highlights and to those picture-perfect places, we have been seeing on social media.
The highest village in Asia, Komik, which literally translates to ‘eye of a snow cock’, is situated at a height of 4513 meters. This farming village has a population of 84 people, living in utter isolation, cutoff from the rest of the world for most parts of the year. This little hamlet ensures to bring you thousands of miles away from your familiar settings to a place of soft brown pastures and snow-white mountain peaks. Some of the common animals of the region are the Tibetan wolf, blue sheep, red fox, hare, snow cock, Himalayan griffin, rock pigeon etc.
Later, we drive to Hikkim where we visit the world’s highest post office in the world. If possible, you might even meet the post-master and hear his stories.
After sending out a postcard, we drive to Langza. Langza village is situated at an altitude of 4400 meters and belongs to the Sakyapa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Langza houses a population of 137 in 33 households. Once you are here, you can walk around the village and visit the ancient Lang (Temple) which is estimated to be around 1000 years old.
At Langza, walk back to the prehistoric era when Spiti was submerged by the Tethys Sea, as you explore a land very rich with fossils of Marine animals and plants which were here millions of years ago.
We drive back down to Kaza for lunch. After that, we visit the world famous Ki Monastery. The car will first stop at the base of the monastery hill for the ultimate photo opportunity of this remarkable structure. With over 1000 years ’ worth stories to tell, the Ki Monastery situated at a height of 13,668 feet was founded by a disciple of the famous Atisha, in the 11th century CE.
Belonging to the Yellow Hat or Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism, this monastery is famous as a prominent center of learning as well as a refuge for Tibetans. Being remotely located atop a hill overlooking endless plains, the Ki Monastery is an obvious choice for those seeking peace and calm.
Then we will move farther up the valley to the picturesque village of Kibber. Located at a height of 4205 meters and 18 km from Kaza, this formerly highest permanently inhabited village in this region, is also a popular base camp to embark on adventure and treks to adjoining mountains of high altitude. The expanses of beautiful landscapes and immeasurable beauty of the snow-tipped mountains make the place a haven for nature-lovers and photographers alike.
From Kibber you can trek to Chicham Village, located across a sharp and precipitous canyon traversible only by a suspended wire cable basket system known as a Jula. We drive higher up to the secluded village of Gette where we absorb stunning aerial views of Kaza and tie a prayer flag.
Day 7 : IN KAZA DISTANCE 103 km TIME 4.00 hrs HEIGHT 3800 m
Drive to Pin Valley – a tributary of the Spiti river, ‘Pin’ originates deep in the Trans Himalayan mountains leading to one of the ancient trade routes and popular trek of Bhaba Pass. Imagine a national park with an abundance of animals and birds, with some rare plant varieties, a river that gushes when it isn’t frozen and trekking opportunities for the adventure seekers.
The Pin Valley promises all this and more. It is also home to the magnificent Snow Leopard and several Trans Himalayan animals and rare birds protected under the National Parks of India. You’ll drive through this beautiful valley up to last village of Mudh.
We first visit the Kungri Monastery and then the beautiful hamlet of Mudh – the last motorable village of the Pin Valley. Declared a national park in 1987, Pin Valley has altitudes ranging from 11,000 to 20,000 feet and is home to at least 12 endangered snow leopards.
In addition, other animals indigenous to the region and park are the Siberian ibex, bharal, weasel, red fox and marten. Birds such as the pika, griffon, golden eagle, bearded vulture, chukor and raven paint the skies a pretty picture.
Day 8 : KAZA - CHANDRATAL DISTANCE 100 km TIME 3.50 hrs HEIGHT 4300m
Early in the morning, we drive to ChandraTal- The lake of the moon via Lohsar village and Kunzum Pass. The drive on this day will be one of the highlights of the trip. Have a cup of tea at the last village of Spiti valley- Lohsar. After this you will just get closer to the high mountains and all you will see is snow capped peaks from Kunzum Pass and beyond.
The hike to ChandraTal lake is 20 mins from the barricade. The lake is a mesmerizing sight that will leave you speechless for sure. We don’t have words to describe it. Spend the night at a camp close to the lake.
Day 9 : CHANDTRATAL - MANALI DISTANCE 112 km TIME 3.50 hrs HEIGHT 2050 m
Some people call it tough, some call it adventurous and some call the drive of their life- this is the last day of your trip before you head back to civilization in Manali. The road between Chandratal and Manali is the toughest, roughest, most scenic and we guarantee you will skip a few breaths this day. The non-existence of roads, a few water falls, dry and dusty make this terrain difficult. On the other hand, snow capped mountains, Chandra river flowing to meet Bhaga and the vast landscape make your drive memorable. You get to choose which route you take, either the newly opened Atal Tunnel or the mighty Rohtang Pass. One thing you need to keep in mind is that you need to cross the Atal Tunnel before 2pm today as the tunnel is shut between 2-3pm everyday for maintenance.
