The Markha trek goes alongside a river called Markha, a tributary of the Zankskar. This river is surrounded by big, rocky mountains which give shape to the valley. Along the valley, there are numerous Tibetan settlements that have turned into small villages, made of mud-brick houses, and Buddhist gompas. For centuries, this region was totally isolated from modern society, until it was discovered in the 19th century. Today, Tibetans from Markha Valley make a living from the few trekkers that pass by during the summer months. Lying amidst the glamorous mountain passes of the Himalayas; the Stok Kangri Trek is a sensational yet challenging expedition. Positioned at an astounding height of 6153 meters, it is the highest in the Stok range of the Himalayas. The elevation of this majestic peak covers about 70% of the height of the Everest, making it perplexing and fairly strenuous. On this trek streams, glaciers, moraines, grasslands and snow-capped mountains will leave you absolutely bewitched.

Day wise Itinerary

• Day 1 : Arrive at Leh(11480ft)

  You need to fly down to Leh by the former hours of the day and pave your way towards Hotel that has been allotted to you. Get acclimatized to the weather conditions of Leh and stroll through the local bazaar of Ladakh . Return to your hotel by evening. Overnight stay in hotel.

• Day 2 : Leh - Chilling - Sku (11450ft)

  After Breakfast drive to Chilling. We cross the Zanskar River with a trolley bridge turn wise to join the waiting team on the other side of the river.

• Day 3 : Skiu - Markha (12630ft)

  The trail joins the Markha stream and will follow it for a few days. The day’s trek is relatively easy, but it involves crisscrossing the stream at numerous points depending on the water level. Markha has a monastery and a fort for a local cultural sightseeing.

• Day 4 : Markha - Hankar (13120ft)

  Many monasteries are spread along our route today. After the Umlung monastery, the valley narrows and we stop to camp at the foot of Kang Yaste (6400 m).

• Day 5 : Hankar - Nimaling (15255ft)

  Trek in the valley in direction of Zalung Karpo and Rupshu. We pass through Thagshungtse pasture and start our gradual ascent towards the wonderful high valleys of Ladakh.

• Day 6 : Nimaling - Kongmaru La (16900ft) - Chogdo (13120ft)

  Climb up to the summer pastures of Nimaling, used by the shepherds of Hankar and Markha, then follow the hedge to the top. The Kongmaru La pass commands a beautiful view of the Kang Yatze north face (6400 m), the Ladakh ranges and the Indus valley.

• Day 7 : Chogdo - Gyuncho La (15090ft) - (Camp at 14270ft)

  From now on, we will follow a new and rarely travelled route through the valleys to the east of our objective. Today, we turn towards the west into a tributary valley that leads after a long and gradual ascent to the Gyuncho La. We descent a few meters bellow to establish our campsite.

• Day 8 : Camp At 4350 M - Shang La (15750ft) - Matho Phu (14270ft)

  Today, we will cross many spurs and minor passes with occasional views northwards towards the Indus Valley and the peaks beyond. We climb up to the Shang La and then descend to the Tokpo River. Afterwards we will trek downhill to a nice camping place.

• Day 9 : Matho Phu - Mato La (15815ft) - Stok Kangri Base Camp (15420ft)

  At the pass, colourful prayer flags flap in the wind, with the Zanskari range in the background. Afterwards, we descend steadily along the Jingchan River. We get great views towards the Stock summit and the Stock Kangri (6121m).

• Day 10 : Acclimatization Day At Base Camp

• Day 11 : Summit Day (20500ft)

  Our route initially crosses scree and boulder slopes, and then leads to easy angled snow slopes, which require ice axe and crampons. The route is not difficult but at this altitude, it will be strenuous. From the summit of Stok Kangri, we should see as far as the Karakoram, the Pamirs and Tibet. If it’s warm enough we’ll rest and recover some energy on top before descending to base-camp.

• Day 12 : Stok Kangri Base Camp - Leh

  We leave Base Camp behind us and trek out to the small village of Stok – a beautiful morning trek descending through a gorge of multi-layered colourful rock which opens out into a wide valley. At Stok, we load up into the waiting vehicles and return to Leh (approx 30 mins) and our hotel, where you can relax and enjoy a hot shower and a cold beer before meeting up to celebrate our huge achievements. Night hotel.
