Day wise Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Arrival

You will be met at Johannesburg Airport and transferred to your hotel in this thriving city.

Check in and relax under warm blue South African skies in 'Egoli' - the city of gold.

  • Day 2 : Johannesburg

Today enjoy a private tour of the city of Johannesburg.

We start with a visit to Constitution Hill - the site of the notorious Old Fort Prison, and continue to the poignant Apartheid Museum, a living memorial to racial segregation.

We then drive to the sprawling township of Soweto for lunch (own account). Here we visit the original home of Nelson Mandela in Vilikazi Street and significant memorials to the freedom struggle, including the Hector Pietersen Museum, before returning to your hotel in the late afternoon.

  • Day 3 : Lilieslief Farm

This morning we visit Lilieslief Farm, secretly used as a base by the African National Congress (ANC) and where many of its prominent leaders were arrested, leading up to the infamous Rivonia Treason Trial. It is now a museum and heritage site.

Afterwards we drive to Lesedi Cultural Village, an authentically reconstructed African village, to learn more about the culture, arts and crafts of South Africa’s five main tribes. Enjoy a meal at Lesedi, a visit to a sangoma (traditional healer) and traditional African dancing before returning to Johannesburg.

  • Day 4 : Transkei

Transfer to Johannesburg Airport for your onward flight.

You will be met at Umtata airport and transferred to your hotel in the capital of the Transkei.

Check in and relax in the region that gave birth to Nelson Mandela.

  • Day 5 : Nelson Mandela Museum

Today we visit the Bhunga Building in Umtata and continue 45-minutes to the Nelson Mandela Youth & Heritage Centre in the small town of Qunu in the rural heartland of the Xhosa nation, where Nelson Madela grew up.

These two sites comprise the Nelson Mandela Museum which houses a fascinating collection of photographs, personal memorabilia, documents, gifts and children’s artwork dedicated to the apartheid struggle, as well as rare video-taped interviews with Mandela and other liberation leaders.

We also visit his grave in the small cemetry in Qunu, before returning to Umtata.

  • Day 6 : Cape Town

Transfer to Umtata Airport for your onward flight.

You will be met at Cape Town Airport and transferred to your hotel in this beautiful city, within sight of Table Mountain.

Check in and relax in your magnificent surroundings.

  • Day 7 : Day at leisure

Today learn more about history of the Cape, starting with a drive past the Castle of Good Hope built by Jan Van Riebeeck, the Dutch governor who first colonised the area in 1652.

We visit the District Six Museum, which tells the story of human suffering caused by the forced removals of the apartheid era (closed on Sundays), before continuing to the low security Drakenstein Correctional Centre near Paarl, formerly known as Victor Verter Prison. Nelson Mandela spent his final year in captivity here, living in a small house inside the prison compound, before he was released in February 1990 after 27 years in prison. There is a statue of him outside the prison.

We then return to Cape Town to view other historic buildings - including the Bo-Kaap (the old Malay slave quarter), City Hall and Grand Parade, where Nelson Mandela first addressed the nation after his release from prison, and the Houses of Parliament where he served as South Africa's first black president. Time permitting, you can visit the beautiful Company Gardens.

In the afternoon, you will be dropped off at the Clock Tower on the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront for the ferry to Robben Island. The guides are all former prisoners, each able to provide their own personal insight into conditions on the island and a very poignant experience.

When you return, look out for the bronze statutes of the four Nobel Laureates that grace the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, each of whom placed a significant role in South Africa's transition to democracy - founding ANC president Albert Luthuli, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela and former apartheid president FW De Klerk.

Afterwards you can dine at one of the many restaurants on the waterfront, before making your way back to your hotel by taxi (own account).

Note: You will need to take your passport or driving licence for identification, when visiting Robben Island.

  • Day 8 : Pollsmoor Prison

Today enjoy a full day private tour to the beautiful Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve.

Our first stop is at Pollsmoor Prison, the maximum security prison that Mandela was transferred to for 7 years, after spending 19 years on Robben Island. Here we visit the prison restaurant that is open to the public, to get a feel for conditions here (food for own account).

We drive to naval Simons Town and visit the resident penguin colony at Boulders Beach, before continuing to spectacular Cape Point where you may see baboons, ostrich and perhaps even dolphins or whales in season (July/November).

In the afternoon we return via Chapman’s Peak Drive to Hout Bay, where we enjoy a short boat trip to see Cape Fur seals at Seal Island, before returning to Cape Town.

  • Day 9 : Cape Town

Today is free for independent sightseeing in Cape Town.

We recommend you purchase a day pass onboard the convenient Hop-Off Bus, which stops at all Cape Town’s key sights and beaches. The "Red Route" bus stops at the Table Mountain base station, where you can buy a ticket to ascend by cable car and enjoy one of the world’s most famous views.

Continue to Camps Bay beach and the many attractions of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.

  • Day 10 : Stellenbosch Winelands

Today enjoy a full day private tour to the renowned Stellenbosch Winelands, travelling through the scenic Franschhoek Valley where a handful of French Huguenot refugees started South Africa’s now famous wine industry.

We visit two wine estates, with included wine tastings, and the historic university town of Stellenbosch before enjoying a picnic lunch at a wine estate (own account).

In the afternoon we visit a third wine estate and the Cheetah Outreach project in Somerset West. This community-based programme seeks to raise awareness of the plight of the cheetah and campaign for its survival. Observe these magnificent endangered cats up close, before returning to Cape Town.

  • Day 11 : Departure

Transfer to Cape Town Airport for your flight home.
