Day wise Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival at Guwahati, Assam - Transfer to Samdrup Jongkhar, Bhutan

Upon arrival at Guwahati International Airport, you will be picked up by your guide driver who will transfer you to Samdrup Jongkhar, Bhutan. The drive is about 110kms and takes about 3-4 hours depending on traffic.

Day 2 : Samdrup Jongkhar - Trashigang

It is a long and tiring day of drive but is also one of the best stretches to drive on as you start driving up the Himalayan Foothills to the high mountain top and ride along the ridges with beautiful scenery of mountains.

The total driving time for today will be about 8-9 hours

Day 3 : Trashigang - Trashi Yangtse Excursion and back

After breakfast drive to Trashi Yangtse, which is about 70km from Trashigang. The road will take you through Gom Kora, a very sacred place where Guru Padmasambhava subdued the demons residing in that area, a small temple has been built in that place. Thereafter, you will cross a small river and then start climbing up the slopes of the mountain, that slope doesn’t have many trees giving you excellent view during the drive. Once there, go visit Chorten Kora which is just below the township. The stupa resembles Boudanath Stupa in Kathmandu and is actually a copy of the stupa in Kathmandu.

Go towards Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary. At the bridge there is a small check post from where you will have to get a permit to visit the park. Bumdeling is the other valley where Black Necked Cranes stay during winter to escape the harsh Tibetan weather.

You can visit the park office if you want any information, if not, you can walk around the valley and visit the villages there.

Drive back to Tashi Yangtse town and have lunch, then before driving back to Trashigang go and visit the School of 13 Arts and Crafts, that’s another branch of the school in Thimphu. Drive back to Trashigang after that, if you’d like then you can go up to Tsenkharla from the road diversion at Zangpozor, which is about 7-10 km before reaching the bridge near Gom Kora. Tsenkharla is on top of the hill and almost plateau like. You can see Arunachal Pradesh from here.

Day 4 : Trashigang - Mongar

Post breakfast, start driving towards Mongar. It’s a beautiful drive near the banks of the river for the first half and then you start climbing up to Korila pass and cross over to Mongar where you can have lunch before continuing your drive towards Lhuentse. Lhuentse is not visited by tourists much but is a beautiful place and the drive is even more enjoyable than Trashigang-Mongar part, and is notably famed for its weavers and special textiles and fabrics. The Kurtoe region of Lhuentshe is also the heartland of the Royal Dynasty.

Day 5 : Lhuentse excursion - Transfer to Mongar

Post breakfast, visit Lhuentshe Dzong: The Dzong was founded by Lam Ngagi Wangchuk when he built a temple in the place the dzong stands today, it was, however, Trongsa Penlop, Chogyal Minjur Tempa who built a formal Dzong in 1654 after winning a battle against the Chokhor Deb of Bumthang and also to consolidate the Drukpa power hold in the East.

After that, drive to Khoma Village. This village is known as the textile center of Bhutan and is famous for the silk textiles the women weave. One of the most sought after designs, the Kishuthara intricate and each Kira takes about 6months to 1year to complete.

Then come back and visit Guru Nangsi Zilnoen Statue: The statue of Guru Padmasambhava is located in Takila, overlooking the river valleys below; It was originally supposed to be 148ft but later changed to its current height of 173ft, and is one of the biggest of Guru and was built to bring peace and prosperity and to benefit all the sentient beings in the world. Due to environmental constraints machines were not used in the construction of this statue.

Have lunch in town and then drive to Mongar to spend the night

Day 6 : Mongar - Trashigang

Post breakfast you will drive towards Trashigang and there you will be visiting various places like Tashigang Dzong Tashigang is located in the Far East corner of the country. Tashigang town, on the hillside above the Gamri Chu river, was once the center for a thriving trade with neighboring Tibet in the north. It is the junction of the east-west highway, one of the major arteries of the country, with road connections to Samdrup Jongkhar and then into the northeastern Indian state of Assam. The town is also the primary marketplace for the seminomadic people of Merak and Sakteng, who are known for their attractive costumes and their way of dressing up beautifully.

Day 7 : Trashigang – Samdrup Jongkhar

Post a leisurely breakfast, take a stroll in town before driving towards Samdrup Jongkhar
