A holiday where you choose the dates and leave the rest to us. May can be magic in eastern Newfoundland. The ocean is alive as millions of seabirds feed along the coast enjoying the bounty of the subarctic springtime. Nests are built, burrows are dug, and the coastline is abuzz with soaring gannets, colourful puffins and the first whales of the year. Most years we also enjoy giant Greenland icebergs likely calved from the same glacier as the iceberg that sank the Titanic. Newfoundland and Labrador provides easy access to the hemisphere’s largest icebergs. May is a time when the fishing communities come to life as boats head out for fresh lobster and other delicious local seafoods. This trip enjoys the comforts of olde St. John’s in the evening while providing three fun days of exploration and wildlife that features the highlights of the city and the countryside. Many guests use our May Magic program to explore the wonders of eastern Newfoundland on a tour where they often find themselves enjoying an exclusive excursion. We are delighted to provide these distinctive excursions as described but we also welcome inquiries from folks who want to customize this itinerary or the accommodations to match their own interests.Transportation to and/or from Newfoundland
Day 1 : Welcome and Orientation
Pick up at airport and short orientation tour of St. John’s. An evening picture show will introduce you to the highlights of the upcoming adventure.
Day 2 : Puffins and Icebergs
Today begins with a boat tour featuring North America’s largest puffin colony, and thousands of other seabirds. Often we find dolphins, humpbacks, and the year’s first fin whales. We enjoy a local lunch at a small restaurant (or a picnic lunch in a natural setting) before visiting one of the New World’s earliest fishing villages.
Day 3 : Outports and Wilderness
Members of the world’s most southerly caribou herd, a small puffin colony, and seals are usually seen as we circle the Avalon Wilderness Area.
Day 4 : Sea Stacks, Seabirds and Lightthouses
Travel to North America’s most easterly point and briefly explore the oldest City before traveling to the first outpost of New France. Then we visit the Continent’s third largest gannet colony. This site is also a breeding ground for thousands of other seabirds and they will all be waiting for your camera. Another caribou herd, land-based whale watching, and moose are often part of the day’s wonders. Enjoy a farewell dinner in the city.
