If you feel it’s time to get native, join one of the Kubirri Warra brothers on their beach, mudflat and mangrove cultural walk. Linc and or Brandon Walker follow the traditions of their ancestors who, for thousands of years educated visitors about their Kuku Yalanji culture.
Cooya Beach (Kuyu Kuyu) located 20 minute drive north of Port Douglas is a special place and is a traditional fishing ground of the Kuku Yalanji Bama. This unique coastal place has three diverse ecosystems – beach, mangroves and coastal reef – that are connected to each other by the ever changing mudflats and tidal lagoons.Today the brothers teach their guests how to throw a spear, hunt whilst stalking and observing wildlife and country, and how to track coastal resources. They share some of their extensive knowledge of this special area and how they care for their country.
On this 2 hour coastal and cultural walk you will be introduced to traditional fishing and gathering techniques with the aim of finding your own tucker (food). Your catch may include crabs, mussels and fish which are cooked up for everyone to taste and share with homemade damper on the balcony of the family home.
