Departing London pass north through the patchwork fields and honey-coloured villages of the Cotswolds on route to Stratford-upon-Avon where we visit Shakespeare's Stratford and gain views of Anne Hathaway's thatched cottage. Continuing North we head for the grandiose city of York where we walk along the famous Shambles where the medieval buildings lean over the cobbled street below and see the magnificent York Minster, Northern Europe's largest gothic cathedral. Tonight, enjoy a welcome reception with a traditional pub meal, an ideal opportunity to get to know your Travel Director and fellow travellers.
Continuing north we pass through the rugged landscapes of North Yorkshire and the Northumberland National Park before crossing the River Tyne at Newcastle. We'll stop and view part of the preserved Hadrian's Wall which once marked the ancient border between the northern edge of Roman Empire and Scotland beyond. We'll then pass over the modern border in to ‘Bonnie Scotland' where we enjoy a scenic drive through the mellow rolling hills of the Scottish Lowlands before arriving into Edinburgh, Scotland's historic capital city.
This morning, we are joined by a local specialist who'll take us on an included city sightseeing tour to discover the elegance of this ancient city as we pass from the Georgian New Town to see the cobbled streets of the medieval Old Town and the Royal Mile. View the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Arthur's Seat before enjoying an informative and engaging guided visit inside Edinburgh Castle itself. Your choice of sightseeing means you can choose to visit Edinburgh's Camera Obscura instead of the castle if preferred. Later spend free time exploring Edinburgh independently perhaps visiting one or more of the world-class museums and galleries or join your Travel Director on an optional experience to visit the Royal Yacht Britannia.
Returning south we stop at border town Gretna Green, where eloping English couples once married over a blacksmith's anvil. Crossing back into England, we admire some of the most beautiful countryside the country has to offer as we pass the scenic Lake District. These landscapes provided William Wordsworth with the inspiration to write the poem ‘Daffodils' and we visit the lake-land town of Grasmere and see St. Oswald's church where the poet is buried. Later arrive in Liverpool hometown of the 'Fab Four' and home to a wealth of Beatles' history and heritage spots.
From Liverpool we head South in to the Border Marches between England and Wales where we visit the English Tudor market town of Ludlow with its historic castle and timbered buildings. We then see the Malvern Hills as we cross the border into Wales and visit its vibrant capital, Cardiff. Here we enjoy an orientation of the city to see the elegant Cardiff Bay, the Millennium Stadium and the castle before arriving at your hotel. Tonight we enjoy a farewell dinner at a local vineyard with beautiful views of the Welsh countryside.
This morning we cross the Severn Estuary back in to England and make our way to the Georgian city of Bath where we see the elegant Regency architecture and view the medieval Abbey before visiting the stunning Roman Baths, including the ancient Roman temple and Georgian pump room. Continuing through the English countryside we make our way on to the Salisbury Plain to visit Stonehenge, including its new visitor centre and viewing the mystical stone monoliths themselves. By evening we return to London where your memorable holiday ends.
