Day 2 : Hazyview Elephant Sanctuary
This morning we recommend a visit to Hazyview Elephant Sanctuary to experience a very special close-up encounter with these gentle giants.
Afternoon is at leisure to relax at your lodge, or enjoy other optional activities on offer.
Day 3 : Kruger National Park
Today transfer 2.5-hours to the world famous Kruger National Park, where game-viewing opportunities should present themselves almost immediately in this vast 2-million hectare game sanctuary. Hopefully we will see several species of antelope, zebra, wildebeest and maybe even giraffe before we reach your luxury tented walking camp, built in pioneer style and overlooking a waterhole.
Walking Safaris offer the opportunity to study the smaller animals, insects and trees of the park – as well as outstanding bird watching, with over 500 different species. After an afternoon walking safari, enjoy a delicious dinner relaxing around the camp fire.
Note: You must arrive before 2 pm on a Sunday, Tuesday or Friday for your walking safari.
Day 4 : Kruger National Park
Explore on foot the vast Kruger National Park, which offers magnificent game viewing opportunities. Accompanied by two armed rangers, you have the unique opportunity to follow elephant and rhino trails on foot and observe game in their natural surroundings, a profoundly memorable experience.
Early morning and late afternoon open-top game drives are also available, to allow you to explore further afield.
Weather-permitting, there is the option of a Sleep-Out on an elevated wooden platform in a tree overlooking a water trough. Tucked into your sleeping bag on a mattress high above the ground, this will be a night to remember as you sleep with the sounds of the African night. First person to book the camp has the choice of whether to do a sleepout, and anyone else who books that night is required to participate.
Walking safaris require an average level of fitness and minimum age of 12 years. Wear walking shoes and neutral clothing (avoid black, white and bright colours). Pack a hat, sunglasses, sunblock, insect repellant, torch, binoculars, camera with extra batteries, rain jacket and warm sweater.
Day 5 : Kruger National Park
After breakfast transfer 1-hour to your safari camp, where you can relax by the swimming pool and enjoy some luxury after your walking safari.
In the afternoon enjoy a game drive in an open-top game viewing vehicle accompanied by a lodge ranger to search for large game including the Big Five - Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Leopard and Rhino. Later enjoy a delicious dinner in the outdoor boma in the atmosphere that only the African bushveld can provide.
Day 6 : Kruger National Park
Rise at dawn to take advantage of the best game viewing conditions of the day, as you enjoy a thrilling open-top game viewing drive into the world famous Kruger National Park.
Explore the famous Kruger National Park, a vast 2-million hectare game sanctuary the size of Wales which offer magnificent game viewing opportunities and the highest concentration of lion in the whole of Africa. Hope to see several of the Big Five today - Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Leopard and Rhino - as well as many other species before returning to your lodge for breakfast.
The rest of the morning is free to relax by the swimming pool or enjoy bird watching at the lodge, before setting out again in the late afternoon for another game drive. With nearly 150 different species of mammals and over 100 species of reptiles in the Kruger National Park, you can hope to see cheetah, giraffe, hippo, kudu, crocodiles, sable antelope, waterbuck, warthogs, baboons, wild dogs and many other interesting animals. With over 500 different bird species including eagles, kingfishers, vultures and storks, outstanding bird watching is also guaranteed.
After a beautiful African sunset, enjoy the balmy evening and pristine stars of the Milky Way as you have never seen them before – as well as the spectacular Southern Cross.
Day 7 : Table Mountain
Time permitting enjoy some final early morning game viewing, before your 3-hour transfer to Mpumulanga Airport for your onward flight.
You will be met at Cape Town Airport and transferred to your hotel in this beautiful city, within sight of Table Mountain.
Check in and relax in your magnificent surroundings.
Day 8 : Cape Town
Today is free for independent sightseeing in Cape Town.
We recommend you purchase a day pass onboard the convenient Hop-Off Bus, which stops at all Cape Town’s key sights and beaches. The "Red Route" bus stops at the Table Mountain base station, where you can buy a ticket to ascend by cable car and enjoy one of the world’s most famous views. Continue to Camps Bay beach and the many attractions of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.
Day 9 : Table Mountain
Weather permitting, today enjoy a guided hike up Table Mountain, with spectacular views of the city below. Marvel at the pristine beauty of this mountain, whilst enjoying on foot one of the world’s most famous views.
You have a choice of two hikes:
- Platteklip Gorge (easier route) is a 2 to 2.5-hour hike up the mountain, with lots of steps; or
- Kasteel Poort from the Camps Bay side (intermediate), a longer 4 to 4.5-hours hike that zig-zags up the mountain and requires moderate to good fitness.
There is a time to explore the top of the mountain, with lunch at the restaurant (own account), before returning by cable car and being dropped off at your hotel.
Note: A reasonable level of fitness is required for these mountain hikes. Remember to bring good walking shoes, a light jacket suitable for changeable mountain conditions, 2 litres of water, sunscreen, sunglasses & hat.
Day 10 : Hout Bay
Today we recommend an optional full day tour to the beautiful Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, where you may see baboons, ostrich and perhaps even dolphins or whales in season (July/November).
Your tour travels through Hout Bay and along spectacular Chapman’s Peak Drive to the Cape Point peninsula, returning via Simons Town, Fish Hoek, Constantia and Kirstenbosch Gardens. This is a scenic tour of the whole Cape Peninsula, with the optional opportunity of visiting the penguin colony at Boulders Beach.
Day 11 : Cape Town
At leisure to relax and explore the 'Mother City' of Cape Town.
Many optional activities are available in this beautiful city. You can visit Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned (advance booking essential in season), Kirstenbosch Gardens and the vibrant Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.
Golf and deep sea game fishing are available, or you can or simply relax on Camps Bay beach – the choice is yours.
Day 12 : Stellenbosch Winelands
Today we drive 1-hour to the Stellenbosch Winelands. Here enjoy a guided hike along the 4-hour Waterfall Trail at Jonkershoek, with stunning views of mountains and vineyards (picnic lunch included).
We do not recommend the longer and much more strenuous Panorama Trail, as it contains a section on a loose rocky skree slope that is dangerous. Afterwards we stop at a wine estate for a wine tasting, before returning to Cape Town.
Day 13 : Departure
Transfer to Cape Town Airport for your flight home.
