TREKKING PRECACAUTIONS
Certain precautions are necessary while trekking in wilderness of ladakh. As mentioned earlier, there is almost no immediate rescue operation unless somebody gets to leh in the first place. Acclimatization is of utmost importance and the trek routes you choose will depend on your body’s ability of physical endurance. Choose your tour operator wisely and understand the route and the probable risk involved, if any.
ON ROUTE PRECAUTIONS
1. Follow a comfortable rate of ascent and walk at your own speed, not your fellow’s or guide’s.
2. Try to start your day early to avoid the intense non - heat as for most of the time you are less likely to get any shade enroute.
3. The altitude you sleep at is more important than how high you climb during the day. Therefore, remember ‘sleep low - climb high’. However high you may climb during the day, your night should not be higher by more than 300m than your previous night.
4. Although there is little rainfall, but in early or late seasons mild snowfall or rain may cause landslides at some prone areas, so watchout.
5. Occasionally, the trek might involve stream crossing. Most of these are easy one, but if current is strong or water is deep, wait. Since most of the streams are snowfed, the water flow will be at their lowest in early morning. Spot a wide and shallow area to across. Avoid crossing the stream bare foot. Mightier river should be crossed with security ropes or crossing in groups holding each other with arms. Carrying a stick would also help in shallow water.
OTHER PRECAUTIONS
1. Use only boiled or well cooked food.
2. Loosing appetite at high altitude is normal, but be careful. This may be an early sign of AMS.
3. Stream are generally clean, but may have been polluted upstream, by animals if not humans. Springs are best available source of natural water while trekking.
4. Avoid eating uncooked vegetables like salads as they have higher risk of being contaminated.
5. If there is any sign of AMS, do not ascend further. If problem persists go to lower altitude. You may start your ascend again as soon as the symptoms disappear.
6. Dehydration is common threat during trekking. Make sure to take sufficient fluid to remain healthy. Some trek rutes are particularly water scare, so take abundant back ups. You may carry some rehydration salts as well to on safer side.
7. Dry air of Ladakh often causes ore throat and a dry cough, you are therefore advised to carry suitable medicine.
8. Bedbug, lice, fleas and ticks may pose problem, particularly if you are staying in remote house.Train Fares
