Luang Prabang – Biking To Pak Ou Caves Tour

Package Overview

This is a great private bike up to the Pak Ou Caves. Cycle along dirt road and see the countryside along the way with several stops at villages renowned for their handicrafts. The caves are a great ending point followed by a boat ride back to Luang Prabang.

FULL ITINERARY

Meet with your private guide at your hotel and start the day by starting cycling to the suburb. The distance from Luang Prabang to Pak Ou Caves is 30km and the cycling time is approximately 2 hours.

You then head up the north road number 13 to explore the beautiful country side and reach to Ban Xang Hai village which has for centuries made the clay jars and used to ferment Lao wine. Nowadays the tradition still continues, however today the village now specializes in producing a wide range of ‘Lau Lao’ the Lao whisky and ‘Lau Hai’ Lao wine. After the visit, you continue to cycle on a dirt road approximately for 45 minutes to Ban Pak Ou where your lunch is prepared in local restaurant.

After lunch, you’ll cross the Mekong River to visit the famous Buddha Caves which sit amongst the limestone cliffs where the Mekong and Nam Ou rivers meet. The caves are spilt in two, one named Tham Ting and the other Tham Theung. They are both filled with thousands of Buddha images and statues which have been deposited here over centuries. Pak Ou remains a popular pilgrimage site for Lao people, especially during the Lao New Year in April when the caves become crowded with pilgrims who gain merit by ceremonially washing the Buddha statues.

After the visit you’ll drop our bicycles in the boat and head down the mighty Mekong towards Luang Prabang. During the trip you will enjoy the beautiful scenery along the river. If time allows, a stop is made on our way to visit Ban San Xang Khong village to see expert of mulberry paper making. You then bike back to your hotel in Luang Prabang at approximately 4:30pm
