4 Nights / 5 Days
We are offering this exploratory excursion for your preferred dates up to May 20, 2018. Enjoy the local knowledge of west coast naturalist and photographer Mark Tsang. This is Mark’s favorite time of the year. To the north there are icebergs drifting by. Birds of prey are establishing new territories and reclaiming old ones. There is usually snow in the mountains and the ptarmigan are somewhere between winter and breeding colours. Moose and caribou are walking the lowlands in great numbers. Their first calves are harder to find as the mother’s are mindful of hunting bears, lynx, eagles, and coyotes. The first wildflowers and songbirds are beginning to show colour in anticipation of a busy subarctic summer. The mountains of Gros Morne provide spectacular photographic opportunities during this season of magic, reawakening, and rejuvenation in May on the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland. This is a small-group vacation that lets us view fossils, mountains, and a dramatic, glacially scoured landscape as we travel the roads and trails of western and northern Newfoundland… enjoy the magic of May with Mark.
Arrive at Deer Lake Airport (YDF). Explore the local area until all hands arrive and then it’s on to Gros Morne National Park for the night.
Today we explore the centre of the earth — poetically speaking — and we walk some of the dramatic trails along the southside of the park. Moose, serpentine rock thrust up from inside the earth’s mantle, and picturesque fishing communities add to the day’s highlights.
The fossils, flowers, and trails along the northside of the park are included among the day’s highlights as we travel north to Hawke’s Bay for the evening. Watch for moose, caribou, ptarmigan, arctic hare, and other wildlife that are on list of highlights we hope to see. Expect frequent photographic stops.
The land of Vikings and icebergs is today’s destination as we travel to L’Anse aux Meadows and Fishing Point in St. Anthony. Our route features moose, caribou, coastal lookouts, fossil beds, and other photographic wonders. If time and ice conditions allow, we’ll travel out on the St. Anthony tour boat in search of icebergs, seals, whales, and seabirds.
Today we further explore the north coast of Newfoundland watching for seals, whales, icebergs, and other subarctic wonders before travelling south to Corner Brook and our last evening of this magical May photographic programme. Tommorrow you depart.
