Day 1 : Delhi - Srinagar
Upon arrival you will be transferred to your hotel from the airport and the first day in Leh is always utilized for acclimatization to the high altitude. Spend the day relaxing at your hotel.
In the evening stroll in the streets of Leh town
The pleasures of Leh are not confined to the visiting of monuments and sites. For locals and visitors alike, a stroll along the main bazaar, observing the varied crowd and looking into the curio shops is an engaging experience. A particularly attractive sight is the line of women from nearby villages sitting along the edge of the footpath with baskets of fresh vegetables brought for sale. Behind the main bazaar, Chang Gali is less bustling but has interesting little shops selling curios and jewellery. Further are the labyrinthine alleyways and piled-up houses of the old town, clustering around the foot of the palace hill. In the other direction, down the bazaar, are the Tibetan markets where one can bargain for pearls, turquoise, coral, lapis lazuli and many other kinds of semi-precious stones and jewellery, as well as carved yak-horn boxes, quaint brass locks, china or metal bowls, or any of a whole array of curios. When tired of strolling, one can step into any of several restaurants, some of them located in gardens or on the sidewalks and serve local, Tibetan, Indian and Continental cuisine.
Afternoon you will set out to a day of discovering the forbidden land. sightseeing of the historic monasteries visiting The Hemis, The Thiksey and Shey monastries.
Hemis Monastery: Hemis Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Drukpa Lineage, located in Hemis, Ladakh. Situated 45 km from Leh, the monastery was re-established in 1672 by the Ladakhi king Sengge Namgyal.
Thikse Monastery: Thikse Gompa or Thikse Monastery (also transliterated from Ladakhi as Tikse, Tiksey or Thiksey) (thiksok Nambar tak pe ling) is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Yellow Hat (Gelugpa) sect, located on top of a hill, approximately 19 kilometres east of Leh[1] in Ladakh, India. It is noted for its resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet and is the largest gompa in central Ladakh
Shey Monastery: The Shey Monastery or Gompa and the Shey Palace complex are structures located on a hillock in Shey,15 kilometres to the south of Leh in Ladakh, northern India on the Leh-Manali road. Shey was the summer capital of Ladakh in the past.
Evening will be free for a stroll again. Overnight stay in Hotel.
Day 2 : Leh - Achi - Lamayuru - Leh
After breakfast day trip to Alchi & Lamayuru. Enroute viist Gurudwara Pathar Sahib.
LAMAYURU GOMPA: The oldest holy site in Ladakh, it was a bon shrine prior to the advent of Buddhism. Also known as Yung Drung (Swastika) it is sited on a high promontory overlooking the village and valley. For sheer spectacle value no other Gompa can match Lamayuru.
ALCHI GOMPA: 70 Kms from Leh, on the banks of the Indus, is the Alchi Gompa dating a thousand years back. One of its walls features thousands of miniature sized pictures of the Buddha. Three large sized images made of clay and painted brightly are its focal attractions. No longer an active religious center, it is looked after by monks from the Liker monastery. This is the only monastery amongst 34 monasteries, which is not located on a hilltop.
Evening back to Leh. Overnight stay at Hotel.
Day 3 : Leh - Khardungla Pass - Leh
Just under 40 kms north of Leh by road (and a mere 15 kms as the crow flies) on the way to the Nubra Valley is the Khardung La, the world's highest road pass at 18,380 ft (5,602 m). It's a doable half-day ride from Leh if you're adapted to altitude, working out as basically 24 miles or so of straight up followed by the same descent, with about 7,000 ft (2,150 m) climbing included.
The ride itself is quite good, providing good views (excellent photo-ops) towards Leh, and at the top one can see the Karakorum range to the north of the pass, and then by turning 180 degrees see the Himalayas back towards Leh. (The actual area at the top of the pass itself is nothing to write home about, being just a collection of a few corrugated iron huts, together with the ubiquitous road-builders and soldiers hanging about, but one can have a picture taken like the one here and show it off for the rest of your lives!)
Afternoon back to Leh & rest of the day at leisure. on own. Overnight stay at Hotel.
Day 4 : Leh - Khardungla Pass - Leh
Leave early morning at 5 AM to Pangong Lake through Changla pass 5486 Mtrs. Pangong Tso, Tibetan for "long, narrow, enchanted lake", also referred to as Pangong Lake, is an endorheic lake in the Himalayas situated at a height of about 4,350 m. It is 134 km long and extends from India to Tibet. While ascending Changla pass 5486 Mtrs. Enjoy the beautiful panoramic view of the villages below the pass. Arrive Durbuk and from there a short drive takes you to the western shore of the lake. Enjoy the landscape in the back drop of the Lake. This famous blue brackish Lake of Pangong is 5/6 Kms wide and over 144 Kms long with half of its running the other side of the INDO CHINA BORDER.
One rarely feels so close to nature and environment and the scenery is unforgettable. In the late afternoon drive back to Leh. Overnight stay at Hotel.
