There is a special vibe to Key West. It is a relaxed and lazy city, but, on the other hand, it is vibrant and energetic. It is not difficult to find the perfect combination to see the city for what it is if you decide to bike. Upon arrival at the shop, you'll be fitted with the proper size bike. These are single-speed, beach cruiser-type bicycles with the backpedal brake. It may take a little practice remembering how we used to ride, but in no time you'll be up and biking with your basket of belongings in front and a bottle of water.
The shady streets and busy shopping areas are part of the scene. The highlights are many, including numerous beaches and bars. Among them are the Simonton Street Beach, the Green Parrot Bar, the Key West Cemetery, and Higgs Beach. You are on the southernmost point of the United States, just 90 miles north of Cuba, but no, you can't see Cuba, even on a clear day, unless you stopped in one of the bars before biking (not allowed!).
There are some interesting sights and special history here. The Customs House, which looks over Mallory Square, dates back to 1891 and has been faithfully restored. It is a 4-story architectural gem and originally home to the island's customs office, postal service, and the district courts. It is now "Old 91," a national landmark and headquarters of the Key West Art & Historical Society.
Many are not aware that Harry S. Truman used the island as the base of presidential operations during his 11 visits to Key West. Now you know, and will see the Presidential Gates of the Harry S. Truman Little White House that was originally the first officer's quarters on the submarine base naval station. It was built in 1890 and still stands today.
Almost everyone is aware that Ernest Hemingway lived here for awhile and his residence in on your route. Located at 907 Whitehead Street, it sits across from the Key West Lighthouse. Hemingway lived here from 1931 to 1939. He had favorite haunts here and one was Sloppy Joe's Bar. Founded in 1933, the bar was originally located on Greene Street during the Hemingway days. It has moved to the famous Duval Street, but those connections to Hemingway and dozens of other well-known visitors still remain. It is worth a visit, even if you aren't drinking.
Your ride will check off plenty of other highlights that you can return to later in the day. Dog Beach, Flagler Train Depot, and, of course, Jimmy Buffet's first house and his Margaritaville on Duval Street are on the agenda.
Your guide will end the ride with a true Key West treat, a slice of Key Lime pie from the best of the bakers in town. Now you can check that off your list as well.
