Day wise Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Arrival

You will be met at Nairobi Airport by your guide and transferred 3-hours to Lake Nakuru in the heart of the Great Rift Valley, travelling in a safari jeep (with pop-up roof for game viewing).

A soda lake on the floor of the Rift Valley, at certain times of the year Lake Nakuru is home to many flamingos and over 400 different bird species. The lake is also a haven for certain endangered species including the Rothschild giraffe and black and white rhino.

Time permitting, enjoy an afternoon game drive into Lake Nakuru National Park.

  • Day 2 : Lake Nakuru National Park

Today enjoy exploring beautiful Lake Nakuru National Park with your guide (with picnic lunch included).

With its significant population of rhino, giraffe and huge throng of pelicans on its salt waters, this beautiful lake offers sanctuary for a wide variety of wildlife - including large herds of buffalo, zebra, giraffe, monkeys, baboons, lions, thompsons gazelle, impala, ostrich and much more.

Enjoy a full day discovering the wildlife that lives around the lake.

  • Day 3 : Masai Mara National Park

A full day on the road today as we travel 6.5-hours from Lake Nakuru to the Masai Mara National Park, named after the Masai people and the Mara River which divides the park.

We drive past Maai Mahiu and down to the vast plains on the floor of the Rift Valley, keeping an eye out for herds of giraffe and gazelle. From Narok, the district headquarters of this part of Maasailand, we traverse the "breadbasket" of Kenya, where acres of wheat and barley cover the landscape, as we travel towards the Masai Mara.

Masai Mara National Park is famous for its exceptional population of game and the annual migration of zebra and wildebeest from the adjoining Serengeti National Park. This phenomenon occurs every year from July to October, when game migrates along a circular route from the plains of the Serengeti to the Masai Mara and back again in search of fresh pastures, followed by hungry predators - most notably lions and hyena. Check into your lodge in this magnificent wildlife sanctuary.

  • Day 4 : Masai Mara National Park

Today is dedicated to game viewing on the open plains of the world famous Masai Mara National Park, with your driver/guide.

Nestled within the enormous Great Rift Valley, the Masai Mara is famous for its many prides of lions, packs of hyena and other predators - as well as huge herds of wildebeest, which number over one million, zebra and giraffe. All the Big Five can be seen here, as well as numerous other species including the Thomson's gazelle, topi, kongoni, impala, roan antelope and hippo. The nocturnal bat-eared fox, rarely found elsewhere in Kenya, also inhabits this park as well as the endangered cheetah and black rhino. Bird watching is also excellent with over 450 different species including the vulture, marabou stork, secretary bird, hornbill, crowned crane, ostrich, long-crested eagle and African pygmy-falcon.

Set off early each morning, when game viewing conditions are at their best, to view the abundant wildlife of this region. Return to the lodge to rest in the heat of the day, before setting off again in the late afternoon for another game drive.

  • Day 5 : Lake Victoria

A full day on the road today, as we leave the Masai Mara and drive to the shores of Lake Victoria, the largest inland lake in Africa and the source of the great River Nile.

After a day of game viewing, at Isebania we cross the border into Tanzania and check into our lodge at Speke Bay, an area of great natural beauty with outstanding birding.

  • Day 6 : Lake Victoria

This morning you will be collected by local fishermen in their canoes, who will take you to meet the people of their village.

The balance of the day is at leisure to relax on the shores of Lake Victoria. Situated on an elevated plateau in the western section of the Great Rift Valley and straddling the equator, the lake has more than 3,000 islands. Its shoreline stretches 2,138 miles (3,440 km) and forms the border between three countries - Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

Lake Victoria is a biodiversity hotspot offering outstanding birding - with a boat ride on the lake discovering African skimmers, Carruthers cisticola, northern brown-throated weavers, red-chested weavers, eastern grey plantain-eaters, water dikkop and if you are fortunate papyrus gonolek. A walk in the forest will reveal Stulhman's starlings, greenbuls, alethes, turacos, forest weavers, warblers, widowbirds and beautiful butterflies. You can also visit a local fishing village and canoe on the lake.

Please note that you should not swim in Lake Victoria due to the threat of bilharzia.

  • Day 7 : Lake Victoria

After a morning to relax and enjoy the views over Lake Victoria, in the afternoon we travel into the great Serengeti.

Serengeti National Park (meaning 'Endless Plains), is a World Heritage site that hosts the largest overland wildlife migration in the world. Each October over 2 million wildebeest and accompanying wildlife travel over 500 miles, as they journey from the open plains of the Masai Mara and across the hills of the Serengeti to the southern plains. After calving in February, from April onwards the great migration starts once again as these millions of animals move northwards, crossing the treacherous Grumeti River in the western corridor in search of the sweet new grasses of the Mara. Check into your lodge in this magnificent wildlife area.

  • Day 8 : Serengeti National Park

Today is devoted to early morning and late afternoon game viewing in the great Serengeti National Park.

This vast conservation area, which is larger than Northern Ireland, lies between Lake Victoria in the west, Lake Eyasi in the south and the Great Rift Valley in the east. The landscape varies from open grass plains in the south, savanna with scatterred acacia trees in the centre, hilly wooded grasslands in the north and woodlands and clay pans in the west - with small rivers, lakes ands swamps scattered throughout.

With more than 70 large mammals and over 500 other animal species, including large prides of lions and great herds of wildebeest, zebras and gazelle, outstanding game viewing is guaranteed on a scale only seen in East Africa. Bird watching is also outstanding.

  • Day 9 : Serengeti National Park

After some final game viewing in Serengeti National Park, we drive to Olduvai Gorge where Louis and Mary Leakey famously discovered the remains of early man, with picnic lunch included.

We continue 3-hours to the famous Ngorongoro Crater. Stretching across 8,300 sq km, the high altitude Ngorongoro Conservation Area boasts a dramatic variety of volcanic landscapes, wildlife, people and archaeology. Its grasslands, waterfalls and mountain forests are home to an abundance of animals and also to the Masai people, and has been declared a World Heritage site. Check into your lodge and enjoy the beauty of this area.

  • Day 10 : Ngorongoro Crater

Today enjoy a tour into the basin of the Ngorongoro Crater, including game viewing and a picnic lunch on the crater floor.

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact caldera, forming a spectacular bowl of about 265 square kilometres with sides up to 2,000 feet (600m) deep. Although animals are free to move in and out of this contained environment, the rich volcanic soil, lush forests and spring lakes on the crater floor attract both grazers and predators all year round, with up to 30,000 animals living in the crater - including endangered rhino, lion, hyena and jackal on the open savanna and elephants and monkeys in the forests. You may also see flamingos on the lake.

On the way back to our lodge, we visit a Maasai Village to learn more about the culture and traditions of these colourful people.

  • Day 11 : Departure

Transfer 5-hours to Kilimanjaro Airport for your flight home.
