Package Overview

The twin peaks of 7818m Nanda Devi, the bliss-giving goddess, form India's second highest mountain, situated in a remote region bordering Nepal and Tibet. The alpine glaciers, high valleys and flower-strewn meadows on the eastern approach to this magnificent mountain are an enticing world apart and ideal for trekking. Our trek starts at the quiet hill town of Munsiyari, where we descend to the lush Milam Valley, whose semi-tropical rainforests are alive with huge butterflies, exotic birds and large lizards. Once an important trade route, the broad trail was built by the British and is still used by local people to travel from village to village. Following the gorge of the Gori Ganga, we weave high above its foaming waters, climbing steadily among rhododendron forests, which support a botanist's paradise of ferns, orchids, peonies and hydrangea. The Hindu shrine of Naha Devi heralds new vistas as the valley opens up to reveal the snow-capped peaks that tower above it. In the rain shadow of these mountains, the vegetation of the upper valley is sparser and the villages are only inhabited in the summer months. We now leave the main trail to explore some of the side valleys, whose lure is irresistible. The beautiful Lawan Valley is the usual approach to the base camp for 7340m high Nanda Devi East while the Pachu Valley leads to the glacier of the same name, which lies 4000m below the summit of the mountain. We make camp in this spectacular setting and with luck enjoy magical views of Nanda Devi and Nanda Devi East bathed in the warm glow of sunrise, before exploring along the edge of the glacier. Back in the main valley, we continue to Milam village, from where we explore the upper valley and its glacier, set to a splendid backdrop of the 7000m peaks of Hardeol and Trisuli.

Day wise Itinerary

• Day 1 : Kathgodam-almora

  Arrive at Kathgodam 06:30 hrs. Received by our escort and transferred to waiting vehicle and drive to Almora (90 kms, 3 hrs). Check in hotel.

• Day 2 : Almora- Munsiyari

  After breakfast drive to Munsyari (6hrs) along a road that winds itself up to a height of 2748 mts before descending into the glorious Munsyari valley. Check in at Zara Resort for a good rest.

• Day 3 : Munsiyari- Lilam

  After breakfast drive for 6kms to Dumar and then the trek begins. Our destination is past Lilam village (7 kms) where we camp for the night.

• Day 4 : Lilam- Bogdiyar

  Today is a strenuous walk along a gorge past the Gori Ganga River. The route is fairly up and down but generally eases off before reaching the camp site at Bogdiyar.

• Day 5 : Bogdiyar-rilkot

  You are in high mountain country now and the tree line disappears giving access to vast stretches of Alpine pastures. The day's walk ends at Rilkot.

• Day 6 : Rilkot- Ganghar

  From Rilkot we cross Martoli a deserted settlement and will continue to Ganghar (3260 mts,). Throughout the day one gets intermittent views of magnificent Himalayan peaks and just after reaching campsite you will glimpse Nanda Devi East.

• Day 7 : Ganghar – Nanda Devi Base Camp

  It is the day when you walk from Ganghar to Pachu (3950 mts, 6 kms) and the camp site is in an exquisite location. An Alpine meadow laden with rhododendron bushes blooming pink and white, stretches of glacial ice and the massive Nanda Devi looming in front. it is just another 5 kms away.

• Day 8 : Exploration Around Base Camp

  How can you walk away from here? It is a day to rest and simply enjoy you in this magnificent location. Options include the hike up to the snow ridges of Nanda Devi East and a visit to the base of Nanda Lampak (5782 mts.). There have been several sightings of blue sheep in the region.

• Day 9 : Base Camp – Milam Village

  It is time to return and we descend form Pachu to ghanghar and upto Milam. The scenery is exciting as the valley opens up. The north faces of the Nanda Devi peaks, several peaks on the Nanda Devi Sanctuary wall and Hardeol group are visible. Our camp site is close to the Goriganga River amidst a lush green meadow.

• Day 10 : Milam Village- Milam Glacier

  We will explore Milam glacier and other interesting places around the glacier. Afternoon back to campsite for hot lunch. Evening at leisure.

• Day 11 : Milam – Tola- Martoli Village

  After breakfast we trek 5-6hrs down to Sumdo via tola. The walk is pleasant today and we have excellent views of a good number of major peaks as we descend through the Gori Ganga gorge. To night we camp on a plateau near Martoli village.

• Day 12 : Martoli-bogdiyar

  A long day walks back to Bogdiyar village. Camping

  • Themes : Camping

• Day 13 : Bogdiyar-lilam- Munsiyari

  We descend along the Gori Ganga gorge up to Lilam village; we get on to a waiting jeep that takes us to Munsiyari for night stay.

• Day 14 : Munsiyari- Binsar

  After breakfast we drive 175km to Binsar. Binsar is located on hill top with amazing views all around. We could see sunrise and sunset from one point and Nanda Devi and other mountains from far distance.

• Day 15 : Binsar

  we rest on this day or enjoy watching many colorful birds. Overnight stay in Hotel.

• Day 16 : Binsar- Delhi

  Afternoon we will drive to Kathgodam railway station to take night train to Delhi. Trip Ends
