Mount Meru Trekking Description:
Mount Meru is an often overlooked, but spectacular volcano at 4,566 m (14,980 feet), located in
the center of Arusha National Park. The crowds that summit Kilimanjaro are non-existent here,
allowing for a solitary, peaceful trek. Accommodations are in wooden huts.
On the lower slopes of the mountain and inside the park, there is a good chance of spotting animals.
An armed ranger will accompany your party on the first stage to protect against any wildlife
threats. The trail follows the north rim of the crater, along a dramatic ridgeline. Once at the summit,
the views of Mount Kilimanjaro and down into Meru crater are unforgettable.

Why everyone should climb Kilimanjaro’s little brother…?
Mount Meru, which overlooks the city of Arusha from the north, is used by many trekkers as
a warm-up trek to Kilimanjaro. In other words, it acts as an hors d’oeuvre to the main course of
Kilimanjaro, which lies about 60km to the east from Mount Meru.
And a perfect starter it is too: Though smaller, it’s also quite similar in several ways. Firstly, to
reach its volcanic summit you have first to climb through a number of vegetation zones. Secondly,
for the final march to the summit you walk at night. And what’s more, like Kilimanjaro, the highest
point itself is just the highest point on the crater rim.
What’s more, at 4566m (14,980ft) is, it provides the trekker with the perfect opportunity to
acclimatize to Kilimanjaro’s rarified atmosphere.
In other words, the mountain offers a taste of the challenges that lie ahead on Kilimanjaro, whilst
also whetting the appetite for the thrills and beauty of that mountain.
However, Meru is worth doing as much for the differences as for the similarities it shares with
Kilimanjaro. In particular, there’s the greater abundance of wildlife. It lies at the heart of Arusha
National Park, a reserve that’s teeming with animals. Trekkers should see buffalos, giraffes,
elephants, bushbuck, dik dik, colobus monkeys, blue monkey and warthog. Luckier ones may also
see leopard and hyena. While twitchers will be more than content with the variety of birdlife on
offer. These include the noisy Hartlaub’s turaco, the silver-cheeked hornbill and black-and-white
bulbul.
When trekking Mount Meru on a clear day, you'll enjoy spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro,
which is around 50 miles away and close to Moshi town plus the fact that, Because Mt Meru is in
the middle of Arusha National Park, the beginning of the trek is also a walking safari where has
travelers following animal tracks at the foothills of the Meru Mountain, under the guidance of a
run ranger guide he who will be ensuring their safety while passing near wild animals.
Meru is not an easy mountain:
It all sounds like the perfect holiday, no? A safari-and-trek all rolled into one. Well, yes, in a sense
it is. But there is one point that I must emphasize: Do not underestimate Mount Meru. Though it
may be more than a thousand meters lower than Kilimanjaro, it’s still well above the height
necessary to bring about altitude sickness. And with almost everybody taking just over two days
before reaching the summit, the risks are not small.
There is also some night-time scrambling. It’s nothing serious, and you don’t need any climbing
skills to complete it. But there is nevertheless more scrambling on this mountain than on
Kilimanjaro.
So though Mount Meru may not carry the cachet, prestige or the sheer scale of Kilimanjaro, it’s
no pushover. Perhaps it’s no coincidence that the first successful recorded ascent, though still in
dispute (being credited to either Carl Uhlig in 1901 or Fritz Jaeger in 1904), occurred at least a
dozen years after the conquest of Kilimanjaro.
Meru remains an awfully big mountain – the 05th highest peak in Africa in fact – and as such it
should be treated with respect.
The Meru Trekking Route:
There is only one main route up Meru. It begins at Momela Gate, around 15km from the main
Ngongongare entrance to the park where you pay your park fees. Having paid up and driven those
15km, past the plain known as Little Serengeti (Serengeti Ndogo) because of its similarity to
Tanzania’s most famous park, you arrive at Momela Gate (altitude 1597m; 5240ft). Here you pick
up your ranger and possibly hire your porters.
The route from Momela Gate to the summit is punctuated by two sets of accommodation huts. The
first are the Miriakamba Huts (2503m, 8212ft), a day’s walk from Momela Gate. The second are
the Saddle Huts (3560m, 11,680ft), lying a short day’s walk from there. From the Saddle Huts it’s
a further day’s walk – or rather, a night’s walk – to the summit. So there’s no camping on Meru –
you all stay in the huts.

Day 1 : TREK DAY 01:- HOTEL TO MOMELLA GATE TO MIRIAKAMBA HUT – First day of your trek
Pick up at your hotel this morning and drive from Arusha to Momella Gate takes about 1 hour or
45 minutes. Once at the gate we will finish all the procedures and depart for the trek. The trek takes
you through places from where you can catch breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the
renowned Momella lakes. Trekkers encounter wildlife like Bushbucks, Cape Buffaloes, Giraffes,
and Warthogs during this day. We continue a short distance until we reach the Miriakamba hut.
Elevation: 1500m/4921ft to 2500m/8202ft
Distance: 6km/3.5mi
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Meals: Lunch and Dinner
Day 2 : TREK DAY 02:- MIRIAKAMBA HUT TO SADDLE HUT.
Today we trek through the steep path along the ridge of the saddle. On the way, you can witness
the stunning Meru crater, the ash cone, and little Meru. There are chances of us encountering
wildlife like Cape Buffaloes and the black and white Colobus monkey. We will end the trek up at
Saddle hut. Once you have settled at the camp we will set off on a short trek to little Meru
(3810m) for acclimatization purpose and return to Saddle hut.
Elevation: 2500m/8202ft to 3500m/11483ft.
Distance: 6km/3.5mi.
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
Day 3 : TREK DAY 03:- SADDLE HUT TO SUMMIT TO MIRIAKAMBA HUT TO MOMELLA GATE AND HEADING TO ARUSHA TOWN.
We will wake up just after midnight and have a light meal to keep our energies high. Once done
with the meal we start the final ascent to Socialist Peak. This ascent will be steep and we will be
making our way through gravel and rocky cliffs. This is the most mentally and physically
challenging portion of the trek. Once at the summit, you will enjoy the magnificent views of the
Meru Crater and the Ash cone. There are chances that one might catch a glimpse of wildlife like
mountain Reedbucks and Klipspringers over the rocky ridge.
From the summit, we begin our descent by continuing straight down to the Miriakamba hut then
will have sometimes to rest and have lunch before proceeding to Momella gate heading out of
the park back to Moshi Town for overnight at a your own designated hostel/hotel, this
accommodation is not included into our price tagged on this itinerary.
Elevation: 3500m/11483ft to 4562m/14967ft down to 1500m/4921ft
Distance: 28km/17mi
Hiking Time: 13-14 hours
Meals: Breakfast and Lunch
Overnight at Your own designated hotel/hostel or in Moshi. After back from trek then a drop-off at your
hotel will mark the end of our services with you and from there we shall say goodbye to each other while
hoping of meeting again in the future and serving together again.
