One-third of India's Golden Triangle, Jaipur is the entry point to Rajasthan for many and entices with its memorable Rajput architecture and pink city walls.
Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan, was not always pink. The original city was, in fact, light grey, edged with white borders. It only acquired its characteristic salmon hue – the traditional color of welcome – ahead of the visit in 1883 of the Prince of Wales. Comprising rectangular blocks divided by broad, tree-lined avenues, the regular grid plan at the heart of the old city was devised in 1728 by Maharaja Jai Singh. Its design was supposed to replicate the form of an auspicious mandala, or sacred Tantric diagram, the aim being to create a framework that would infuse Jaipur’s daily life with ‘the overarching harmony of the Cosmos’. As well as proving an aesthetic triumph, the streamlined layout and its fortifications successfully repelled would-be invaders for decades, ensuring lasting prosperity that has continued into the modern era.
Arrival Jaipur, Jaipur is a city where still never royalty in the splendor of the palaces where lives fighting for the honor of the clan is a necessity, but a way of life, and where the treatment of guests as gods has been a tradition since time immemorial. Jaipur takes its name from its founder Sawai Jai Singh (1693-1743), who had the vision to create a carefully planned city as his capital. All houses in the old town are painted pink, including the famous Hawa Mahal, making the city its alternative name, the Pink City. Day free for independent activities.
Morning excursion to Amber Fort with Elephant ride, Amber Fort, situated just outside the city, is perhaps the best example of Rajasthan forts and offers a great view of the city below. Afternoon city tour of Jaipur, Jaipur offers a variety of tourist attractions for the traveler. The City Palace in the heart of Jaipur is known for its blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture. Not far away is the Central Museum with its large collection of the woodwork, jewelry, costumes, brassware, and pottery. Another monument near the City Palace, Jantar Mantar is the largest of the five observatories built by Sawai Jai Singh. The Hawa Mahal or the Palace of Winds was constructed for the royal ladies, the royal processions without observing seen.
