Day 1 : Drive from Haridwar - Joshimath (6300ft)
Arrive at Haridwar in the morning, you will be picked up at the railway station and the journey begins from here to Joshimath. We get to traverse through the picturesque valley of Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnapraya – part of the Panch Prayag of Uttarakhand. Beyond this confluence, the river is known as Ganges. We shall have breakfast and lunch on the way at the local dhabas. What better way to taste the local cuisine! We will arrive at Joshimath by evening, upon arrival we spend the night in a guest house.
Day 2 : Joshimath - Dhak Village - Chitrakantha (9600ft)
Relish a scrumptious breakfast at your lodgings and then drive to the village of Dhak. Begin your Kuari Pass trek after you arrive in Dhak village, which is approximately 12 km from Joshimath. You first encounter a steep climb through forests of oak, rhododendron and hemlock. After climbing a steep hill, the valley slowly transforms into an overhanging cliff which shelters a local deity and the terrain changes from green pastures with trees to a drier terrain. The trek continues to climb to the village of Tugasi village where we shall have our pack lunch enroute. We finally trek our way to Chitrakhantha, have dinner & overnight camping.
Day 3 : Chitrakantha - Tali Top (11070ft)
We will start our day early with a few stretching exercises in the morning followed by breakfast. After this our trek leader will brief us about today’s trek schedule. Today we will trek for around 6 kms to Tali Top through green vegetation and red rhododendron flowers which turn red during the blooming season in April & May. Climb up through the forested ridge of Rhododendron, Spruce and Silver Birch above Chitra Kantha. It takes around an hour to reach a prominent ridge top and a further 30 minutes around to an open meadow where it meets the well-defined track from a place called Tapovan. We will camp at the alpine meadow at the end of Tali top.
Day 4 : Tali Top - Kuari Pass (12760ft) Via Khullara
We will start early as this is the longest day on the Kuari Pass Trek. First leg of today’s trek is a gradual ascend till Khullara top and from there traversing through the snow patch we reach Kuari Top. At Kuari Pass top winds will gush past you. Savour the unending vistas of great Himalayan peaks including the famous Nanda Devi. Nanda Devi (7816m) is the highest peak completely within India. It is surrounded by a huge circle of mountain walls with only one outlet, where the Rishi Ganga forges a route through deep, almost impenetrable gorges before flowing into the Alaknanda River. Given these natural defenses, it was not until 1934 that the first mountaineers were finally able to reach the base of Nanda Devi. Return to Tali Top through the same route and enjoy camp bonfire and sumptuous dinner at Tali campsite.
Day 5 : Tali Top - Joshimath Via Auli(9680ft)
After the tryst with snow-capped mountains, today we head back to where we had all started. Continue on this trail. After about an hour of moderate ascent, the overhanging trail ends abruptly at Gorson Bugyal. At Gorson Bugyal, the trail turns sharply to the left. Wide mountain views open up to the right and behind you. This is a lovely, descending walk. In 2-2.5 hours you will reach Padiyar. From Padiyar temple, the trail continues to descend. Upper Auli, which is the end of the ski lift , appears in 10-15 minutes. Once you you reach Auli, we will head back to Joshimath.
Day 6 : Joshimath - Haridwar
Today will be the last day in the Himalayas! With a heavy heart we bid a goodbye to the Himalayas. After breakfast we shall depart for an early morning drive towards Haridwar. Arrive at Haridwar by evening and say goodbye to your trek mates. Kuari Pass trek ends here.
