Masai Mara Game Drive

A game drive in Masai mara is one of the most exciting experiences that you can have in Kenya. Masai mara is home to over 3 million animals in a small area. We have the highest concentration of big cats in Masai mara than you can find anywhere else in the world. It’s only in Masai mara that you are guaranteed to see all the big five animals in a single day.

The Masai mara game drive will reward you with tens of lion prides, a cheetah’s chase, a leopard stalking prey, juvenile male elephants spurring, or even a wildebeest crossing the mara river with crocodiles in hot pursuit. Its only in Masai mara that a lion pride takes cover under the shade of your vehicle to escape the hot sun. A female cheetah and two of its cubs climb on your cars roof to have a vantage look out for prey or an elephant matriarch comes so close to your vehicle you can see her eye lashes.

Ballon Safari watching Wildebeest Migration in Mara

The park is known for its annual wildebeest migration that takes place every July to October. The wildebeest migration sees more than 2million wildebeests, zebra and gazelles migrate over 3,000km from Ngorongoro to Serengeti and into Masai mara and then back. The animals go through insurmountable huddles to reach their destination in search of fresh green pasture as they follow the rain patterns.

The great wildebeest migration of Masai mara brings in more than half a million visitors to this park every year and it corresponds with the summer season in the west. The migration is the single biggest event of the Masai mara as there is incessant action in this park for 3 months straight with crocodiles eating their fill, lions and leopards having a feast and the millions of wildebeest mowing grass through the savannah as they move north.
5. Wildlife Photographic safaris

Masai mara is continuous savannah grassland with little interruptions from trees. The savannah undulates up and down and ends in the horizon in one yellow continuous and dotted plain. This means wildlife is easy to see and follow with your camera while taking great pictures. The Masai mara is a big attraction for photography tours for professional and amateur wildlife photographers. There are specialist tour operators that offer professional photography services and even hire out cameras as desired.
6. Sightseeing in Masai Mara

Masai mara is also a great place to go for sightseeing from Nairobi. You will start with the views of the great golden plains of the Masai mara. The great Loita hills would also be a great place to see the Masai mara plains from the hills.

There are river Talek and Mara River which also form great views of landscape as well as the many swamps and water ponds in the park. A view from the escarpment from the mara Serena lodge is also a sight to behold. The sunset in Masai mara is like nothing you have seen with the golden hues.
7. Masai Mara Walking Safaris

The Masai mara is known for its great walking safaris among the animals. Conservancies around Masai mara offer day long or shorter walking safaris in the park to see the animals on foot. These are guided by an armed guide who knows how to translate animal behavior and have a keen eye to see wildlife from far off.

Walking safaris are also offered around the mara river to see the hippos and crocodiles near the river including some leopards and big cats. The Masai mara walking safaris are also sometimes done with the local Masai people who have lived with these animals for a long time.
8. Balloon Safaris

Balloon safaris in Masai mara are a great way to see the park and wildlife from the air in a silent gliding craft. The Masai mara balloon rides are offered by 3 or so companies and they get to pick you up from your lodge very early in the morning. The balloon rides are done very early in the worming when the weather is very calm with no winds.

A balloon ride starts at 6:00am in the morning and lasts for an hour of aerial game drive. The pilot prepares the balloon by blowing hot air into the chute and the basket is upright and you can hop in. He will then power it up and the helpers on the ground release the tethering ropes and off you go. The flight is quiet and chilly but you get to see a lot of wildlife as they wake up and start hunting.

On landing, they will have prepared a champagne bush breakfast for you which is very exciting as you sit among the grass with your table set in the mess of the savannah grass.
9. Masai Village Visit

There are Masai people that live in the conservancies around the Masai mara and they have their homesteads (Manyatta) where they keep cattle. The Manyatta is surrounded with a wall of thorn fence around the whole homestead to keep away the wild animals at night. In these villages, the Masai are happy to offer to show you their lifestyles.

A visit to a Masai village will show you’re the Masai people way of life and you can learn such things as traditional archery, how to make fire using 2 sticks only among other things. You will also be able to see the inside of a Masai house, learn how to dance like a Masai warrior and they also perform some traditional songs like a marriage dance etc. It’s very exciting to see how the Masai live among the animals in Masai mara.
