Ladakh is a haven for adventure enthusiasts wanting to indulge in trekking amidst the mighty Himalayas. A rather sought-after trek in the Ladakh region, the Markha Valley trek route does not disappoint anyone! It spills the chance to ascend the top of two very high passes, Gandala La (4800 m) & Kongmaru La (5150 m) and lets you feast your eyes on stunning sights from the summit. You also come across the charming Markha Village that is a trove in this cold semi-arid terrain of Ladakh.
Initial two days of the trekking will be spent for acclimatization as it is vital for a healthy trip ahead. In the meanwhile unravel monasteries, museum, fort, the local market place and Leh Palace. Cross over Ganda La (4800 m) and arrive at the winsome Markha Village that is laced with green fields and willow trees and has barren mountains in the backdrop. Other thrills include camping beside a gurgling stream, getting the stunning view of Kangyatze Peak and more. Till the final day, there is something to revel in every step of the way.
Day 1 : Arrival at Leh
Pick up from Leh Airport and transfer to hotel. Complete rest for acclimatization is must for rest of the day to avoid high altitude sickness. You will feel the elevation as it's a big jump from sea-level to 3500 meters, and it will take your body a few days to adjust to this altitude. It's very important to drink plenty of water, and to not over-exert yourself while wandering around Leh. Even walking up the stairs of the hotel will make you breathless for the first day or two. Overnight stay at Leh.
Day 2 : Leh Monastaries
After breakfast, full day excursion to various Monastaries/Gompas in and around Leh. Visit Thiksey Monastry (19 Kms) and from there drive to Shey Monastry, Stok Palace and museum. This day will help you acclimatization to the place further. Overnight stay at Leh.
Day 3 : Leh - Zingchen (3400m) - Yurutse (4150m) (Trek/4hrs)
After breakfast, drive from Leh to the Spituk Bridge that is behind the Spituk monastery (7 kms). From the bridge start trekking along river Indus while walking through the Stok mountains. This is where your hike of short stage and moderate gradient begins. Slowly move towards the wilderness of the Himalayas, leaving the site of the Leh-Srinagar highway. You arrive at Zingchen through a gorge. Further you enjoy the path through Rumbak Village to reach Yurutse. You will come across several stream crossings. Set up a camp after passing the village. O/N stay at camp
Day 4 : Yurutse (4150m) - Ganda La (4800m) - Skiu (3400m) (Trek 7/8hrs)
After breakfast, in the initial stretch of the trek, ascend to Ganda La (4900 m). walk through a steep climb and strong winds towards the latter half. Enjoy the breathtaking view on both sides, Zanskar range and some distant summits of the Himalayan range. Start descending to Shingo Village, after which, the trail makes its way into a narrow gorge which leads towards Skiu. Here rivers coming from Markha Valley and Shingo confluence. Night halt in tents.
Day 5 : Skiu (3400m) - Markha (3800m (Trek 6/7hrs)
Morning get ready for a long and moderate hike till the charming Markha Village. You will cross several streams along the way. Reach the hamlet that is a trove in the middle of this cold and arid desert. The place is laced with green fields, willow trees and a deserted palace. Camp beside a gurgling stream.
Day 6 : Markha (3800m) – Thochuntse (4150m, Trek /4-5hrs)
After breakfast, start trekking to reach Thochuntse through Hankar village. Take in the stunning view of Kangyatze Peak (6400m) when walking towards Hankar. Night halt in the tents.
Day 7 : Thochuntse (4150m) - Nimaling (4700 m) (Trek/ 4hrs)
After breakfast, you begin your trek journey to reach Nimaling (4900m). The place is a beguiling one with wide open valley with unbridled grazing grounds, and the backdrop of Kangyatze Peak.There is constant wind blowing in the area making situation slightly uncomfortable. Here to the south you can see Kang Yatse (Nimaling Peak) (6400m). O/N at camps
Day 8 : Nimaling (4700m) - Kongmaru La (5150m) - Sumdo (3800m) - Leh 3500m (Trek 7hrs) (Drive 2hrs)
After an early breakfast and trek a steep climb to reach the top of the highest pass on the trail - Kongmaru La (5200m). You can have a sight of Nun Kun in the West and Saser Kangri to the North. Enjoy the moments before climbing down to Sukarmo, from where your trail is a flat walk along the river till you come to the road head at Sumdo. Your rek ends here. Take a drive back to Leh. O/N stay at Hotel at Leh
Day 9 : Departure from Leh
After breakfast, check out from the hotel & drop at Leh Airport for return journey with sweet memories of Ladakh Tour.
