Explore Morocco with our Morocco private tours to M’hamid and Erg Chigaga
Day 1 : Marrakech to Ouarzazate
We’ll pick you up at 8 a.m. from your hotel or riad in Marrakech and begin our journey across the High Atlas Mountains. After reaching and driving through the Tichka pass, you’ll leave the main road and head towards the Telouet Kasbah. This beautiful kasbah belonged to the Glaoui family, also known as the “Lords of the Atlas”. From here we continue to Ait Benhaddou where we stop for lunch. This is the most famous kasbah in Morocco and is a UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to its stunning architecture that’s built over the top of a hill. You’ll be able to get some fantastic views and photos of the surrounding landscape here. Once we’re done, we then continue to Ouarzazate to visit the cinema studios before heading back to the riad for the night.
Day 2 : Ouarzazate to M’hamid
After breakfast, the trip continues to Agdz, where we stop to visit Kasbah Tamnougalt, the oldest kasbah in the Draa Valley, before taking the ancient caravan road between the river and the mountains. On the way, we’ll go through many villages and gardens so that you can get a better idea of the way of life along the oases. Once in Zagora, we’ll stop for lunch in a stunningly beautiful kasbah. In the afternoon we drive to Tamgroute where we stop and visit the manufacturer of green pottery, then to M’hamid, the end of road. Going off road, we then drive to the desert camp in the middle of the high dunes to enjoy an unforgettable sunset and to spend the night under the stars in a nomad tent.
Day 3 : M’hamid to Chigaga
After breakfast, we jump on the back of some camels and take a 2 hour ride toward M’hamid, visiting the old village across the now frequently dry river Draa. After lunch in the M’hamid village we depart for the Erg Chigaga dunes with 60 km of off-road driving. This route features many different sizes and types of the desert. These dunes are far away from civilization and from any kind of pollution or noise. The dunes stretch out toward the horizon and the ocean of sand is an incredible sight. Once we’re done, we’ll then head back for dinner and a good night’s sleep in a bivouac of nomad tents.
Day 4 : Chigaga to Marrakech
After breakfast, the road takes us through another 90 km of desert with a variety of panoramic views including Lake Iriqui, the surrounding mountains, and we’ll take some time to look for fossils. We then head toward Foum Zguid, the first village after the desert, and then to Tazenakht, famous for its Berber carpets and rugs, where we’ll stop to have lunch. From there we head back across the High Atlas Mountains to reach Marrakech before dark where we’ll drop you off at your riad or hotel.
