Day 2 : South Luangwa National Park
Transfer to Lusaka Airport for your light aircraft flight to Mfuwe, the gateway to South Luangwa National Park.
You will be met at Mfuwe Airport and transferred to one of the world's most famously remote wildlife areas. Settle into your lodge in this renowned wildlife wilderness, before setting out in the late afternoon on a game drive with a lodge ranger. Game is most easily sighted in the dry season from April to October, but the park is at its most beautiful in the first half of the year after the rains of the wet season. Also enjoy a night drive this evening.
Note: Minimum age of 21 years on this walking safari.
Day 3 : South Luangwa National Park
After an early breakfast, we drive 55 miles (90 km) up the Mupamadzi River to our mobile walking camp in the remote northern sector of South Luangwa National Park.
We arrive around midday at our very simple camp, consisting of three twin walk-in Meru style tents that open both ends for good ventilation - with camp beds, mattresses, sheets, blankets, bucket shower and long-drop bush toilet for each tent. The dining table is under the shadiest tree and the bar is a small table with glasses and drinks, next to a gas fridge that keeps the beer and wine chilled. Paraffin lamps and torches are used for lighting. The food is first class and bottled water is provided. The camp is completely mobile, moving ahead of us each day as we walk so that we always arrive to cold drinks and lunch on the table.
Enjoy a relaxing siesta after lunch, before going for a walk around camp in the afternoon and returning to sundowners and dinner under the stars.
Day 4 : South Luangwa National Park
We are up at sunrise for our morning walk. The area is remote and wild, the terrain and habitats varied and the game shy and unused to man. From ants to buffalo, a birds nest to tracking a lion, you will learn the many facets of the bush.
This area, which is very different from the Luangwa Valley, boasts the clear and shallow Mupamadzi River rising in the nearby mountains. We cross the river many times - the ritual of taking off walking boots and cooling the feet becomes second nature - whilst observing game in a wide variety of terrains including foothills, open plains, thickets, wooded parklands, reedbeds and forests.
We rise early each morning and walk until around eleven, when we arrive at camp for lunch. After a siesta and tea, we set off again for a short walk before sunset and each evening relax by the campfire under balmy African skies.
Day 5 : Day at Leisure
Rise early, when game viewing conditions are at their best, to enjoy viewing wildlife in this great conservation area. The walking safari originated in this park and it is still one of the finest ways to experience this pristine wildlife wilderness.
We explore the area on foot, returning to the same campsite today.
Day 6 : Day at Leisure
Today we move camp as we walk further down the Mupamadzi River, which is a major tributary of the Luangwa River.
We reach camp and relax in the heat of the day, before venturing out again in the afternoon for another walk in search of elephants, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, crocodiles, hippo, lion, the elusive leopard and much more. All walks are led by an experienced naturalist and accompanied by an armed game scout.
Day 7 : South Luangwa National Park
Enjoy another day of walking in the northern sector of South Luangwa National Park today.
This is Zambia’s most famous wildlife park, covering an area in excess of 5,600 square miles (9,050 square kilometres). Sustained by the great Luangwa River, the park hosts a wide variety of wildlife, birds and vegetation. The changing seasons add to the park’s richness, ranging from dry bare bushveld in the winter to a lush green in the summer. We return to the same camp today and and listen to the untamed sounds of wildlife all around.
Day 8 : Luangwa River
After an early breakfast we transfer 5-hours to the Luangwa River, where we cross by boat to our safari lodge for some well deserved relaxation at the end of our walking safari.
With over 60 different animal and over 400 bird species, the concentration of game around the Luangwa River and its ox bow lagoons is amongst the highest in Africa, including four of the Big Five – lion, elephant, buffalo and leopard – with leopard sightings being particularly outstanding.
Aftter lunch and a siesta, enjoy an afternoon and an evening game drive, followed by a final dinnner under the stars.
Day 9 : Departure
After some final early morning game viewing, transfer to Mfuwe Airport for your flight home.
