The Markha Valley is named after a tributary of the Zanskar that flows somewhere between the Stok and Zanskar mountain ranges. Although very remote, it is perhaps the most popular trekking trail in Ladakh, despite the serious challenges that it offers.
The trek is, therefore, not meant for those who are looking to have a sweet time in the hills, with all the luxuries of urban existence a few hours away. This trek is a serious pursuit of the stark beauty of Ladakh and the views compensate for all the hardships that one bears whilst camping along this high altitude cold desert.
Day 1 : Delhi - Leh (3520 meters)
Delhi-Leh (3520 meters). Early in the morning take a flight from Domestic Airport to reach Leh. The spectacular one-hour flight over the mighty Himalayas brings you to Leh, capital of the ancient Buddhist kingdom called Ladakh. Arrives & transfer to Ladakhi style traditional hotel. A day of rest to acclimatize. Later in the afternoon visit the local market. Overnight stay in the hotel.
Day 2 : Nalanda and Rajgir Stupas
Leh: After breakfast, Full day sightseeing visit Shankar monastery, which contains a plethora of impressive images, wall paintings and a huge statute of Avaloketesvara – with 1000 arms and heads. Shanti Stupa crowned with a massive dome, this stupa is a reminiscent of Nalanda and Rajgir stupas. Visit Tsemo castle and Leh Palace, The palace was strategically built on the hilltop in the 18th century and offers fabulous views of the Indus valley below. After lunch visit Stok monastery and Museum. Rest of the time free for visit colorful market at Leh.
Day 3 : Leh - Alchi - Phyang
Leh-Alchi-Phyang & Likir: After breakfast, leave for a full day sightseeing to Alchi Phyang, & Likir monasteries. The road goes via Nimmu, the meeting point of the Indus and Zanskar rivers. The Gompa at Alchi is renowned for its massive Buddha statues, lavish woodcarvings and houses the only example of Kashmiri-style wall paintings in the area. There are also many chortens around the village. On the way back to Leh visit Likir monastery with the huge statue of God Buddha, continue drive to Phyang, visit the monastery, inside Phyang monastery there is a museum where you can see the 8th century Thankas and another Buddhist relics, on arrival at Leh, free time in the market. Overnight at hotel.
Day 4 : Leh - Stok
Leh-Stok: Morning departure by jeep to the village of Stok, which lies immediately south of Leh, on the opposite side of the Indus valley. Stok is home to a royal palace and a small museum, which contains religious artifacts and ceremonial clothing belonging to the royal family. After visiting the palace and museum we set up camp just above the village. Dinner and overnight in tents.
Day 5 : Stok - Rumbak (3650m)
Stok-Rumbak (3650m) 6 -7 hrs. trek. After an early breakfast, we make the long steep ascent to Stok-La (4900 m). From the top you will have beautiful views of the Zanskar and KaraKoram ranges. As this is our first major trekking day and is quite strenuous, The challenging day’s walk is rewarded by the amazing rock formations on the approach to the pass and also by the stunning views of the Indus Valley and distant mountain ranges from the top of Stok La. From Stok La, we descend into the picturesque and agriculturally rich valley of Rumba, with its beautifully decorated houses, monasteries and schools. Camp overnight in tents.
Day 6 : Rumbak
Rumbak-Base of Gonda-la (4450m)5-6 hrs. trek. After breakfast start trek toward to Gonda-La. The rail to Shingo goes via Yurutse through the some houses and wheat field, this are is know for marmot and rabbits, set the tent just beneath the Gonda-la pass for overnight.
Day 7 : Gonda - La - Over Pass (4915m)
Base of Gonda-La-Over Pass (4915m)-Shingo-Skiu (3750m) 6-7 hrs. trek. A fairly ascending till the pass from you will see again just behind you, Nubra and Karakoram range, first part is gradually ascending till the top later easy descending till the Singo village, from there we follow a narrow gorge with trees, if the weather is clear it is little bit hot. Set the tent at Skiu village for overnight. This is the ideal camping site just near by the Markha chu.
Day 8 : Skiu - Markha Village (3625m)
Skiu-Markha Village (3625m) 6-7 hrs trek . Early in the morning trek to Markha, crossing back and forward over the Markha Stream, to the Markha village (3625 m). There are bridges at many of the more difficult crossing places. The lush vegetation along the riverside is in stark contrast to the dry and barren upper valley slopes. Overnight in tents. Rest of the time visit village and monastery.
Day 9 : Markha - Hankar - Thachunche (4100 m)
Markha-Hankar-Thachunche (4100 m). After breakfast continue trek to Hankar along with the Markha river, en route crossing several village, Hankar is the biggest village after Markah. From there we will take left turn to goes to Thachunceh gradually ascending till the camping site. Overnight at tent.
Day 10 : Thachunche - Nimaling (4500m)
Thachunche–Nimaling (4500m) 5-6 hrs. After breakfast gradually ascending towards to a small lake, from there two way one right side lead to base of Kang Yatse peaks (6400m) straight to Nimaling grassland, on arrival at Nimaling set the tent and take tea , coffee, biscuits etc. rest of the time take photo of nomadic people and Yak, Dzo, sheeps etc. overnight at tent.
Day 11 : Nimaling
Nimaling-Kongmaru La-Chuminakpo-Sang Sumdo (3700m) 7-8 hrs. Early morning trek to Kongmaru-La (5100 m). The trail from the pass offers fabulous views to the north of the hills of eastern Karakoram and China. On our way down, we walk along a narrow gorge and by afternoon arrive in Chuminakpo one hot water spring, continue trek to Sang Sumdo en rouge through the village, follow the stream that one came from the Kongmaru la. Set the tent at Sangsumdo for overnight.
Day 12 : Sangsumdo
Sangsumdo-Hemis-Leh. Continuing our descent, follow a motor-able road, Along the way we pass through the village of Martsylang, before arriving in Hemis for lunchtime. Take the jeeps to visit Hemis monastery, visit the monastery than drive to Leh. On arrival check in hotel rest of the time for relax.
Day 13 : Leh
Leh-visit to local home .Full day leisure for relax and shopping etc. we will provide dinner in the local house, visit a Ladakhi Buddhist family and share a cup of butter tea, tsampa (roasted barley) and tschang (fermented barely beer), Momoc, Thukpa, and local wine called “Chhang” drive back to hotel for overnight
Day 14 : Checkout
Checkout . Take Leh – Delhi flight, for homeward journey
